High Blood Pressure Symptoms: Emergency Symptoms, Treatments, and More High blood pressure High blood pressure is often associated with few or no symptoms. Many people have it for years without knowing it. However, just because high blood pressure is often symptomless doesn’t mean it’s harmless. In fact, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or hypertension, causes damage to your arteries, especially those in the kidneys and eyes. High blood pressure is also a risk factor for stroke, heart attack, and other cardiovascular problems. High blood pressure is generally a chronic condition. There are two major categories of high blood pressure: secondary hypertension and primary hypertension. Most people have primary hypertension, otherwise known as essential hypertension. Secondary hypertension is high blood pressure that is the direct result of a separate health condition. Primary hypertension is high blood pressure that doesn’t result from a specific cause. Instead, it develops gradually over time. Many such cases are attributed to hereditary factors. Typically, the only way to know you have hypertension is to get your blood pressure tested. Rare symptoms and emergency symptoms Rarely, people with chronic high blood pressure might have symptoms such as: dull headaches dizzy spells nosebleeds When symptoms do occur, it’s usually only when blood pressure spikes suddenly and extremely enough to be considered a medical emergency. This is called a hypertensive crisis. Hypertensive crisis is defined as a blood pressure reading of 180 milligrams of mercury (mm Hg) or above for the systolic pressure (first number) or 120 or above for the diastolic pressure (second number). It’s often caused by skipping medications or secondary high blood pressure. If you’re checking your own blood pressure and get a reading that high, wait a few minutes and then check again to make sure the first reading was accurate. Other symptoms of a hypertensive crisis may include: severe headache or migraine severe anxiety chest pain vision changes shortness of breath nosebleed After waiting a few minutes, if your second blood pressure reading is still 180 or above, don’t wait to see whether your blood pressure comes down on its own. Call 911 or your local emergency services immediately. Emergency hypertensive crisis can result in severe complications, including: fluid in the lungs brain swelling or bleeding a tear in the aorta, the body’s main artery stroke seizures in pregnant women with eclampsia High blood pressure during pregnancy In some cases, high blood pressure can occur during pregnancy. There are several types of high blood pressure disorders in pregnancy. Causes may be due to a number of factors, including: obesity chronic high blood pressure diabetes kidney disease lupus in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other pregnancy-related assistance being a teen or being over 40 years of age carrying more than one child (e.g., twins) first-time pregnancy If high blood pressure occurs during pregnancy after 20 weeks, a condition known as preeclampsia may develop. Severe preeclampsia can cause damage to the organs and brain, which can bring on life-threatening seizures known as eclampsia. Signs and symptoms of preeclampsia include protein in urine samples, intense headaches, and vision changes. Other symptoms are abdominal pain and excessive swelling of the hands and feet. High blood pressure during pregnancy can cause a premature birth or early detachment of the placenta. It may also require a cesarean delivery. In most cases, the blood pressure will return to normal after giving birth. Complications and risks of high blood pressure Over time, untreated high blood pressure can cause heart disease and related complications such as heart attack, stroke, and heart failure. Other potential problems are: vision loss kidney damage erectile dysfunction (ED) fluid buildup in the lungs memory loss Treatment for high blood pressure There are a number of treatments for high blood pressure, ranging from lifestyle changes to weight loss to medication. Doctors will determine the plan based on your level of high blood pressure and its cause. Dietary changes Healthy eating is an effective way to help lower high blood pressure, especially if it’s only mildly elevated. It’s often recommended to eat foods low in sodium and salt, and high in potassium. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is one example of a food plan prescribed by doctors to keep blood pressure in order. The focus is on low-sodium and low-cholesterol foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

And having hypertension is one of the leading causes of a heart attack or stroke.(1) Now, there are lots of ways to naturally lower your blood pressure and under this video, in the description area, I’ve listed some of my favorites. However, don’t go there yet because most people, including doctors, mistakenly consume less salt to lower blood pressure. However, low-salt diets typically don’t make much of a difference. What does make a big difference is lowering sugar in your diet and more specifically, “high fructose corn syrup” In a recent study in the journal Open Heart (2), the authors write: “Evidence from epidemiological studies and experimental trials in animals and humans suggests that added sugars, particularly fructose, may increase blood pressure and blood pressure variability, increase heart rate and myocardial oxygen demand, and contribute to inflammation, insulin resistance and broader metabolic dysfunction. Thus, while there is no argument that recommendations to reduce consumption of processed foods are highly appropriate and advisable, the arguments in this review are that the benefits of such recommendations have less to do with sodium—minimally related to blood pressure and perhaps even inversely related to cardiovascular risk—and more to do with highly-refined carbohydrates and sugars." The Problem Started In The 1970s Food and beverage manufacturers began switching their sweeteners from sucrose (table sugar) to corn syrup in the 1970s when they discovered that High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) was far cheaper to use in their products. In fact, HFCS is the #1 source of calories in America!!!