Is Dark Chocolate Healthy? | HealthiNation

The real gift in a box of (certain kinds of) chocolate is improved health. Give yourself a present and watch this. Related Videos: Lower Cholesterol in Your Diet | HealthiNation http://youtu.be/dqNUU7HvbGw Complex Carbs vs. Simple Carbs | HealthiNation http://youtu.be/fmGNiRYDI1w What has been used for centuries to cure everything from upset stomachs and raging fevers to sagging libidos? The answer is probably not what you think; it is chocolate. Or rather, chocolate's main ingredient called cocoa. Going back in time, the ancient Aztecs ground cocoa seeds with seasonings to make a bitter, spicy drink they thought promoted good health. Long before that, there was evidence that a similar concoction was consumed for its power to nourish and strengthen, and as an aphrodisiac. By the time this creation was brought from the Americas to Europe about 500 years ago, it was a mixture of cocoa, flour and spices. It quickly became a foundation for prescriptions used in hospitals. It is important to note that "chocolate" and "cocoa" are not the same thing. "Cocoa" is the non-fat component of finely ground cocoa beans. It is used in chocolate making, or as powder for cooking and drinks. "Chocolate" refers to the combination of cocoa, butter, sugar and other ingredients that are made into a solid food product. Aside from an energy jolt from the sugar and caffeine, is there an advantage to consuming chocolate? You may be thrilled to know that a number of recent studies say "yes," especially if you eat dark chocolate. Chocolate's essential health benefits probably come from the strong antioxidants in cocoa called flavonoids. Antioxidants can reduce inflammation throughout the body. This is a cornerstone of overall health since inflammation has been linked to a number of chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. A small amount of dark chocolate can also lower blood pressure, and keeping blood pressure levels low is important for cardiovascular health. Flavonoids are the nutritional powerhouse of cocoa, and it is the cocoa that gives chocolate its healthy antioxidants. Another interesting fact is that cocoa also gives chocolate it's brown color. That is why eating dark chocolate is a healthier choice than eating milk chocolate. Of note, white chocolate is made from the fatty part of the bean that contains no cocoa at all. So white chocolate has no brown color, and therefore no antioxidants. Here is what I tell my patients about consuming chocolate; choose dark chocolate with a cocoa content of 70 percent or higher. Limit yourself to no more than 3 ounces (85 grams) of dark chocolate a day, which is the amount shown in studies to be helpful. Because this amount may contain up to 450 calories, you may want to cut calories in other areas or step up your exercise to compensate. If you are looking to increase your intake of flavonoids as part of an overall healthful, balanced diet other good sources include tea, grapes, wine, and various fruits (especially apples and certain berries). Foods that lower cholesterol fast - Eat These 4 Foods Every Day To Lower Your Cholesterol Eat These 4 Foods Every Day To Lower Your Cholesterol What is cholesterol and what is its significance in your life? The fats in your blood have waxy substance in it known as cholesterol. Unfortunately, you can inherit high cholesterol. You can prevent it from getting worse, though, by working out or refraining from smoking. Eating a balanced diet is the best way to keep your cholesterol levels in check. Read on to find out what foods to eat to ensure your cholesterol levels stay within normal range. 1. Whole grains Examples of grain products are any food made from corn, oats, rice, wheat, or another cereal or grain. You can keep your cholesterol levels low by consuming a diet rich in brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa, rye, wild rice, and whole wheat. Whole grains are an excellent source of important vitaminssuch as folate, niacin, thiamin, and vitamin B2. Your blood will no longer be depleted of oxygen as whole grain increases iron levels. It is crucial that your iron levels are high since your body already struggles in transporting oxygen-rich blood because of your narrowed blood vessels. Hence, eating foods rich in viscous fiber like barley and oats can make all the difference. Why? They lower down LDL cholesterol levels (a.k.a. bad cholesterol) and the blood pressure aside from improving insulin response and glucose levels. You can also benefit from the prebiotic effect you can get from grains rich in insoluble fiber such aswheat because it normalizes blood pressure and glucose levels. You should never skip breakfast if you want your cholesterol levels to remain in normal range. Doing so likewise lowers down your caloric requirement for the entire day. Studies support this notion as your cholesterol levels can drop by4.6 points if you consume a lot of whole grains and a further 6.5 point reduction if you eat a lot of oats. The Apple-Cinnamon Granola is a great recipe for starters. Protect your heart and still be able to enjoy a tasty treat. It is better to make your own granola at home rather than purchase commercially sold ones to ensure it is low in sugar and thus healthy for your heart. 