Passive Solar House Design Utilization in Bush House Located in Margaret River, Australia

Passive Solar House Design Utilization in Bush House Located in Margaret River, Australia - This house is known as Bush House. It was Designed by Archterra Architects Located in an existing clearing within a section of remnant Marri/Jarrah bushland, this owner-built bush pavilion designed by Archterra Architects seeks to distil into built form, the feelings of camping under a simple sheltering tarpaulin... Diagrammatically, the houses' simple rectangular plan is separated east-west into sleeping and living zones and delineated by a change in floor level and a thick rammed earth wall that continues through the house into the outdoors. The rammed earth wall also defines the entry approach from the detached vehicle parking area. Couple Builds Energy Efficient Passive Solar Home - Green Building

09:36
In this video we meet Casey & Natasha, a conscious couple who built a passive solar home near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. In addition to orienting their house to face south, they installed overhangs that block the sun to keep it cool during summer months and allow the sun to enter and heat the house during winter months. They also installed a 10 kW solar system that sells clean electricity back to the grid through Ontario's MicroFIT Program and the revenue helps cover their own utility bills. The house was built to Passive House standards and is currently pending certification. You can learn more about Passive House here: http://www.passivehouse.ca/fundamentals/ The exterior walls of this house are 20" thick and are insulated using Roxul insulation which is made locally, better for the environment, can get wet, and has less flame retardants than traditional fiberglass insulation, which means cleaner air quality in the home. To maximize the energy efficiency of their home, they installed triple glazed windows, a drain water heat recovery system, an air source heat pump water heater, and a bioethanol fireplace. They also chose sustainable alternatives like concrete countertops instead of granite, and reclaimed pine flooring instead of using new wood. Last but not least, they designed their house to be completely fossil fuel-free which means that they don't use any fossil fuels to power or heat their home. Casey & Natasha are building a conscious group of companies to align their work life with their personal values. Their companies include The Conscious Builder, the Conscious Living podcast and the Conscious Store (coming soon!). http://cgreyconstruction.com http://caseyplusnatasha.com Thanks for watching! Designer builds efficient off-grid Passive House in Colorado

20:14
Twenty years ago Andrew Michler bought a $60,000 solar shack in the Colorado mountains that “immediately fell apart” and inspired two decades of experiments in off-grid living. Today, he and his wife live in the reconfigured shack and he has turned a former shed on the property into an ultra low-consuming Passive House (Passivhaus). “Passive House is an international building standard that focuses on how to reduce energy consumption in building by about 90% and they did it by physics really it wasn’t developed by builders it was developed by physicists,” explains Michler. “Everything how a building interacts with its environment, the thermal dynamics of how heat transfers through materials, the way that energy is produced in the building, how solar gains come into the building or are avoided in a building so this entire building is basically designed in a spreadsheet.” The home is shaped in a wedge which helps with passive solar orientation and also helps avoid unnecessary surface area and heat loss. The wedge also contributes to an unconventional open plan interior which includes a hanging net bed. A Small Contemporary Cabin on Orcas Island in Eastsound, Washington | Small House Design Ideas