( 3) It’s found in almost everything you can think of. More specifically, in sodas and fruit juices. But also in many pre-packaged foods. This also includes “healthy sugars” sweetened with agave. My Proven “Prescription” and Recommendation For You You must do your best to limit and eliminate all HFCS and to do this, make sure you read labels. Again, the LESS pre-packaged the food, the better. Limit your TOTAL fructose to 25 grams or less, that’s about 100 calories daily. This includes the natural fructose found in fruits. If you are already suffering from high blood pressure or signs of insulin resistance like diabetes, overweight and high cholesterol, you should be particularly careful to limit your fructose, including that from whole fruits, to 15 grams per day or less. That’s about 60 calories daily. So there you have it. Focus more on limiting your sugars, this includes fruit sugar, fructose … and especially “high fructose corn syrup” which is found in most pre-packaged foods, especially sodas and fruit juices. You will get almost immediate but temporary relief. I was so luck I knew about this solution when I had my own emergency, the day my BP shot way too high. You don't need to add add anything to the water. Just plain hot tap water will do. Nothing fancy. It's the heating of the feet that does it. Why does it work? I don't know. It's a curious physiological reaction you can use to your own advantage. I made this video because if ever you need to know how to lower your blood pressure quickly, this is one natural, quick and easy solution. My BP was dropped from about 170/100 down to 140/80, rising a bit thereafter, but not as high as it was before the feet soaking treatment. What a RELIEF!!! AGE Most people don’t realize that AGE is one of the BIGGEST factors for high blood pressure. I discuss this in my very important article, but what’s important to note is that after the age of 40, 33% of the population has high blood pressure and after the age of 60, over 71% of the population has hypertension! So, if you’re over the age of 40 and have high blood pressure, it may not be your fault. But it IS your responsibility to fix it right away and here is how I lowered my dad’s blood pressure naturally, in just 30 days. 2. GENETICS & FAMILY HISTORY Well, not much can be done here. This is in fact my own problem because I have a family history (on my dad’s side) of hypertension, heart attacks and especially strokes. You can read more about it, include my personal favorite solution that my dad, my family and I use to promote healthy blood pressure levels, naturally! 3. SMOKING Come on people, smoking has NO health benefits. STOP smoking! 4. ALCOHOL A little bit of alcohol is okay, especially if it’s organic red wine. But drinking every night will cause damage to your heart, arteries and liver. Alcohol is a toxic and it’s acidic, both being bad for your body. 5. BEING OVERWEIGHT Similar to smoking, being overweight has no health benefits. And the older you get, the harder it is to lose that unwanted fat. 6. SODIUM Salt has its benefits actually. Regular table salt or salt found in processed foods and packages is BAD for you. However, “natural” salts such as Himalayan rock or Celtic sea salt is GOOD for you and can actually help LOWER blood pressure. I’ll discuss this in a future article. 7. STRESS Well know stress is bad. However, you can’t get rid of it. What’s important is the MEANING you give to stressful situations. If you freak out, get negative and focus on the problem the entire time … you put your body under extra stress. The secret is to focus on the SOLUTION and to know that “this too shall pass” and worrying about the problem isn’t going to help anything… Especially our blood pressure or heart. 8. LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY We sit too much these days. Just get outside and walk daily, even if it’s just for 15-20 minutes. It’ll do wonders for your physical AND mental health! 9. MEDICAL CONDITIONS This goes back to “genetics”. And if you know you have a genetic “problem”, which is making things worse, then you MUST make changes to your life-style because your body is more sensitive than the average person. This is a similar problem with my dad and why he had a stroke. 10. MEDICATION Ironically, many “heart” medications actually cause more heart PROBLEMS in the long run. They can increase your cholesterol, blood sugar or blood pressure levels. They can decrease blood flow and circulation. And today I’m going reveal 3 simple pressure points on your body, that will instantly lower your blood pressure. Something important that I want to bring to your attention about today’s topic is that these solutions are for instant results, NOT long-term solutions … which I’ll get to at the end of today’s video. So if you’re feeling stressed or your blood pressure is rising, you can almost instantly and quickly use today’s 3 pressure points to lower your blood pressure and help avoid anything bad from happening. If nothing else, you’ll get instant relief and relaxation. Acupressure Point LI4 LI 4, which stands for “Large Intestine 4”, is an extremely useful acupressure point that is extensively used to treat chronic pain, acute stress and various types of diseases along with treatment for high blood pressure. This point is situated in the webbing between the forefinger and the thumb… right in the middle as you see here. It calms and balances blood flow throughout the body and clears stagnation. As an added benefit, it also boosts your immunity. The most effective way to apply pressure to LI 4 is to slide your thumb