2. Apples The doctors were never wrong in promoting daily apple intake as it was also found that it is also helpful in keeping bad cholesterol at bay. It makes for a sweet snack as it contains antioxidants and pectin that reduces inflammation and reduce LDL cholesterol levels. These two conditions predispose you to premature aging and a long list of chronic and debilitating ailments. Aside from antioxidants, apples are also a good source of vitamins A and C that are helpful against deadly free radicals. FYI, free radicals are molecular by-products of digestion. Apple is also a good source of soluble fiber that helps in reducing blood sugar levels along with that of cholesterol.I 3. Garlic Not exactly the most pleasant scent you want to smell, garlic works wonder in fighting oxidation and reducing inflammation.Naturally rich in antioxidants, garlic fights oxidation thereby preventing the cells from getting damaged. It is also effective in stabilizing cholesterol and triglyceride levels, common complaints among the elderly. Mixingabout 20 grams of crushed garlic in lemon juice to prevent hyperlipidemia and maintain normal blood pressure, lipid, and fibrinogen levels in a group of people between the ages of 30-60 as shown in one study. 4. Dark chocolate This is perhaps the most exciting and sweetest solution to reducing high cholesterol levels. Chocolate is made of cocoa. There are certain chemicals in cocoa that protect the cells from pathogens. There was an 11% reduction of the LDL cholesterol levels among patients who participated in a study published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology. This result has been observed 15 days after they started taking 100 grams of dark chocolate daily. Take Everything in Moderation Your diet plays a huge role in maintaining normal cholesterol levels. Eating everything in moderation and preferring a diet high in healthy fruits and veggies and staying well hydrated is sometimes all you need. For better results, eat more whole grains, apple, garlic, and dark chocolate and you’ll soon start seeing positive results in your health. foods that lower cholesterol fast how to lower cholesterol cholesterol cholesterol diet how to reduce cholesterol lower cholesterol low cholesterol diet foods that lower cholesterol high cholesterol cholesterol levels how to lower your cholesterol how to lower cholesterol naturally how to control cholesterol high cholesterol foods high cholesterol diet ldl cholesterol reduce cholesterol how to reduce cholesterol naturally lower cholesterol naturally ways to lower cholesterol low cholesterol recipes how to lower cholesterol fast how to lower ldl how to reduce ldl cholesterol

BLACK COFFEE & CHOLESTEROL Can Black Coffee Affect Your Cholesterol Levels

06:38
BLACK COFFEE & CHOLESTEROL Can Black Coffee Affect Your Cholesterol Levels. Coffee is a popular beverage that is heavily consumed in the United States. With a coffee shop on practically every corner, it is difficult not to join the coffee craze that has swept the nation. There are many varieties of coffees, but they are prepared in two main ways: filtered and unfiltered. Filtered coffees are the most common mode of preparation in the United States and involve brewing the coffee through a filter. Unfiltered coffees, also known as “boiled” coffees, do not employ a filter and include espresso, Turkish coffees, and French press coffees. Coffee contains many ingredients, most notably caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and chemicals called diterpenes. Many studies have examined the health benefits of coffee, paying particularly close attention to caffeine. Some studies have even suggested that drinking coffee may prevent diseases such as type II diabetes mellitus, Parkinson’s disease, certain types of liver cancer, and possibly improve your heart health by lowering your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. To date, coffee consumption has not been directly associated with cardiovascular disease, but some studies reveal that some forms of coffee may adversely affect your lipid profile. Although most studies have noted that filtered coffee has a neutral effect on lipid levels, unfiltered coffee appears to increase LDL, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in some studies. Two diterpenes found in high amounts in unfiltered coffee, cafestol, and kahweol, have been found to actually raise cholesterol levels. These studies examined different types of unfiltered coffee, as well as coffee oil. Most studies have indicated that individuals consuming roughly 60 milligrams of cafestol (equivalent to ten cups of unfiltered, French press coffee or two grams of coffee oil) may raise total cholesterol levels by an average of about 20%. This is largely due to an increase in low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels and triglyceride levels. High density lipoproteins (HDL) do not appear to be affected. It is thought that filtered coffee does not have this effect because the diterpenes are caught in the filter and not included in the coffee consumed. More studies are needed to examine the effect of coffee on lipid levels since the results from some of these studies have been mixed. In the meantime, if you are trying to watch your cholesterol and triglyceride levels, you may want to lower your consumption of unfiltered coffee beverages if you drink large amounts of this beverage frequently. Additionally, you should watch out for some of the things you are adding to your coffee. Heavy cream, sugar, chocolate syrup, and caramel can add calories to your coffee and could raise your cholesterol and triglyceride levels if you consume these items on a regular basis.