02:48
Small Contemporary Cabin on Orcas Island This is an 804 sq. ft. contemporary cabin in Eastsound, WA that’s available to rent on Airbnb. Perch is located on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington. First built in 2011, Perch was originally designed as a year-round familygetaway and a vacation rental during the busy island summer season. Tucked into a steep rocky hillside, it overlooks East Sound The goal was to design an indoor/outdoor great room that provides areas for both gathering and solo moments. Banks of 8’ tall sliders open the living areas to decks and a window nook serves as a getaway spot or an overnight guest bed. Two private bedrooms bookend a full bath and laundry area. Building on an island is challenging with high labor costs, added outlay for ferry delivery of materials and costly sitework. Leonard went throughnthree designs and finally a process of value-driven design decisions to simplify yet keep a cozy comfortable space. By doing so, she met her $200,000 build budget and spent an additional $30,000 to excavate and pave the steep driveway. That may sound like a lot for an 800sf home, but on this island, it is not unusual. The cost could be greatly reduced if built on the mainland. Some of those value-driven design decisions for this stick built home include: Passive solar – large expanse of glass faces south, minimal windows face north Building Foundation: 28′ square footprint – efficient shape with minimal corners Shed roof: Simplest roof shape. Overhangs create shelter and protective eaves. Insulated joist system with marine plywood ceiling/soffits. Vaulted ceiling throughout rises 8′ to 12′. *Minimize interior walls and doors: *Use of wardrobes in bedrooms opens space & saves cost to build closets. Laundry faces into the small hall. *Kitchen & bath:* Ikea cabinets and “Paperstone” countertops. Designed with straight runs – eliminates those expensive corners and allows the local finish contractor to install instead of importing specialty contractors to the island. Bath tile installed by the owner. *Low Maintenance:* Prefinished Hardie panel products and standing-seam metal roof. Cork flooring. Marmoleum bath flooring. Raw cedar decks with hogwire railings. *Heating*: Low profile convection wall units for flexibility to heat only those areas needed. Living area has a reversible ceiling fan for summer and winter. Through use of overhangs and placement of windows and doors, cooling summer breezes move through home, eliminating need for mechanical cooling. (Orcas also has lower summer temps & humidity than most US locations) Leonard’s success with the home and joy in living in 800 sf, led her to start an online site (ilovesmallhomes.com) offering small home plans. Perch is the first plan with several others currently on the boards. She is currently researching capabilities of area prefab companies to enable a plan purchaser to have an option to have it built and delivered as a modular home. You can rent Perch on Airbnb and test drive this home plan! Highlights: Eastsound, WA On Orca Island Near Rosario Resort and Moran State Park 2 bedrooms 1 bathroom 800 sq. ft. Modern House Shutters - A Passive Design Strategy

08:48
Passive design strategies are becoming widely accepted as a way to drastically reduce the amount of energy a home consumes and low-tech solutions are gaining favor with designers and homeowners. Shutters are one such low-tech means of passively controlling the environment around a building. Operable shutters control light, temper heat, shield or welcome wind, buffer noise and provide privacy. Like a versatile three-season jacket they can help make life more comfortable. This video explores a few modern examples of the multipurpose shutter. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "How to Write Like An Architect" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGUDQ1F5tco -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

"Haus der Zukunft" New solar active house in Regensburg | Small House Design

02:31
The company Sonnenkraft GmbH (subsidiary of the VKR Group) our office developed the house of the future, which should set the standard for the year 2020. In addition to the previously known house type of Passive House, a new, further developed building concept, which is based not only on energy saving but above all on solar energy production, will point the way into the future. From this question we have developed three main theses for living in the future: 1. The place of habitation must be adapted to the user (that is, variably adapting to fast-changing lifestyles, providing the highest level of comfort while maintaining low maintenance, balancing the calming posture with the increasingly hectic outside world and providing a sense of well-being). 2. Integration of building technology / control and building construction (that is, a natural combination of technology and architecture to a homogeneous whole and a high degree of flexibility of the "shell" to easily update new techniques, coupled with intelligent building control). 3. High energy efficiency - ecologically sustainable (That is, the building is supposed to generate the energy that is consumed by itself - the house as its own "power plant", use of building biology materials with low primary energy input and high sustainability). For the model project it was necessary to unite the different "layers" into a harmonious whole. In close cooperation with the Department of Architecture of the University of Applied Sciences Regensburg (Br. Prof. Dr. Lenzen) and the Fraunhofer Institute ISE from Freiburg, our various building designs were examined energetically and architecturally. The generated building shape - similar to a crystal - follows the course of the sun and, even on areas that are not optimally aligned, allows optimal active use of solar energy. The angles of inclination of the wall and roof surfaces are ideally adapted to the respective orientation and type of use (solar thermal or photovoltaic). The structure is constructed as a modern, highly insulated timber frame construction with FJI beam construction. The open main living-living-cooking-dining rooms are fully glazed to the south and connected to the outdoor area without thresholds via large sliding doors. The interior & exterior space merge. In addition to the vertical slats, the cantilevered OG body offers an automatic summer sun protection. The internal development is carried out from a central, through-connected distribution area with open staircase, which separates the individual rooms on the first floor into a children's and parents' area. In the rooms of the upper floor, the polygonal crystalline building form can be experienced spatially. Supporting the theme of the crystal, roof and wall are covered with the same materiality. Solar thermal, photovoltaic surfaces and anthracite-colored, glued cement-bonded fiber panels alternate with each other. The entire building is barrier-free. In case of a change in use, the EC can be separated as a separate housing unit, or the lightweight inner walls can be easily moved. http://www.fabi-architekten.de/projekte/haus_der_zukunft/ More Videos: #tinyhouse #tinyhouses #smallhouse #cottage #cabin #tiny #tinyhome ============================ #TinyHouseLover is a channel sharing homes under 500 sq ft. The Shed Roof - An Architect's Review of a Modern Classic

