Why THIS Country Has The Deadliest Skin Cancer

04:38
G’day everyone! For certain, we all know of someone who has suffered from cancer. It’s among the leading causes of death worldwide, with skin cancer being one of the most common at more than 3 million cases reported globally each year. [SCIQ INTRO] Let’s put that in perspective: Here in the states in 2010, 74,000 Americans were diagnosed with cancer of the skin. That same year, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare released a study revealing that we Aussies have the highest rate of melanoma, and one of the highest overall rates of cancer – in the WORLD. At the time, more than 100,000 cases of skin cancer were reported in the country. 74,000 in the giant United States with its huge populations but 100,000 in tiny Australia Fast forward to today: According to the Cancer Council of Australia, 134,000 Australians are gonna be diagnosed with skin cancer by the end of this year, and 150,000 by 2020. That’s more than DOUBLE the rate of the U.S., who in 2017 is expected to have only about 87,000 cases. Numbers for BOTH countries have gone up, but why are we Aussies getting skin cancer at a higher rate than anyone else? Is it because we love the sun, live by the beach, and are always down to play rugby and AFL footy and a game of netty (whispers: netball)? So basically, our addiction to sports why we get cancer? Or is it that we came from English and European stock, and our fair skin is not made for the harsh Australian climate? You know the hole that lets the harmful UV rays in from the sun? ya, that one. And where is that hole located? Right over Antarctica. Cold, right? Well, hot, rather… because that massive gaping hole in the ozone layer creates an increased exposure to the effects of the sun’s UV radiation, and as we know... overexposure to the sun is a contributing factor to skin cancer in particular. The harmful effects of those rays are so strong that even in Australia, 7,246 km or 4,502 miles away, we are affected by the hole in the ozone layer. Now, this doesn’t mean that scientists have discovered in their research that everyone in Australia has now, all of a sudden, developed cancer – or will in the future. However, even decades later these gases, through several chemical reactions, have caused the ozone’s molecules to break down, reducing its capacity to absorb UV rays. It took us a while to catch onto the fact that the products we were using were destroying the ozone. And it took us an equally long time--decades worth of emitting chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere--before we got ourselves together and banned them. But, good news Last year, more than 30 years after scientists first spotted the hole in the atmosphere's protective ozone, measurements taken last year showed that the ozone hole has shrunk by more than 1.5 million square miles--that’s about half of the continental United States. So that means the hole in the ozone layer is healing and thats all happened since the year 2000. So things are getting better. But even though thats good news, I now have some bad news. Melanoma Stage 4

katies brain surgery,29 year old with stage 4 melanoma. started as a mole on her arm in 2006. two years later,in 2008, just two weeks after she has her second baby, there was a lump in her armpit the size of a pingpong ball. She had lymph nodes removed from her armpit, two weeks later had to have the same surgery. Finding out that the previous surgery was done wrong and left cancer lymph nodes in her armpit. One clinic trial later, travailing 300+ miles away from home and her children, it spread to the lungs with two tumors in the right lung. After, having the surgery and the hardest recovery of 3 months, she finally felt she was over the biggest hurdel of all.....but not so, just 4 months later, the cancer spread again. 4 weeks before Christmas, she was sent to the ER with horrible headaches, finding another tumor in her brain. Couple days later she was thrown into another surgery, not knowing if she would wake up being the same person she was before....recovery was easy compared to the others...went home the very next morning with headaches and feeeling great! But again the cancer haunting her, two weeks later had another surgery to remove an ovary. This tumor was 8cm, causing her to look as if she was 4 months pregnant. It was pushing so much on my other organs causing pain and discomfort. Recovery was okay, couldnt sit up by myself, they had cut through her belly button. Made it home in time for Christmas though, was so happy to be with family!! Scans done in January showed over 100 spots (took a trip to Disneyland, doctors orders), the doctors were trying to turn her weeks into months at this point. The time had come where, it was close to saying goodbye. Started new chemo that has shown many tumors shrinking in size. 10+ rounds of chemo and 3 rounds of radiation...she is still alive today and continues to fight everyday of her life!!! NEVER give up hope!!!

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. Every hour of every day one American dies from melanoma - that's approximately 10,000 per year. In 2018, over 178,000 Americans are expected to be diagnosed with melanoma. Of these, approximately, 91,000 will be diagnosed with invasive (Stage I, II, III or IV) melanoma and another 87,000 will be diagnosed with melanoma in situ (Stage 0). Melanoma is not just skin cancer. It can develop anywhere on the body - eyes, scalp, nails, feet, mouth, etc. Melanoma does not discriminate by age, race or gender. Melanoma is the leading cause of cancer death in young women ages 25-30 and the second leading cause of cancer death in women ages 30-35. In ages 15-29, melanoma is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer. The incidence of people under 30 developing melanoma is increasing faster than any other demographic group, soaring by 50% in women since 1980. Approximately 500 American children are diagnosed with melanoma each year. The majority of people diagnosed with melanoma are white men over the age of 50. Today, nearly 1 million people live with melanoma in the U.S. The lifetime risk of getting melanoma is about 1 in 40 for Caucasians, 1 in 200 for Hispanics and 1 in 1,000 for African Americans. 10 Warning Signs Of Skin Cancer Everyone Should Know About