1. Dark Chocolate is Very Nutritious If you buy quality dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, then it is actually quite nutritious. It contains a decent amount of soluble fiber and is loaded with minerals. A 100 gram bar of dark chocolate with 70-85% cocoa contains: 11 grams of fiber. 67% of the RDA for Iron. 58% of the RDA for Magnesium. 89% of the RDA for Copper. 98% of the RDA for Manganese. It also has plenty of potassium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium. Of course, 100 grams (3.5 ounces) is a fairly large amount and not something you should be consuming daily. All these nutrients also come with 600 calories and moderate amounts of sugar. For this reason, dark chocolate is best consumed in moderation. The fatty acid profile of cocoa and dark chocolate is excellent. The fats are mostly saturated and monounsaturated, with small amounts of polyunsaturates. It also contains stimulants like caffeine and theobromine, but is unlikely to keep you awake at night as the amount of caffeine is very small compared to coffee. Bottom Line: Quality dark chocolate is rich in Fiber, Iron, Magnesium, Copper, Manganese and a few other minerals. 2.Dark Chocolate is a Powerful Source of Antioxidants Have you ever heard of a measure called ORAC? ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It is a measure of the antioxidant activity of foods. Basically, researchers pit a bunch of free radicals (bad) against a sample of food and see how well the antioxidants in the food can “disarm” them. The biological relevance of this metric is questioned, because it’s done in a test tube and may not have the same effect in the body. However, I think it is worth mentioning that raw, unprocessed cocoa beans are among the highest scoring foods that have been tested. Dark chocolate is loaded with organic compounds that are biologically active and function as antioxidants. These include polyphenols, flavanols, catechins, among others. One study showed that cocoa and dark chocolate contained more antioxidant activity, polyphenols and flavanols than other fruits they tested, which included blueberries and Acai berries. Bottom Line: Cocoa and dark chocolate have a wide variety of powerful antioxidants, way more than most other foods. 3. Dark Chocolate May Improve Blood Flow and Lower Blood Pressure The flavanols in dark chocolate can stimulate the endothelium, the lining of arteries, to produce Nitric Oxide (NO), which is a gas. One of the functions of NO is to send signals to the arteries to relax, which lowers resistance to blood flow and therefore reduces blood pressure. There are many controlled trials showing that cocoa and dark chocolate can improve blood flow and lower blood pressure, but the effects are usually mild. However, there is also one study in people with elevated blood pressure that showed no effect, so take all this with a grain of salt. 4. Dark Chocolate Raises HDL and Protects LDL Against Oxidation Consuming dark chocolate can improve several important risk factors for heart disease. In a controlled trial, cocoa powder was found to significantly decrease oxidized LDL cholesterol in men. It also increased HDL and lowered total LDL in men with elevated cholesterol. Oxidized LDL means that the LDL (“bad” cholesterol) has reacted with free radicals. This makes the LDL particle itself reactive and capable of damaging other tissues… such as the lining of the arteries in your heart. It makes perfect sense that cocoa lowers oxidized LDL. It contains an abundance of powerful antioxidants that do make it into the bloodstream and protect lipoproteins against oxidative damage. Dark chocolate can also reduce insulin resistance, which is another common risk factor for many diseases like heart disease and diabetes. Bottom Line: Dark chocolate improves several important risk factors for disease. It lowers the susceptibility of LDL to oxidative damage while increasing HDL and improving insulin sensitivity. 5. Dark Chocolate May Lower The Risk of Cardiovascular Disease The compounds in dark chocolate appear to be highly protective against the oxidation of LDL. In the long term, this should cause much less cholesterol to lodge Hi welcome to my channel where I upload best Health and fitness videos Please leave a like!, Comment and Subscribe! Upon doing a lipid profile test if you find out that there is an increased or elevated level of LDL also known as the low density lipo protein and increased levels of triglycerides that indicate that there is a high risk of cardiovascular disorders. High intake of trans fats or saturated fats through junk foods and fried foods in combination with unhealthy lifestyle habits such as low exercise, stress and sleeplessness can be huge factors that can cause cardiovascular diseases. Along with these intake of alcohol or smoking can also contribute towards an unhealthy lipid profile. So if one wants to bring the levels down it requires correction of lifestyle by putting together a routine for sleep, exercise and to manage stress along with healthy eating habits. Including healthier fats everyday can bring down the LDL or total cholesterol levels and increase the HDL levels which is also known as the good cholesterol which is what is necessary. Some of the good sources include plant based cold pressed or filtered oils flax seed oil, olive oil, canola oil or even peanut oil, nuts such as almonds, walnuts and pistas. You can also include lot of seeds such as flax seeds, chia seeds, watermelon seeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. Definitely including fish is a good option if you want to have healthy fats. Even pure dark chocolate when consumed 3 to 4 times a week can help you bring down the LDL levels. Apart from these a lot of herbal remedies such a s aloevera juice, lemon water, amla juice etc can be consumed every morning so that we can bring down the cholesterol levels. And typically I don't provide them with just a laundry list of foods to add to their diet. We take a step back and look at all food groups and look to upgrade the entire diet. But to get you started here are four foods that you can crowd into your diet to increase the good cholesterol. The first one are eggs. Believe it or not, the recent research about eggs are that eaten over a 30-day period they will help to increase the good cholesterol in your body. The next one would be dark chocolate, one of my favorites. You want to make sure that you are getting 60% cacao with dark chocolates. The next one would be fish. These have the good omega 3 fats that are going to increase the good cholesterol in your body. And the last one would be garlic. And I'm not encouraging everyone to run around with garlic breath but garlic has the ability to increase good cholesterol well at the same time lowering bad cholesterol. Is Dark Chocolate Good For Diabetes?