07:54
In this video I discuss the reasons for choosing a shed roof shape as well as the design implications for doing so. Sheds are structurally simple, site responsive forms that are finely tuned to passive solar collection. With opportunities for daylighting via clerestories, rainwater harvesting and other aesthetic benefits they're a great choice to meld traditional and contemporary design languages. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "How to Write Like An Architect" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGUDQ1F5tco -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Modern Solar Powered Beach House Designs Idea

02:47
Solar power is a possible future for power in our homes. Year after year green ideas become stronger and solar power become stronger with them. Too bad that to power a house with solar energy it should be situated in right part of the planet. Zero Energy Design is one of not many studios that add complex solar solutions in their house designs. Beach house in Truro is one of their works. It was designed to become perfect accommodation of a large family when their living their Boston residence for weekends and summers. There are a lot of bedrooms around the house and many of them have luxury water views. The roof sports a large solar electric array. A battery back-up and energy management system store electricity from the solar array to ensure the basic functions of the home through blackouts without the use of a gas-powered generator. Aside from energy efficient appliances and water heaters lighting system is also designed to be energy efficient The combination the energy efficient building envelope and systems with the solar array will allow the home to produce as much energy as it uses over the course of a year.

A Distinctive Modern Dwelling Manufactured In Britain | Small House Design

03:33
The Edge is a distinctive modern dwelling manufactured in Britain by Boutique Modern Ltd. They produce modular houses that are designed with sustainability and energy-efficiency in mind. One design element that makes the Edge stand out is its exterior framework of galvanized structural steel. Boutique Modern says it was inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Farnsworth House. The steel framework gives the building the needed strength to be delivered from the factory and lifted into place, and to be relocated again if necessary. Unlike the glass-walled Farnsworth House, the Edge’s framework is filled in with a combination of solid walls interspersed with sections of floor-to-ceiling glass. The oak siding, galvanized steel and glass complement each other quite nicely for a pleasing overall appearance. The Edge comes in two sizes, 12.3 m x 6.75 m (about 42′ x 22′) and 15.5 m x 6.75 m (about 52′ x 22′). Although factory-built, each home is built to order and can be customized by the purchaser. As none of the interior walls are load-bearing, the room layouts and window placements can be changed to suit the client and the specific conditions of the destination site. Typically the smaller version will be configured as a two-bedroom floor plan while the larger version will be used for three-bedroom plans. The Edge shown here is the show home for Penmayne Edge Park, a small vacation home development in Rock, North Cornwall that will eventually be home to ten of the modular dwellings. As a show home, it contains a number of optional upgrades. However even the base models leave the Boutique Modern factory with a high level of finishes that include engineered hardwood flooring and in-floor heating. Energy requirements are kept low by the use of highly-insulating structural insulated panels for the walls, floor and roof. The large south-facing windows (window size and placement is customized for the site conditions) allow for passive solar heat gain, and are triple glazed to keep the heat in at night. As a result, Boutique Modern anticipates that passive solar will provide the bulk of the heating. Supplemental heating is electric. To offset a portion of the electricity use, all Edge homes come with one kilowatt of photo-voltaic solar panels as standard equipment, and there is an option for more. Other environmentally friendly features include a rainwater collection system and an optional green roof. Idaho modern oldtimer builds underground & solar $50 houses

