Creative physical activity break from computer work
If you are working at a desk job all day, you should stand up and stretch your body at regular intervals and incorporate movement in any way. This activity could benefit your overall health and energize you, and make you more alert and productive. Creative physical activity with music even for a few minutes is fun, specially in the middle of a busy working day, and you can adapt it to your own style.

Stuxnet Anatomy of a Computer Virus
Stuxnet is a computer worm discovered in June 2010 that is believed to have been created by the United States and Israel to attack Iran's nuclear facilities.[1] Stuxnet initially spreads via Microsoft Windows, and targets Siemens industrial control systems. While it is not the first time that hackers have targeted industrial systems,[2] it is the first discovered malware that spies on and subverts industrial systems,[3] and the first to include a programmable logic controller (PLC) rootkit.[4][5] The worm initially spreads indiscriminately, but includes a highly specialized malware payload that is designed to target only Siemens supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems that are configured to control and monitor specific industrial processes.[6][7] Stuxnet infects PLCs by subverting the Step-7 software application that is used to reprogram these devices.[8][9] Different variants of Stuxnet targeted five Iranian organizations,[10] with the probable target widely suspected to be uranium enrichment infrastructure in Iran;[9][11][12]Symantec noted in August 2010 that 60% of the infected computers worldwide were in Iran.[13] Siemens stated that the worm has not caused any damage to its customers,[14] but the Iran nuclear program, which uses embargoed Siemens equipment procured secretly, has been damaged by Stuxnet.[15][16]Kaspersky Lab concluded that the sophisticated attack could only have been conducted "with nation-state support".[17] This was further supported by the F-Secure's chief researcher Mikko Hyppönen who commented in a Stuxnet FAQ, "That's what it would look like, yes".[18] It has been speculated that Israel[19] and the United States may have been involved.[20][21] In May 2011, the PBS program Need To Know cited a statement by Gary Samore, White House Coordinator for Arms Control and Weapons of Mass Destruction, in which he said, "we're glad they [the Iranians] are having trouble with their centrifuge machine and that we -- the US and its allies -- are doing everything we can to make sure that we complicate matters for them", offering "winking acknowledgement" of US involvement in Stuxnet.[22] According to The Daily Telegraph, a showreel that was played at a retirement party for the head of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Gabi Ashkenazi, included references to Stuxnet as one of his operational successes as the IDF chief of staff.[19] On 1 June 2012, an article in The New York Times said that Stuxnet is part of a U.S. and Israeli intelligence operation called "Operation Olympic Games", started under President George W. Bush and expanded under President Barack Obama.[23] On 24 July 2012, an article by Chris Matyszczyk from cnet[24] reported how the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran e-mailed F-Secure's chief research officer Mikko Hyppönen to report a new instance of malware. On 25 December 2012, an Iranian semi-official news agency announced there was a cyberattack by Stuxnet, this time on the industries in the southern area of the country. The virus targeted a power plant and some other industries in Hormozgan province in recent months.[25] ~Source from Wikipedia

Infant lessons for robotics: James Law at TEDxCardiff
James Law is an award winning research scientist working in the field of robotics. His work focuses on behavioural development in human infants, and the lessons for intelligent autonomous systems. James' passion was sparked at an early age when one of his favourite toys was a programmable robot named George. However, it was only after an encounter with an admissions officer from the University of Wales that he discovered his interest could be turned into a career. After graduating with a Masters degree in Electronic Engineering he went on to obtain his PhD in Intelligent Systems from the Open University. This led to his involvement in robot football, and from 2004-2006 he travelled the world as a manager of the UK team. Despite promising performances at a string of international events, injuries and robot egos meant he never got to raise the coveted world cup. James' recent work within the Computer Science Department at Aberystwyth University has been in the field of Cognitive Robotics. Using an iCub humanoid robot, his team have been modelling infant development and exploring how it handles complex learning problems that are also faced by robots. He was part of the large and highly successful European project IM-CLeVeR, which investigated models for motivation and cumulative learning in robots, and has collaborated with psychologists, neuroscientists, and primatologists across Europe. James has published in leading academic journals, winning two paper awards, and published a book chapter on his work. In 2012 he nominated his robot to carry the Olympic Torch to commemorate computing pioneer Alan Turing's centenary, but it didn't meet the minimum age requirements. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

