Many Children With Asthma Use Their Inhalers Incorrectly, Leading To Serious Complications
Experts offer tips for proper use that will have kids and their parents breathing easier. More information on pediatric asthma: https://www.nationaljewish.org/conditions/pediatric-asthma/overview Learn more about Dr. Lanser: https://www.nationaljewish.org/doctors-departments/providers/physicians/bruce-j-lanser DENVER -- Common mistakes taking inhaled medications for asthma leave many patients with uncontrolled asthma, leading to unnecessary asthma attacks, emergency room visits and hospital admissions among the seven million children with asthma in the United States. “We see a lot of children, in fact, who just don’t know how to use their inhalers at all,” said BJ Lanser, MD, a pediatrician and asthma specialist at National Jewish Health in Denver. “For whatever reason, they were given the inhalers but were never taught the proper techniques in how to use them, and that can lead to serious problems.” Poor inhaler technique fails to deliver medications deep into the airways where they are needed. Among the more common mistakes children make is using an inhaler without a spacer, a plastic tube attached to the mouthpiece. When children activate the inhaler, the spacer lets the medication mix with air so that it can be inhaled more effectively. For smaller children, spacers often are paired with masks to make the process easier. “Without a spacer, 70 to 80 percent of the medicine ends up in the child’s mouth and never gets deep into the lungs where it needs to be,” said Lanser. “If they continue to make those mistakes dose after dose, their symptoms begin to worsen and often those children end up in the hospital.” That’s just what happened to 10-year-old Amanda Grabel of Santa Fe, New Mexico. “She was about 7 when we noticed that she would have really bad asthma attacks whenever she got a cold,” said Rori Grabel, Amanda’s mother. “We saw doctor after doctor and they threw more and more medicine at her, but nothing was working.” In addition to their family doctor, the Grabels saw an allergy specialist, a pediatric pulmonologist and made several frantic trips to the ER. “Amanda was afraid to go to sleep at night, because she was afraid she was going to die,” Grabel said. “That’s how bad things had gotten.” After seeing doctors in three states, the Grabels took Amanda to see Dr. Lanser at National Jewish Health in Denver and were relieved by his evaluation. “Amanda didn’t need any more medicine,” said Lanser. “She had the right medication, she just wasn’t taking it properly. So, we really worked with her on technique when using her inhaler and today, she’s thriving.” If your child uses an inhaler to control asthma, here are some tips to help them get the most out of their medicine: Always stand when using an inhaler. Standing allows the lungs to fully expand so the medication can get where it is needed most. Look straight ahead. You want to make sure your head is in a neutral position, not leaning forward or backward. This will help direct the medicine into your airways and prevent it from collecting in your mouth. Before you inhale, exhale. Have your child take some normal breaths and then a big, deep breath, then fully exhale so the lungs are empty. Then, when your child inhales, the medicine gets deep into the lungs. Inhale slowly. Even if you are having trouble breathing at the time, be sure to inhale your medicine slowly. If you hear a whistling sound from your spacer, you know you are inhaling too quickly. Close your lips around the mouthpiece. Because the medicine is aerosolized, it can easily escape the mouthpiece, so be sure to make a tight seal with your lips to get all the medication into your lungs. Just a little training made a big difference for Amanda. Today, she runs, plays soccer and tennis and plays the trumpet in the band. “I feel like I don’t even have asthma anymore,” she said. “I know that I do, but now I can just be happy and not worry about anything because it’s under control.”
Pediatric Asthma Complications Side Effects of Asthma
There are two types of physical damage to a child's airways with non treated or under treated asthma. One is a thickening or scarring of the breathing tubes. The other is that the lungs will not fully grow or branch in the first 7 year of life. Both of these are totally or partially reversible with proper asthma treatment and control.