24:16
Mike Oehler lived for over 30 years in an underground home that he built for $50 (and expanded for $500) on his land in Northern Idaho near the Canadian border. Now in his seventies his arthritis keeps him from hiking up to his home, but he continues to “write and proselytize” In 1968 like thousands of other San Franciscans hoping to go “back to the land”, Oehler bought property and began to build a homestead. After spending a winter freezing in a small cabin, he designed a home that would use the earth as insulation. With his first attempt he fell into the easy errors of what he calls a “first thought house”: a hole cut into a hillside with south-facing windows. Gradually he began to innovate with subterranean design, creating better ways for letting light in: among them “the Hollywood Wing”, “the Royer foyer”, gables and most-importantly the “uphill patio” (which also provides space for an earth-sheltered greenhouse). He also created an inexpensive, low-tech approach to basic design with what he calls PSP or Post/shoring/polyethlene. Passive Solar Dream House

04:48
Pierre and Manon had a shared dream to someday build a Solar Passive House. They knew they wanted to have a smaller house in order to reduce their environmental footprint, so they started from scratch. They hired a contractor who raised the walls and then Pierre and Manon took it from there! The home has a small footprint, but it doesn’t feel like a small house. It has big rooms and is spacious. A lot of people when building a house don’t necessarily think of its position relative to the sun as they just want the front exterior to look good. However, a priority for the house was for it to be comfortable and for there to be a lot of sun inside during the day. They shared their build journey on social media as Manon realized that a lot of people thought that just because a home was sustainable, meant that it couldn’t be beautiful. Which in this video you will see is very far from the truth! They paid close attention to Passive House standards as they really wanted a house that was comfortable and utilized the sun. Passive House, originally Passivhaus from Germany, sets the bar for energy efficient design. Compared with typical building codes, the Passive House standard achieves huge reductions in building energy consumption, especially for heating and cooling. It’s a flexible design process that works with many different architectural styles, and follows five principles: 1. Airtight Construction – Passive House is the most airtight construction standard in the world, that requires high-quality materials and careful construction techniques. You will not be heating (or cooling) the neighborhood. 2. Thermal Bridge-Free Design – Heat transfers more easily where there are studs or joists than through surrounding insulated areas, a process called thermal bridging. These thermal bridges are eliminated by a continuous layer of insulation around the whole house. 3. Superior Windows – Windows are both a heat gain and loss. In climates with cold winters, the norm for a Passive House is triple-glazed windows with low-emissivity coatings, inert gas fill, and insulated spacers and frames. 4. Quality Insulation – The more insulation the merrier! A high R-value, for example, R-60 walls, means that a Passive House retains more heat, minimizing the energy required for heating. 5. Ventilation with Heat Recovery – We all need air. Heat Recovery or Energy Recovery Ventilation (HRV/ERV) provides fresh air while saving energy. Something special about this home is that it has polished concrete floors, and incorporates many natural, local sources. It’s inspiring to see dreams come true! #passivesolar #housetour #sustainability ------------------------------------------------------------- SUPPORT OUR CHANNEL! ------------------------------------------------------------- We hope you enjoyed this video! This is an efficient single level plan with very modern lines and contemporary building materials. The Owner's Suite has a large split bath with integrated walk in closets. The Owner's baths share a connection through the steam shower. The materials for this project speak to the high desert site and the low western roofline is a response to the need for protection from the late afternoon sun and rangeland fires that can blow in from the west.