London 2012 Olympic Games on physical activity in Qld adults
Examining the influence of the London 2012 Olympic Games on physical activity in Australian Queensland adults Danya Hodgetts, Mitch Duncan PLEASE NOTE: Not my best presentation! This was my first presentation using Ustream and my phone was flashing tweets and notifications while I was talking. VERY distracting!!! Please refer to my webpage for the accompanying slides: http://wp.me/p3yMQ-al ABSTRACT: This research aims to empirically determine the impact of the London 2012 Olympic Games on the physical activity levels of Australian (Queensland) Adults. It is commonly reported in the media that merely watching elite sporting events encourages the general population to participate in sport. Much of the discussion about the impact that major sport events have on participation is subjective and is not supported by empirical evidence. There were some anecdotal findings that the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games created a greater interest in sport, but there was no evidence that the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games had any impact on physical activity or sport participation in Australia (Armstrong, Bauman, Ford, & Davies, 2002; Veal & Toohey, 2005). To the contrary, it has actually been suggested that the Olympic Games has a “discouragement effect” whereby watching elite athletes’ prowess has a negative impact on sport participation (Hindson, Gidlow, & Peebles, 1994). Another report (SportScotland, 2004) suggests that elite sport success may only have an impact on those who are already sufficiently active, with little impact on those who report no activity, or are insufficiently active. This notion is supported by research conducted by Weed (2009). In October 2012, two months after the London Olympic Games (LOG), 1,256 Queensland, Australia residents aged 18 and over consented to participate in a computer assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) survey. Participants completed the Active Australia survey to determine physical activity levels. Participants were also asked about their consumption of media during the LOG, whether the LOG influenced their intended or actual physical activity levels, and the motives for their response. Initial analysis shows that 80% of respondents reported consuming some media regarding the LOG, with 44% reporting an increased amount of media consumption for that period. Eighty three per cent of respondents said that the LOG did not have any effect on their intention to undertake sport or physical activity. Additionally, 85% of respondents reported no actual increases in sport or physical activity levels that they would attribute to LOG. Preliminary analysis shows the LOG did not have a large impact on sport and physical activity levels in Australian (Queensland) adults. While there may be cultural differences between different countries, this research makes a contribution towards a greater understanding of mass participation legacies from mega events. Full inferential and qualitative analysis will be completed and reported at SMAANZ.

Pirate FM's Tina Bessell discovers more about ICT and Computer Science at Pool Academy
From designing web pages to editing digital videos to recording music the growth in Information Technology over the last decade has seen it become an essential part of Academy life, so much so that we took the exciting step of introducing iPads for all students in 2013. ICT is now embedded across the Academy in all subjects, from producing movie trailers, creating music in a virtual recording studio, comparing sporting techniques with Olympic athletes, authoring interactive e-books and that’s just for starters! All of our classrooms are equipped for the 21st century with a digital projector and wireless Apple TV to enable students and teachers to display on the classroom board. A full range of GCSE Courses are available to students including ICT, Business and Computer Science where students learn about how computer technology works and develop critical thinking, analysis and problem solving skills through the study of computer programming (‘coding’). As well as an iPad for every student the Academy also offers dedicated IT suites plus smaller departmental suites that host specific software packages for those subjects. Most recently Pool Academy has adopted the use of ‘Google Classrooms’ a new on-line application (app) which was only released in August this year which facilitates a fully interactive means of communication between teachers, students and parents away from the classroom. http://www.poolacademy.co.uk

Lessons in leadership and decision making for engineers
There’s art and science to making the right business decisions. Two entrepreneurs who helped build billion-dollar companies shared their secrets at Stanford School of Engineering. When it comes time to build a startup, engineering and computer science graduates from top-flight universities aren’t likely to stumble over the technical aspects. But the softer skills needed to run a company – leadership, management and decision making – aren’t in everyone’s skill set. At a recent forum at Stanford School of Engineering, two well-known Silicon Valley entrepreneurs – Mike Krieger, the co-founder of Instagram, and Roelof Botha, the first CFO of PayPal and now a partner at Sequoia Capital – shared their thoughts on the art and science of decision making. “Making smart decisions will determine whether you fulfill or fall short of your incredible potential. Take chances, take calculated risks. You won’t achieve the success you dream of if you make a series of safe choices,” Botha said. Early in his career, Botha had a critical decision to make: Take a high-paying job at McKinsey & Company or join PayPal, then just a startup. As he struggled to make the right choice, he took steps that he now recommends when faced with a tough decision: “Seek advice and do research.” In Botha’s case, the advice came from the classmate who later became his wife, and his research took the form of a paper about PayPal’s chances of success that he wrote for a class. Decision making, said Botha, is physically taxing, like an Olympic sport, “so save your energy for the finals.” And don’t make important decisions when you’re tired or stressed. Botha learned that lesson the hard way. He decided to skip a meeting with Twitter because he was fatigued and upset and lost a chance to become an early-stage investor. Although working in teams is very popular in Silicon Valley, Krieger said he gets nervous when they grow to more than a handful. “Every person you add makes decision making more complex. Yes, they bring more expertise to the table, but the amount of time spent ‘driving alignment’ is one of the reasons large companies move so slowly,” he said. Krieger added, “Problem solving and decision making go hand in hand. If you have to make a choice between two things and neither feels right, it means you probably haven’t solved the problem.”