03:40
Is Dark Chocolate Good or Bad For Diabetes Download Diabetes Management Book: http://bit.ly/2g0NDAH Hello, I'm Ty Mason from TheDiabetesCouncil.com, researcher, writer and I have type 2 diabetes. Today I'm going to answer the question, is dark chocolate good for diabetes. But before we get into that, make sure you download my free diabetes management book which also includes a diabetes grocery shopping guide (foods to eat and avoid). Before we get going, I want you to remember, we are talking about dark chocolate and not milk chocolate, and there is a huge difference. What if you saw a headline in the newspaper saying that people with diabetes should eat chocolate daily to help reduce their blood glucose levels and insulin dependency? Well, a group of researchers from the University of Hull and the Hull York Medical School have found that dark chocolate has significant health benefits for people with Type 2 diabetes. A 2010 study conducted by Steve Atkin, Professor of Diabetes and Endocrinology, concluded that HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol is improved and overall cholesterol balance is enhanced when patients consume 45g of dark chocolate each day. This is the first study of its kind to report on the effects of giving chocolate to individuals with Type 2 diabetes over a period of 16 weeks. Dark chocolate containing 85% cocoa solids was given to one group with a placebo which contained no cocoa solids but was dyed the same color as the dark chocolate was given to another group. The patients were given instructions to eat no other chocolate, but to otherwise eat their normal diet. According to Atkin, “People with Type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease and since one of the main contributory factors to heart disease is a low level of HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol, the findings that dark chocolate can improve this, means the results of this study are hugely significant.” He continues: “Chocolate with a high cocoa content should be included in the diet of individuals with Type 2 diabetes as part of a sensible, balanced approach to diet and lifestyle. This study demonstrates that it can offer a potential reduction in cardiovascular risk without detrimental risks on weight, insulin resistance or glycemic control.” Who would’ve thought that dark chocolate could be helpful to those of us with diabetes? My research also found a very interesting fact about dark chocolate. It has a very low GI of 23 and a very low GL of 5. So, is dark chocolate good for diabetes? Surprisingly, yes it is! But, if you have never had dark chocolate before, don’t expect it to taste like a Hershey bar. Dark chocolate is a somewhat bitter. Also, this study was conducted with a pretty high quality dark chocolate. 85% cocoa solids is very high and can be expensive. Most commercial dark chocolate, Dove’s for example, is about 71% cocoa solids. The higher the cocoa content, the better. I hope this answered your question is dark chocolate good or bad for diabetes. Don’t forget to get your diabetes management book. Let me know if you have any other diabetes related questions.

01:13
Home remedies for CHOLESTEROL CONTROL. LEARN how to LOWER CHOLESTEROL LEVELS naturally. Many of us are ignorant about how to reduce high cholesterol levels naturally! What Is Cholesterol: Cholesterol is both  good and bad for the body. Within normal levels, it is a great   substance for the body's normal functioning.  If the levels in the blood increase, cholesterol can be dangerous and can cause a heart attack. Every cell of the body has cholesterol. It is produced by the body but can also be obtained from food. It is waxy and fat-like in appearance.  Cholesterol is oil-based. It does not mix with the blood, which is water-based. It is transported through the body by two kinds of lipoproteins which are HDL(high-density lipoprotein) and LDL(low-density lipoprotein). Causes of Cholesterol:  High levels of LDL(low-density lipoprotein) result in an increase of cholesterol in the arteries, whereas HDL(high-density lipoprotein) carries cholesterol to the liver for removal from the body. High cholesterol levels narrow the arteries. This is called atherosclerosis, by which plaques form and cause restriction of blood flow.  An unhealthy diet and lack of exercise are also factors that contribute to bad Cholesterol.  How To Lower Cholesterol : Here are some healthy foods that reduce lower Cholesterol levels in the body.  Consume 2 servings of oats for breakfast daily.  If you are looking for more foods that will lower your cholesterol levels, then opt for Nuts. If you eat 1.5 ounces of walnuts, 6 days a week for a month, cholesterol will come down by 5.4%.  Consumption of tea also helps in lowering cholesterol levels. Dark bitter chocolate is also eaten to combat bad Cholesterol.  The functions of Cholesterol are:  1. It aids in the structure of cell walls. 2. It creates digestive bile acids in the intestine. 3. It allows the production of Vitamin D, by the body. 4. It also helps the body to produce certain hormones.  Symptoms of High Cholesterol Levels: Usually there are no direct symptoms of Cholesterol in most cases. So a blood test is the only way to find out about the cholesterol levels, in order to take precautions.  The actual symptoms would clearly show up in an emergency. For instance, a heart attack or strokes are clear symptoms of bad Cholesterol.   How To Lower Cholesterol Levels: By the end of the day, all of us need to get our priorities right. The Real Skinny about Dark Chocolate

02:11