A Modern Cabin in the Hills | Simply Home | Small House Design

03:11
Simply Home is a North Carolina homebuilder focused on small, efficient houses. It was founded by Shawna and Wally Hughes, a licensed general contractor who has been building houses for 30 years. Today Wally will tell us about the small house he and Shawna designed and built for their own family of three. Our cabin sits in the foothills of Western North Carolina with a wonderful view of Chimney Rock State Park. After finding the land, we designed a house that would make the best use of the view and fit in with the surroundings. The shed roof design with a high vaulted ceiling and extra space in the loft makes the home feel much bigger than its 704 square feet. The front of the house faces north towards the mountains. We put most of the windows on this side to get a wonderful view from every room. The north windows allow lots of indirect light to flood the home instead of direct light from the south which would make harsh shadows. In our climate it was more important for us to use passive solar techniques in the design for summer cooling purposes instead of focusing on maximizing heat absorption in the winter. During the peak months of summer, none of the windows have any sun directly entering them from 10 AM until 4 PM. Then the trees on the west side start creating shade to help out. We used a metal roof for it’s ability to reflect heat and it’s durability. We set the screen porch on the east side of the house so it has a view of the sunrise and gets some morning sun but is shaded all afternoon during the summer. That way it is still pleasant enough to enjoy dinner in the evening. The front deck is well-shaded and allows us to enjoy watching the sunsets and the weather rolling off of the mountains. Storage space is valuable in a small home and we knew that we needed to plan properly if this size home was going to work. We added a large closet for the things we need. It is a multi-use area that is also the laundry and the hallway between the great room and the bedroom. We built stairs to the loft that give us extra bookshelves and kitchen storage. The loft has a sleeping area for our daughter and more space for storing things that we don’t need immediately. We added a bookshelf in the bedroom, above the door frame, that wraps around three walls. Using natural materials was important to us so we used pine floors and tile in the bathroom and on the countertops. The siding is pine board and batten from a local sawmill. We didn’t want the deck railings to obscure the wonderful view, so we used stainless steel cables. Our little home costs us less to run and is easy to keep clean while giving us time to enjoy the natural beauty around us. Net-zero solar laneway house by Lanefab Design/Build | Amazing Small House Design

03:13
Lanefab Design/Build recently completed this energy-efficient laneway house with Mid-Century Modern styling. “Laneway house” is the term used in Vancouver, British Columbia for a second small house built in the backyard of an existing house, what would be called an accessory dwelling unit in many cities. Vancouver allows laneway houses to be built on residential lots at least 10 m wide where the back of the lot is serviced by an alley. Most residential lots in Vancouver meet those criteria. The house is 70 m2 (753 ft2), the maximum allowed under Vancouver’s regulations governing laneway houses. Not included in that figure is the garage, which is fully insulated and finished. The upper floor is stepped back from the sides of the house as the regulations limit it to 60% of the ground floor area. The 60% rule is intended to reduce the visual bulk of laneway houses and minimize the effect of shadowing on the neighboring properties The main floor living area is one large open room with the kitchen along one wall. The south wall consists of a mostly glass folding door system that opens the whole space up to the adjacent patio. Upstairs is the bedroom, a good-sized bathroom, and the laundry. Windows high in the wall provide light and a view of the sky while maintaining privacy. The bedroom also has south-facing glass doors leading to a small rooftop deck There is a second bathroom on the lower level, complete with shower, but it is unusual in that it is accessed from the garage. Remember though that the garage is insulated and finished. As the owners of the property intended to move into the laneway house themselves, they likely had a specific reason for the unorthodox bathroom configuration. It might be, for example, that they plan to use the garage as some kind of workshop and want to be able to clean up before entering the main living area. If you are planning to live in your house for a long time, it makes sense to design it for your own specific needs rather than following convention. For a more traditional powder room, you could eliminate the shower and move the door to that end, which would provide plenty of privacy for guests. The house is very well insulated and has triple-glazed windows. It was constructed from structural insulated panels that were prefabricated off-site. The south-facing glass doors provide for substantial passive solar heat gain, which is absorbed by the concrete floors on both levels. The combination of very high insulation levels and passive solar heating resulted in a house that requires very little energy to operate. With the addition of rooftop photovoltaic panels for generating electricity, the house is able to generate as much energy over the course of a year as it uses, making it a “net-zero” or “zero-energy building“. Other green features include LED lighting, heat recovery from both ventilation air and waste water, and a rainwater collection system for irrigation. Modern-old Japan mud house: smart & bioclimatic on a budget