Someone's Trying To Hack The South Korean Winter Olympics
Someone's Trying To Hack The South Korean Winter Olympics A hacker group, likely working on behalf of an unidentified government, has tried to take over the computers of dozens of South Koreans involved in the upcoming Winter Olympics, according to an analysis published this week by the cybersecurity firm McAfee. The email address was spoofed to appear to come from South Korea's National Counter-Terrorism Council, which has hosted counter-terrorism drills in Pyeongchang in preparation for the Olympics. "From what we can tell, they're trying to potentially establish the ability to gather information on chatter, communications around the upcoming Olympics," Sherstobitoff told BuzzFeed News. "With any espionage activity, there's a first stage reconnaissance to understand who is interesting, casting a wide net," Sherstobitoff said. McAfee declined to speculate who was behind the attack, save to say the attachment's sophistication and the nature of its targets strongly indicate a nation-state directed it. Nation-state hacking groups often reuse tactics, and Sherstobitoff's team has not previously identified activity clearly linked to this operation, indicating it's a new tool or campaign. The name of the World Anti-Doping Agency was misstated in an earlier version of this post. CORRECTION

This Olympian, Mom and Entrepreneur is Revolutionizing the Way Kids Learn to Read
Julia Dexter is a tech entrepreneur and a former Olympian who competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia representing Canada as a member of the canoe kayak team. She began her business career in graphic design and has gone on to lead several successful technology ventures. Now, Julia has taken her tech business experience and a passion for literacy to create Squiggle Park, a learning game app to improve literacy rates for children worldwide. Growing up, Julia’s primary passion was sports. “When I was a kid, I had no doubt, I wanted to be an Olympic athlete. I was a swimmer for about 13 years. It's what I dedicated my life to, morning and night. I swam, and I made myself better, and I loved it. I thought I'd be a swimming Olympian, which wasn't the case.” When a canoe kayak coach came to her high school to recruit athletes, Julia, raised her hand. “I just loved the new challenge. The idea, that I could become so much better at something, again. It wasn't about refining little pieces, anymore. It was about big, big improvement, day over day.” Julia progressed quickly, she set her sights on the Olympic games, and four years later she was representing Canada at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. After the Olympics, Julia decided to hang up her paddle, get married and start a family. She shifted her career focus and began to pursue a career in graphic design which led her into the world of tech startups. Julia’s latest venture is as co-founder and CMO of Squiggle Park which aims to improve literacy rates for children worldwide. “My business partner Leah and I had worked in technology for quite a while, and we were getting more and more into gamification, and understanding how to motivate people to do things through games. We both had experiences in our lives where, people had struggled with literacy. We had an opportunity to work with a research team, to build out a reading skills methodology that would really accelerate the master. It was really about understanding early literacy, how to build a curriculum that kids could really master and grow confidence, and then wrapping it in a game that would just be so much fun and easy to play; because we're talking about the youngest, little learners, preschool kids. So, it had to be something that they could play independently and easily.” In October 2016, Squiggle Park released a pilot to teachers and now is used in over 6,000 schools around the world. “I’m so proud of the brand, the content, and just the success of the program itself. We're used, now, in the U.S. and Canada, but also in Mexico, China, Oman, Germany. That to me, is really exciting, to start to see people around the world, benefit from what we've built.” Reflecting on her life, Julia credits her success to focus, intensity, hard work and an unwillingness to give up. “I've learned that building business, is harder than going to the Olympics. I think that the persistence is so key, the idea that you just can't give up, because you never know what's around the corner. It's about pushing yourself beyond where you think you can go.” ABOUT TRUE CALLING: Our philosophy is simple: love what you do. Olympic Sochi 2014 Downhill for Ski & Snowboard Simulator SkyTechSport
The Olympic Sochi 2014 mountain resort -- is now available for SkyTechSport Ski & Snowboard simulator. www.skytechsport.com/sochi2014 The next year's destination! The hottest mountain of the year! This year became a turning point in professional winter sports with SkyTechSport introducing most recent development -- the downhill simulator and the exact GPS replica of Sochi 2014 Olympic downhill racecourse. The entire 2.2-mile downhill course in Olympic Roza Khutor was scanned and rendered in meticulous detail, foot by foot, so that not only every turn, jump, side-hill and traverse is right where it was designed on the course by Bernhard Russi, but the trees can be seen just where they happened to emerge from under the snow. More important though are complex interrelations between the virtual terrain, profile of the slope and angles of turns on the one hand, — and technique of a skier on the machine on the other. The new SkyTechSport machines incorporate powerful drives that recreate  downhill G-force effect, simulating intense vibrations and compression effects of up to 150 kg in load value. What is more, the computer system accurately adjusts the image of a running slope to the skier's position on the Simulator, both creating a stunning visual experience and letting us all witness a giant leap of progress in professional sports equipment. SkyTechSport got Olympic-standard ski training onto a fundamentally different level with Olympic teams already using the machines to prepare their athletes before races. They acknowledge the simulators to be the fastest (and safest) way of refining the technique to perfection, learning the course and training the necessary muscle groups. The potential of the unequalled technology and equipment is as great as the peaks of Zermatt, Beaver Creek and Les Trois Vallées combined, even more so as the plans for the near future include rendering more and more famous ski areas. www.skytechsport.com/sochi2014