http://www.actorsreporter.com One thing some of Christine Avanti's successful clients do is have one small piece of dark chocolate (no more than 1 ounce) after a healthy PC combo meal. If you're going to choose a sweet treat, this is your best choice, as recent studies have shown that dark chocolate is actually good for your health. Dark chocolate contains flavonoids, antioxidants that help fight damage caused by free radicals. It also has heart health benefits, including helping to reduce high blood pressure and lower cholesterol. Look for dark chocolate (not milk of white chocolate) that has at lease 70 percent or higher cocoa content. Whatever your sweet preference may be, feel free to have the occasional treat rather than be bound to the "diet/deprivation" mind-set. Just use your good judgment and keep eating PC combos.

Best Anti-Ageing Foods For You

08:13
Hello! my Tribe As we get older, the body's machinery begins to function a little less smoothly and we become vulnerable to age-related diseases. However, there are certain foods that can help prevent or slow down the negative effects aging has on the body. They won't stop you from getting older, but they can improve your overall health and vitality, and protect you against diseases and illnesses, helping your body stay younger at any age. So today I'm going to talk about some anti- ageing foods that are especially good at preventing or reducing the effects of age-related diseases and other health problems and can slow down the ageing process. Blueberries These sweet treats are tiny powerhouses of nutrients. In fact blueberries get their pigment from a property called anthocyanin that helps boost skin’s elasticity and support healthy connective tissue. The deep blue colour of blueberries have some awesome free radical-fighting abilities which has been linked to fight off degenerative diseases and help slow down age related problems such as loss of coordination and mental function. A 2012 study suggested that, not only are blueberries one of the best forms of antioxidant intake, but they have a higher content compared to other berries. These potent superfoods are considered the best antioxidant fruit available out there! Pomegranate Pomegranate, eaten in any form is a miracle fruit. From assisting with weight loss, to reducing the risk of cardiac disease, to preventing cancer, you name it and pomegranate heals it all. Pomegranate offers us the chance to slow down the aging process, almost naturally! Two potent nutrients, namely punicalagin and ellagic acid found in the juice of pomegranate protect skin from premature aging by eliminating oxygen stealing free radicals which in turn prevents wrinkles and age spots on the skin. Kale and spinach Kale is a huge source of beta carotene, vitamin C and anti inflammatory substances called flavonols. One such flavonol known as quercetin, protects the body from stress which in turn reverses the ageing process. Kale also contains sulphur based glucosinolates that enable the detoxification pathways in the liver to function smoothly. Spinach is a rich source of vitamin C and contains antioxidants which are essential for the production of sebum—the natural oil produced by the skin's oil glands. Sebum is necessary for moisturizing skin and prevents dry and withered skin. It is also a conditioning source for hair and helps in casting an overall youthful body glow. Dark chocolate Everybody has a sweet tooth, and chocolate an all time satisfier. Dark high-quality chocolate in particular has several health benefits that make it a bit more justifiable to snack on! In fact, it ranks as one of the top anti-aging foods. Eating about an ounce of dark chocolate every day proves to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and increase HDL (good cholesterol). As we know, too much bad cholesterol is not good for us. Dark chocolate contains nutrients that are known to help lower blood sugar and increase blood flow. It also contains lots of flavanols, which protect the skin against sun damage and also contains a vast amount of antioxidants, which are great for promoting heart health, decreasing the risk of infection, and fighting free radicals in the body. Nuts Eating nuts as part of a balanced diet can add years to your life by helping prevent chronic disease, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. Nuts are rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and fibers that reduce inflammation and its effects on the body and reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Since all vascular factors are related with cognition, nuts have the potential to slow cognitive decline in older adults. So it's time to snack on some chestnuts, walnuts, almonds and more! Figs Figs are rich in flavonoids and polyphenols, which have strong antioxidant properties that help prevent various oxidative stress-related medical conditions, such as hepatic and neurodegenerative issues. I added them in my diet, one at a time, slowly but I have them constantly. And I see the results, well I am 44 and I know you believe me when i say that I feel way younger and energetic. I love sharing all that I have learned over years, these are all tried an tested methods, so try adding these foods and write back to me, always waiting for your comments and feedback. Chocolate: Benefits vs. Dangers | Is Theobromine Safe? - Thomas DeLauer

06:37