along the webbing until you reach the junction of the thumb and index finger bones. How to apply acupressure? Begin by moving your thumb in a small circular rubbing motion over LI 4 for a few seconds. Then you can apply gentle to moderate thumb pressure depending on how sensitive the area feels. If there is any pain, it should be a “good hurt,” not severe or uncomfortable. You can hold the point as long as you are comfortable, up to several minutes. I typically suggest about 20-30 seconds, then take a few second break and then repeat as often as you’d like. PC 6 PC 6 or Pericardium 6 is yet another important acupressure point for treating high blood pressure. It soothes and helps the heart and circulatory system in their proper functioning. This point is also known as the Inner Gate, and it is located on the inner forearm, approximately three finger-widths away from the wrist crease as you see here. This point can be stimulated by applying firm pressure to the point using your index finger or thumb. Again, apply pressure for about 20-30 seconds, then take a break and repeat as needed. G20 The G20 is below the base of your skull, in the hollows on both sides of the neck, between the two vertical neck muscles. Putting pressure here lowers your blood pressure, reduces headaches and stress by relaxing your nervous system. Use your thumbs, fingers, or knuckles to gradually apply pressure into the hollows of your skull. Close your eyes as you tilt your head back slowly. Take long, slow deep breaths as you hold for two to three minutes. Direct the pressure slowly and firmly into the center of your head. Other Acupressure Points Now, there are lots of other acupressure points -- on your feet, arms, legs, and so forth. I picked these 3 areas for lowering your blood pressure because you can do them any where, any place -- they’re easy to access. It’s just your hand, forearm/wrist and the back of your head. In fact, nearly one third of individuals in the United States either have, or are at risk of developing hypertension. Eating a healthy diet full of vegetables, lean proteins, fruit and whole grains along with exercising can help to lower hypertension. In this video, we will discuss foods you will want to avoid if you have hypertension or want to reduce the risk of developing the ailment. Always discuss with your medical practitioner other treatment and prevention methods in this regard. Now, lets discuss some foods to avoids for hypertension. 1. First, perhaps the most important food to avoid for high blood pressure is salt. High sodium intake can hurt the overall health of our cardiovascular system and increase the risk of developing hypertension and cardiovascular disease. It is often recommended that those individuals at risk of developing hypertension or who already live with it should limit their sodium intake to no more than 1500 milligrams per day. 2. Another food you will want to avoid for hypertension is processed deli and lunch meats. Though they can be convenient at times, these foods are loaded with sodium, which again should be avoided for those individuals at risk for hypertension. These meets are loaded with sodium since they are seasoned and preserved with salt. Just a 2 ounce serving of lunch meats can contain more than 500 milligrams of sodium. 3. Sugar and its effects on our overall health have been discussed in the news quite often as of late. Not only can eating too much sugar cause weight gain and many other health problems, but it has also been linked with hypertension. Those individuals who are overweight are at a higher risk of developing the disease. It is also important to keep in mind that sugar has little to no nutritional value as well. It is often recommended that women eat no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar and men no more than 9 teaspoons per day. 4. Drinking alcohol in excess should also be avoided for hypertension. Consuming too much alcohol has now been associated with high blood pressure. In fact, studies have shown that drinking too much alcohol at a time can cause a temporary spike in blood pressure. As well, drinking alcohol in excess for a period of time can cause long-term increase in blood pressure. Not only that, but since alcohol is metabolized by the liver, it can lead to weigh gain, which again can increase the risk of hypertension. 5. Lastly, canned soup should be avoided for hypertension. Reduce sodium in your diet Foods high in sodium include table-salt, sauces, salad-dressings, bacon, pickles, snacks, fast-foods, canned-foods, etc. Even a small reduction in the sodium in your diet can reduce blood pressure by 2 to 8 millimeter of mercury. The effect of sodium intake on blood pressure varies among groups of people. In general, limit sodium to less than 2,300 milligrams a day or less. 2. Reduce your stress Chronic stress is an important contributor to high blood pressure. Occasional stress also can contribute to high blood pressure if you react to stress by eating unhealthy food, drinking alcohol or smoking. Take some time to think about what causes you to feel stressed, such as work, family, finances or illness. Once you know what's causing your stress, consider how you can eliminate or reduce stress. If you can't eliminate all of your stressors, you can at least cope with them in a healthier way. 3. Exercise regularly Regular physical activity at least 30 minutes most days of the week can lower your blood pressure by 4 to 9 millimeters of mercury. If you already have hypertension, regular physical activity can bring your blood pressure down to safer levels. 4.Eat a healthy diet Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood pressure by up to 14 millimeters of mercury. This eating plan is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. 5. Supplement your diet with nuts, seeds, and legumes. They are relatively high in fat, but they also have magnesium, potassium, fiber, and protein.