01:52
Melanoma is a cancer that develops in melanocytes, the pigment cells present in the skin. It can be more serious than the other forms of skin cancer because it may spread to other parts of the body (metastasize) and cause serious illness and death. An illness that affects an individual’s skin cells, skin cancer is the byproduct of skin cell damage. This can be a result of ultraviolet radiation (UV) from over-exposure to the sun, the excessive use of tanning salons, and other factors. As such, skin cancer (Melanoma) prompts the growth of genetic defects or mutations that can cause skin cells to rapidly produce, and form malignant tumors. ----------------------------------------------- Find This Video Helpful? CANCER, CANCER : How much do you know about what killed Bob Marley? ACL.

05:21
WHEN Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley died on the 11th of May 1981, it was a very sad day for Jamaica, and indeed, the world. He had fought a long, hard battle against cancer but had finally succumbed to it. This cancer had begun as a malignant melanoma underneath his toenail. Image result for bob marley pictures Bob Marley Many patients that I see know about Bob’s story and are fearful that they might have the same condition. This article will clarify what this type of malignancy is and create more awareness regarding the condition. Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) is a rare type of skin cancer that is not attributed to sun exposure, like most other types of skin cancer. It is most commonly located on the hairless parts of the body, like the palms, nail beds and the soles of the feet, with the vast majority found on the latter. Usually it first appears as a dark brown spot or streak on the skin or nail. It is important to note that most people of colour will have benign dark lines underneath their nails and hyperpigmentation on their palms and soles. This does not mean that they have skin cancer. This type of skin cancer is far more common in people of African and south- east Asian descent. In fact, just over a third of all skin cancers found in people of colour turn out to be ALM.

Skin Cancer Death Rates 70% Higher Among Men

02:11
Latest figures from Cancer Research UK show death rates from malignant melanoma are 3.4 per 100,000 men - 70% higher than the 2.0 figure for women. Incidence rates are similar, with 17.2 men per 100,000 diagnosed compared with 17.3 women. The figures mean that, of the 6,200 men who develop melanoma each year, 1,300 die from the disease, while 900 of the 6,600 women who develop it die. Experts say that since the early 1970s, death rates in men have increased by 185% compared to a rise of only 55% in women. And Professor Julia Newton-Bishop, a Cancer Research UK dermatologist, said key risk factors for melanoma included excessive exposure to UV from sunlight or sunbeds, pale skin colour and a high number of moles, and a family or personal history of the disease. "Research has suggested the difference between the sexes could be in part because men are more likely to be diagnosed when melanoma is at a more advanced stage," she said. "But there also seem to be strong biological reasons behind the differences and we're working on research to better understand why men and women's bodies deal with their melanomas in different ways. "We also know that men and women tend to develop melanoma in different places - more often on the back and chest for men and on the arms and legs for women. If melanoma does develop on your back then it may be more difficult to spot - asking your partner to check your back is a good idea." Sara Hiom, director of early diagnosis at Cancer Research UK, said: "One of the reasons for the difference may be attitudes towards seeing a doctor. We tend to be reluctant to 'waste the doctor's time - men are especially likely to put it off. "If something goes wrong with the car then you sort it out straight away. The same should go for you - if you, or your partner, notice any unusual or persistent changes then see your GP. The key thing is to get to know your skin and what's normal for you so you're more likely to notice something out of the ordinary. "It's also essential to take care not to burn, particularly given the sunny weather we've had this summer. Sunburn is a clear sign that the DNA in your skin cells has been damaged and, over time, this can lead to skin cancer. "When the sun is strong, pop on a t-shirt, spend some time in the shade and use a sunscreen with at least SPF15 and good UVA protection - the higher the star rating, the better. "These habits are particularly important for young men and women, because it's far better to prevent skin cancer in the first place. That means avoiding sunbeds, as well as taking care in the sun. Research has shown that using sunbeds for the first time before 35 can increase your risk of malignant melanoma by nearly 60%."