Chocolate: Benefits vs. Dangers | Is Theobromine Safe? - Thomas DeLauer: Learn the OTHER benefit of Chocolate! I'll teach you more about the foods that work for you at http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Click to learn more. Theobromine and Fat Loss: Theobromine is the major alkaloid in cocoa, giving cocoa its bitter taste. Theobromine is the substance responsible for chocolate being toxic to dogs and some other mammals. Humans process theobromine differently, leading the many health benefits rather than toxicity. Cocoa consumption began in the Americas and spread to Europe in the 16th century. It was traditionally used both as food and medicine. Theobromine concentrations are higher in dark chocolate than milk chocolate or white chocolate. Cocoa nibs and cocoa powder have the highest concentrations. It is a substance known as a methylxanthine derivative. Caffeine is also a methylxanthine → caffeine and theobromine are similar in molecular structure. Our affinity for chocolate has to do with the combination of caffeine and theobromine. -A study had participants consume a drink with a capsule of either placebo or a caffeine/theobromine combination similar to that of chocolate. Those that consumed the drink with the caffeine and theobromine reported liking the beverage more. Just like caffeine, theobromine is a stimulant. This is due to their effect on adenosine receptors. These compounds act as adenosine antagonists, taking the place of adenosine on receptors in the brain. Theobromine is about 1/10th as effective as caffeine in the body, so it takes much more theobromine to feel its effects than caffeine. The half-life, the amount of time that it takes for your body to process ½ of a substance, of theobromine is about 6 to 10 hours, longer than that of caffeine. This means that theobromine stays around in the body for a long period of time after consumption. Theobromine is an anti-inflammatory and reduces oxidative stress in the body. It has been found to help with asthma symptoms. Theobromine has been found to increase HDL cholesterol and decrease LDL cholesterol. Theobromine has been found to affect DNA and RNA structure. The full impacts of this are not yet known, but it is hypothesized that this can inhibit or induce gene expression. -Caffeine has been found to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. -Thus theobromine may be effective to treat some diseases and could be used in future drugs Theobromine and Weight Loss: Theobromine may help to speed up weight loss, but not as noticeably as caffeine. As a mild stimulant this can give you the energy to go for a run or hit the gym. As a diuretic, this can help you to empty the contents of your stomach. Also may act to suppress appetite, reducing our likelihood to consume unhealthy foods at moments of temptation. The quantity of theobromine found in chocolate and other foods, such as coffee, are unlikely to be high enough for you to notice any weight loss impact through the above means, especially when compared to caffeine in coffee. However, there are so many other health benefits, and the more all-around healthy you are the more able you are to live an active lifestyle. One of these has to do with insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is the most likely way that theobromine may aid in weight loss. A 2005 study had volunteers consume dark chocolate for 15 days, and then white chocolate. Insulin sensitivity was increased during the dark chocolate period. Improved insulin sensitivity is crucial in weight loss. Can You Have too Much? Studies have found that the positive mood effects of theobromine turn negative when too much is consumed. Dark chocolate has roughly 200 to 300 mg of theobromine per 40 grams, so a typical 50 gram dark chocolate bar can be assumed to be at about 250 to 375 mg of theobromine. One study found 700 mg of theobromine lowered blood pressure, increased how interesting a task seemed and decreased calmness. Another study found that higher levels of theobromine, from 500 mg to 1000 mg, experienced more “dislike” feelings. So, eating one dark chocolate bar will likely lead to positive mood effects, but eating two or more could lead to negative effects. References: 1. As mentioned previously, this mixture is truly an antioxidant powerhouse. Both ingredients are well known for their high levels of antioxidant compounds that can improve our overall health, prevent certain disease and boost our immunity. Raw honey is a rich source of many different high quality antioxidant compounds. These include compounds such as organic acids, flavonoids and phenols. As well, studies have shown that when we consume raw honey, this can increase the total antioxidant value found in our body. One of dark chocolate’s most impressive health promoting abilities is its high antioxidant content. It contains many different phytochemicals and antioxidant plant compounds. It is loaded with powerful antioxidants such as polyphenols and flavonoids, which can help reduce the risk of certain diseases. 2. Consuming raw honey and dark chocolate can also have tremendous health benefits for our heart and improve overall cardiovascular health. Honey, especially raw honey varieties, can improve the health of our heart many different ways. The antioxidants found in it have been linked to improving blood pressure levels. Honey can also help to reduce both total and “bad” LDL cholesterol levels, while also significantly raising “good” HDL cholesterol. Raw honey can also help to lower triglyceride levels in the body and reduce the risk of heart disease. Dark chocolate is also very heart healthy. It can help to lower blood pressure levels and improve circulation and blood flow to the heart. This is largely attributed to the excellent source of flavanols dark chocolate contains. As well, the high amounts of antioxidants found in dark chocolate can reduce inflammation, a risk factor for heart disease, and improve cardiovascular health. 3. This mixture may also help to reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer due to the unique and potent compounds found within both ingredients. Raw honey is truly and antioxidant powerhouse that helps to block and eliminate free radicals in the body that can cause damage and lead to disease. These antioxidants can also help to boost our immune system and its functioning. As well, raw honey is a rich source of polyphenols. These powerful antioxidants may be able to help reduce the risk of not only developing diseases such as heart disease, but also some forms of cancer. Raw honey can also be helpful in this regard due to its disease fighting antioxidant flavonoid compounds such as pinostrobin and pinocembrin. Dark chocolate may also have potential when it comes to preventing certain types of cancer. This is largely attributed to its rich supply of flavonoids, which may have cancer protective properties. Always discuss with your medical practitioner other prevention and treatment methods in this regard. 4. Consuming raw honey and dark chocolate can also have benefits as a diabetes aid. How to Lower Cholesterol Naturally - Foods That Lower Cholesterol Naturally