15:21
To bring natural homes into the 21 Century, architect Tono Mirai designed “Future House”: a home that blends earth building and traditional joinery with modern design. Located in Miura, Kanagawa (about an hour and a half south of Tokyo), this fusion home was built for a businessman and his wife and 3 children. The client wanted a healthy and natural home as an escape from his daily commute to Tokyo, but wanted something modern. Mirai designed a home oriented to the south so that its earthen floors and walls (of traditional Japanese mud plaster) can act as heat sinks for the winter sun. He built vents into the outer walls to naturally control the flow of air. The extensive living roof also acts as an insulator. Mirai calls it a “very natural way” to insulate, noting that the temperature difference between outside and inside the roof can be more than 10 degrees. With all the passive solar and natural venting, the home doesn’t need AC or heating (beyond a small wood stove) and it delivers a natural air quality and “peacefulness” requested by the client. http://www.tonomirai.com/#!wg-english/c1cdj

Contemporary rural home with solar screen

02:14
Traditional materials used in innovative ways are defining modern architecture in the 21st century This new home was designed to have an intimate connection with the rural landscape. Architect Neal Schwartz discusses the rationale behind the design and position of the house. A home in the country is increasingly seen as an antidote to city living, so it's not surprising to see contemporary rural architecture is also finding a different expression. This house, on a 40-acre ranchland site in California, challenges the local building styles to provide a home that melds with the rugged landscape -- architect Neal Schwartz says it was conceived as a base camp for the owners and their children who love to explore the surrounding hills and tracks. "The architecture is a direct response to the need to link with the outdoors," Schwartz says. "For example, the approach involves a series of thresholds, including bridges over a seasonal watercourse, that foster the idea of movement and exploration. "The geometry of the house also helps. With its long, angled wing, the building appears to embrace the hills behind. And the forced perspective created by a tapering 100ft-long solar screen on the exterior guides the view back into the landscape." Positioning the house low on the site was another way to focus attention on the hills beyond. "For many architects, the first impulse is to conquer a hill by placing the house at the very top. We wanted to flip that idea, so that the hill rises up behind the house, creating a much more powerful experience. It also made sense to build on the flat in terms of construction costs, and there is less noise from the local road. "It was important to keep the house as abstract as possible -- we were not looking Read the full article at http://my.trendsideas.com/#/search/43375 Video: http://my.trendsideas.com/#/search/43678

Super Modern Off-Grid Tiny House - Full Tour

08:14
Go to http://squarespace.com/exploringalternatives to get 10% off your first purchase :) Patrick and Thomas from the Rewild Homes Team built the Blue Heron tiny house to be completely off-grid with a Morso wood stove, 6 x 285 Watt solar panels, rainwater collection, and a Separett composting toilet. The house is built on a 24 foot, 2 axle trailer, and it measures approximately 200 square feet. The roof is gabled, which is a slightly more expensive design than a shed slope roof, but it allows for headroom on both sides of the sleeping loft. Instead of a ladder, Rewild Homes has been getting lots of requests from their clients for stairs, so they've incorporated storage drawes, and they also used the space to store the large solar battery bank above the axles since the batteries weigh close to 1000 lbs. The solar power system is very large for a tiny house, and they did this primarily because they wanted to run the refrigerator on solar power. They use propane to heat water and for the cooktop. For ventilation, they have an industrial style ceiling fan to circulate heat and air, and they have a hood fan above the stove, and a vent in the bathroom to help keep humidity levels down. The exterior of the home is cedar, which can withstand the damp British Columbia climate. Adorable Prispa House by Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 | Charming Small House Design

03:02
Romania’s entry into Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 is called PRISPA (“porch”). The PRISPA team took a keep-it-simple approach to the design of the house, forgoing a lot of the cutting-edge technology favored by the other teams. Instead they adapted tried-and-true materials and systems, using them in innovative ways. As a result, PRISPA was the least-expensive house to build at SDE 2012, and is probably one of the most viable for production. Nevertheless, it still meets the goal of producing more energy than it consumes. The exterior of the small house was designed to appeal to the Romanian market and incorporates elements of vernacular Romanian architecture including the window shutters and the porch for which it is named. The porch gives the home a very welcoming look from the front, though other views are less appealing to us. The roof extends to ground level at the back of the house in order to deflect the cold winds prevalent during Romania’s winters. Take a look and let me know what you think in the comments! Thanks!