02:38
Top 10 Countries With The Highest Cancer Rates In The World 2016/2017 Cancer is a disease that will all dread and wish never to have. Some people even prefer Hiv/Aids to cancer because with Hiv/Aids you can live with it for over 30 years but with cancer that isn’t the case. Cancer has spread across the world especially in the West. Cancer is very deadly as it weakens the body’s immune system hence making the infected person susceptible to other diseases. By 2008 there were 12.7 million cancer patients in the world, out of this 6.1 million were women and the rest were men. This clearly shows how cancer is spreading at a fast rate. There are different types of cancers in the world, they are usually named according to the place they infect. Of all the common cancers in the world, lung cancer is the most prevalent. It is followed closely with breast cancer and then followed by prostate cancer. Cancer is very severe, it is predicted that by 2030, the number of cancer patients in the world will be at 21 million. 10. CZECH REPUBLIC: This magnificent country called the Czech Republic is on number ten as per this list. The cancer that is most prevalent in the Czech Republic is the skin cancer commonly called the melanoma. Out of a population of a hundred thousand Czech Republic citizens, 648 are usually women who are infected with the disease and 736 are also mean who are infected with the disease. If you calculate this, you will find the rate at which people die because of skin cancer in Czech Republic is at a rate of 263 deaths per one hundred thousand. Prostate, lung and breast cancer are also very common in the Czech Republic. 9. CANADA: Canada is a first world country and as stated on the introduction, 1st world countries are the countries with the most cancer cases. Canada suffers from high mortality and cancer rates. The major reason for this that there is slow diagnosis of cancer cases and also most of the Canadian is aging. Though the mortality rate is increasing due to cancer, the Canadian government is taking measures to curb this. 8. UNITED STATES The total number of cancer cases and deaths in USA by the end of 2015 was 589,480. This number is quite high due to the imbalanced nature of the American lifestyle, many Americans smoke and also consume large quantities of alcohol. This has caused the USA government to increase the number of medical facilities that can treat cancer patients. 5. NEW ZEALAND The Kiwis are intelligent and educate people but cancer is very common in New Zealand. This has raised many eyebrows in New Zealand. The type of cancer that is most common is breast cancers as around 3000 women are infected with the disease. 4.FRANCE The cause of cancer prognosis in France is due to dietary supplements that are very popular in France. 29% of the French men are suffering from cancer and 2% of the women are also suffering from it. Skin Cancer Nodular Melanoma

01:34
Nodular Melanoma accounts for roughly 10-15% of all melanomas. It is more frequent in males than females, with a ratio of 2:1. They occur most often in the fifth or sixth decade. NMs affect any cutaneous site, but are more often found on the extremities. Lesions appear and evolve over months and tend to extend vertically in the skin. NM is most commonly dark brown, red-brown, or red-black and is dome-shaped, polypoid, or pedunculated. It is occasionally amelanotic or flesh colored and resembles flesh-colored dermal nevi or basal cell carcinoma. These amelanotic melanomas represent 2% of all melanomas. Lesions eventually erode, ulcerate and bleed. NM is the type of melanoma most frequently misdiagnosed because it resembles a blood blister, hemangioma, dermal nevus, or polyp. Firm pressure applied to a hemangioma will in many instances force the blood out of the lesion and eliminate the color. Melanomas are solid and their shape and color density can not be changed with firm finger pressure.

Breaking News - Being married cuts your risk of skin cancer death

06:35
Married couples are less likely to die of skin cancer because they spot warning signs earlier than singles, new research has found.A study of 50,000 American skin cancer patients found that, of those who were married, 45.7 percent had stage 1 tumors, which have a 98 percent survival rate. The chance of catching the disease so early dropped 32 percent for single patients, 38 percent for divorced, and a staggering 70 percent for widowed. The University of Pennsylvania researchers admitted they were stunned by the stark difference in diagnoses. They said the findings should help dermatologists tailor their advice to patients, suggesting screening at an earlier age for single patients and inviting partners into clinic appointments for home-screening training.Rates of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, are expected to rise seven percent by 2035.There were 95,000 new diagnoses of melanoma in 2015, and 15,900 in the UK.Five year survival is reported to be over 98 percent for patients diagnosed with stage I disease - dropping to 62 percent for stage III disease.Earlier prognosis worsens the longer a tumor is left undetected. However, the symptoms can often be hard to spot. The University of Pennsylvania study, published today in the Journal of the American Heart Association, sought to investigate how lifestyle and relationships could affect patients' early detection chances. The results were stark, though logical.'Spouses likely facilitate early detection of melanomas by assisting in identification of pigmented lesions that may have otherwise gone unnoticed,' said corresponding author Dr Cimarron Sharon, a dermatologist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.'They may also provide support and encouragement to see a physician for evaluation.'Thus, married patients are likely to receive a better prognosis because of earlier surgical management.'The study found married patients were also 59, 87 and 69 percent more likely to have an SLNB (sentinel lymph node biopsy) than single, divorced or widowed counterparts respectively. The surgical procedure is also linked to survival as the sentinel lymph node is closest to a tumor and the first place it would spread.Dr Sharon said this could be 'associated with the spouse's role in supporting the patient and engaging in further discussion.'Without a partner patients may also have difficulty facilitating travel to and from hospital and may not have anyone to assist in care afterwards. The study published in JAMA Dermatology said previous research has suggested cancer patients who have partners tend to fare better overall. But this is the largest of its kind into the influence of marriage on the detection of melanoma.Using a US cancer database called SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results) it looked at more than 52,063 men and women aged 52 to 75 who were diagnosed with the disease from 2010 to 2014 and whose marital status was recorded.Dr Sharon said: 'These findings support increased consider AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-5629993/Being-married-cuts-risk-skin-cancer-death.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490