02:40
How to Lower Cholesterol Naturally - Foods That Lower Cholesterol Naturally If you're already eating plenty of the following foods that lower cholesterol naturally, keep up the good work! But if your idea of eating well is to opt for the "buttered popcorn" instead of the "extra buttered popcorn," consider adding these healthy choices to your diet. Oats If you're looking to lower your cholesterol, the key may be simply changing your morning meal. Switching up your breakfast to contain two servings of oats can lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol by 5.3% in only 6 weeks. The key to this cholesterol buster is beta-glucan, a substance in oats that absorbs LDL, which your body then excretes. Banish bland oats with this dessert-worthy ginergersnap oatmeal recipe. Red wine Scientists are giving us yet another reason to drink to our health. It turns out that high-fiber Tempranillo red grapes, used to make red wine like Rioja, may actually significantly lower cholesterol levels. A study conducted by the department of metabolism and nutrition at Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain found that when individuals consumed the same grape supplement found in red wine, their LDL levels decreased by 9%. In addition, those who had high cholesterol going into the study saw a 12% drop in LDL. So go ahead and drink a glass for that cholesterol-lowering benefit. Salmon & fatty fish Omega-3 fats are one of the natural health wonders of the world and have been shown to ward off heart disease, dementia, and many other diseases. Now these fatty acids can add yet another health benefit to their repertoire: lowering cholesterol. According to research from Loma Linda University, replacing saturated fats with omega-3s like those found in salmon, sardines, and herring can raise good cholesterol as much as 4%. (Here's everything you need to know about buying the healthiest fish possible.) Nuts If you're looking for a snack food that lowers cholesterol levels, research shows that you should get cracking! In a study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people who noshed on 1.5 oz of whole walnuts 6 days a week for 1 month lowered their total cholesterol by 5.4% and LDL cholesterol by 9.3%. Almonds and cashews are other good options. However, while nuts are heart healthy, they're also high in calories, so practice portion control—1.5 oz is about a shot glass and a half. Use a shot glass to measure out your portion so you can see exactly how it looks. (Here's what happens if you eat too many nuts.) Tea While tea has become well known for its cancer-fighting antioxidants, it is also a great defense against high LDL cholesterol levels. According to research conducted with the USDA, black tea has been shown to reduce blood lipids by up to 10% in only 3 weeks. These findings were concluded in a larger study of how tea may also help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. (Here's how to make the perfect cup of tea every time.) Beans Beans, beans—they really are good for your heart. Researchers at Arizona State University Polytechnic found that adding ½ cup of beans to soup lowers total cholesterol, including LDL, by up to 8%. The key to this heart-healthy food is its abundance of fiber, which has been shown to slow the rate and amount of absorption of cholesterol in certain foods. Try black, kidney, or pinto beans; each supplies about one-third of your daily fiber needs. Chocolate Yes! This powerful antioxidant helps build HDL ("good") cholesterol levels. In a 2007 study published in AJCN, participants who were given cocoa powder had a 24% increase in HDL levels over 12 weeks, compared with a 5% increase in the control group. Remember to choose the dark or bittersweet kind. Compared to milk chocolate, it has more than 3 times as many antioxidants, which prevent blood platelets from sticking together and may even keep arteries unclogged. Margarine Switching to a margarine with plant sterols, such as Promise activ or Benecol, could help lower cholesterol. Plant sterols are compounds that reduce cholesterol absorption; a study published in AJCN found that women who had a higher plant sterol–based diet were able to lower total cholesterol by 3.5%. Garlic Aside from adding zing to almost any dish, garlic makes the list of foods that lower cholesterol; it's also been found to prevent blood clots, reduce blood pressure, and protect against infections. Now research finds that it helps stop artery-clogging plaque at its earliest stage by keeping cholesterol particles from sticking to artery walls. Try for 2 to 4 fresh cloves a day. Olive oil Good news: This common cooking ingredient can help your health. Olive oil is full of heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), which lower LDL cholesterol—and have the welcome side effect of trimming belly fat. Use it to make your own salad dressings, marinate chicken and fish, or roast vegetables.

10 Foods to Avoid with High Cholesterol

02:04
1. Liver The amount of fats in your bloodstream remain higher than usual several hours after eating liver. Since your liver is the organ responsible for the production of cholesterol, consuming animal liver will boost your cholesterol levels. Liver is a great source of iron, but skip organ meats and choose lean cuts of meat instead. 2. Full-Fat Dairy Dairy products are known to be high in calcium, vitamin D and potassium. Your bones depend on these nutrients to remain strong and healthy. However, consuming whole-fat dairy products are high in cholesterol and saturated fat which can become a health hazard if you have high cholesterol levels. Replacing with low-fat or non-fat versions allows you to incorporate dairy products into your diet in a healthy way. 3. Fried Chicken Eating foods high in saturated fats is one of the main causes of high cholesterol circulating in your blood. Greasy, deep-fried chicken is one of the worst offenders if you are on a cholesterol-lowering diet. Deep frying - or pan frying- soaks up fat, adding extra calories which can aggravate your existing health condition. For a healthier option, prepare skinless chicken breast by grilling or baking to minimize the fat content. 4. French Fries White potatoes are rich in potassium and magnesium, two crucial minerals that contribute to multiple health benefits. French fries however, are usually fried in partially hydrogenated vegetable oil which contributes to trans-fats. These unhealthy fats build up cholesterol in the arteries, causing damage to the body cells and your heart. Prepare your potatoes by boiling or baking, a healthier option for your body. 5. Ice Cream Some of the best-tasting desserts are actually some of the worst when it comes to raising your cholesterol levels. Ice cream is made by a mixture containing high-fat milk or cream, glucose-based sweeteners, and flavorings such as chocolate or vanilla. This is definitely not a good food option to eat regularly if you're concerned about your cholesterol. An average serving of vanilla ice cream contains almost 5 grams of saturated fat, which makes up for a quarter of the maximum recommended daily intake. 6. Processed Meat Food products such as bacon, sausages, hot dogs and cold cuts are generally classified as unhealthy. Daily consumption of processed meat raises LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in the blood, increasing the risk of coronary heart disease. There is also growing evidence that links processed meats to diabetes and several types of cancer, particularly colon cancer. 7. Microwave Popcorn Popcorn is low in calories and high in fiber, preparing it the right way is in fact a healthy snack. However, microwave popcorn is loaded with salt, oil and butter that have the ability to increase cholesterol levels. When the bags of microwave popcorn are heated, they release particles that may be associated with health risks. Select air-popped variety, or pop the kernels yourself on the stove with olive oil. 8. Doughnuts Doughnuts taste so good, finding a way to resist them is no easy task. But, if you're serious about lowering your cholesterol level, bid farewell to doughnuts. These doughy treats usually come one way, and that way is deep-fried. Fried foods often contain lots of unsaturated and trans fats that lower your HDL (good) cholesterol and raise your LDL (bad) cholesterol. Add to that lots of sugar and other unhealthy ingredients, this treat can cause harm to your health. 9. Red Meat (Beef, Porc, Lamb) Red meat is an excellent source of complete protein which is the building blocks of every cell in the body. Choose lean cuts of red meat that does not contain high levels of fat or saturated fat. Trim off any visible fat to further reduce the levels of saturated fat content. Limit your serving size and include more veggies and high-fiber foods on your dinner plate. Fiber acts like a sponge and soaks up cholesterol, helping to remove the excess cholesterol that's floating in your bloodstream. 10. Pastries Pastries are high-calorie, low nutrient foods that will pile extra pounds around your waistline, while having damaging effects on your skin and heart. For a healthy snack choose dark chocolate (70% or more cocoa), its rich amount of cocoa attributes to a number of health benefits. Eating dark chocolate, in moderation, has been found to significantly decrease LDL (bad) cholesterol due to its abundance of powerful antioxidant flavonoids. Unlike pastries, cocoa has shown to prevent cholesterol from lodging in the arteries.