Portland Teen Tackling Nearly Fatal Asthma Attack
PORTLAND, Tenn.- The community is helping a teen tackle an asthma attack that nearly took her life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 26 million Americans suffer from asthma. More than 7 million are under the age of 18, like Ashley Beasley. The Portland High School sophomore suffered complications with an asthma attack and rhinovirus six weeks ago. More than a hundred people are at Richland Park on this bright, Sunday helping the teen get though one of her darkest times. Jacki Beasley, Ashleys mother says, "On August 29th she called me from a friends house and said she was having an asthma attack, They called an ambulance because she had passed out." Jacki Beasley says emergency crews flew her daughter to Centennial Childrens Hospital in Nashville. She had a brain injury due to losing oxygen for more than 10 minutes. Doctors put the 16-year-old in a medically induced coma for a week. Beasley says, Rhinovirus is really fast acting, you're deprived of oxygen that asthma triggersit's definitely a struggle." Not only for Ashley, but also her brother who suffers from the disease also. Each day 9 Americans die from asthma. There are more than 3,600 deaths due to asthma each year, many of which are avoidable with proper treatment and care (Asthma Allergy Foundation of America). Beasley says Ashley is improving, We can see something different about every day. She blinks and squeezes. Sarah Brown says, "She's always been a fighter and we have faith that she is going to keep getting stronger . Ashley is just a wonderful person, so I wanted to do something ." Sarah Brown is a family friend and organizer of today's fundraiser/walk. Brown says, Supporting her will make her stronger and the family stronger. I want her to graduate and do the things she loves. Beasley says, "The community support has been amazing. I never dreamed that my family or she would mean so much to this town that we have." Ashley Beasley is expected to be released from the hospital by Tuesday. Her family says she will do a combination of physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Uncontrolled Asthma and Interleukin 13 [HD]
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by variable airflow limitations, airway hyper-responsiveness and inflammation, as well as structural changes to the airway and increased mucus production. These changes can lead to shortness of breath, wheezing, and complications such as asthma exacerbation that can lead in turn, to hospitalization and is a primary concern among asthma patients. Asthma is estimated to affect 300 million people worldwide with the highest prevalence found in developed countries. Yet, despite efforts of National and International Health Organizations and their respective Guidelines, Asthma control is not optimal in all patients with the current recommended options. Asthma is an heterogeneous disease, but apparently there is an "one size fits all" approach which assumes that all Asthma is driven by the same mechanism and that is increasing inflammation that drives increasing severity. Recognition of Asthma biological heterogeneity is increasing and more targeted options are being explored for patients with uncontrolled asthma. A significant pathway in the immune response that can lead to respiratory inflammation in patients with asthma is that of Interleukin 13 or IL13. Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition where the airways in the lungs are inflamed and narrowed causing breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness and coughing. Symptoms come as recurrent episodes known as asthmatic attacks most commonly at night or early in the morning. Pathology of asthma: The lungs contain millions of air tubes or airways, called bronchi and bronchioles, which bring air in and out of the body. The airways have a layer of smooth muscle in their wall which enables them to constrict or dilate. In people suffering from asthma these airways are inflamed, narrowed and become more sensitive to certain substances. Asthmatic attack, or exacerbation, happens when the airways react to these substances. During an attack, the smooth muscle contracts, squeezing the airways, making them even narrower; mucus secretion is also increased which further obstructs the airways. Asthma is most commonly considered as an inflammatory response disease where the body’s immune system over-reacts to certain environmental agents. Causes of asthma are complex and not fully understood but likely involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Family history is a known risk factor for asthma. There are at least over twenty genes associated with asthma of which many are involved in the immune system. Triggers are factors that initiate the attack. Common triggers include: - allergens, such as pollen, animal fur, pet dander, sulfites in preserved food.. - irritants, such as cigarette smoke, industrial chemicals, dust, household chemicals,.. - medications, such as aspirin, beta blockers,.. - physical activities, exercises. There is no cure for asthma. The most effective way to manage symptoms is to identify the triggers of asthmatic attacks and avoid them. There are two main classes of medication: - Bronchodilators - substances that dilate bronchi and bronchioles - are used as short-term relief of symptoms. - Inflammation moderators such as corticosteroids are taken as long-term treatments. Asthma inhalers are used to deliver the medication to the lungs. A number of conditions tend to occur more frequently in people with asthma and should be taken into account when treating asthma: - Allergies, such as eczema and hay fever. These individuals are considered hyper-allergic – they have high tendency to develop allergic reactions. The combination of these conditions is known as atopy or atopic syndrome. Immunotherapy may be recommended for this group of patients. - Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD - a condition in which stomach acid backs up and damages the mucosal lining of the esophagus. GERD may worsen asthma symptoms and medications for asthma often worsen GERD symptoms. Treating GERD usually improves asthma and must be included in an asthma treatment plan. - Obstructive sleep apnea or OSA – obstruction of the airway at the throat level during sleep. Asthmatic patients are at higher risks of developing OSA. The mechanism of this association is largely unknown. - Sinusitis: inflammation of paranasal sinuses. Sinusitis commonly worsens asthma symptoms and makes treatments less effective.

Can one survive an Asthma attack without an inhaler? - Dr. Harihara Murthy
Asthma in an acute phase can be extremely dangerous. Giving medication at the right time is the only solution for an acute asthmatic attack. Emergency treatment is essential for treating an asthmatic patient who is having an acute attack. It is unfortunate that people resort to other methods in saving the life of a patient or reducing the intensity of the attack adequately. There are lot of misconceptions about the usage of inhaled medication especially the use of inhalers especially in asthma, a so called addiction to inhalers is misconceived. What people do not realize is that inhaled medication acts the faster in a person who has got asthma, even quicker than other oral medication can invariably that is safe and a sensitive method because the inhaled medicine does not have any serious side effects in the individual when it enters the blood stream in microscopic quantities. So it is a safe, tried method in patients can avail of and an emergency situation it can be as easy as keeping it in your pocket.

Asthma - What Happens During an Asthma Attack?
In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that over 24 million people have asthma. The agency also reports that tragically, about 9 people die from asthma each day. So what happens during an asthma attack? According to the CDC, an asthma attack may include coughing, chest tightness, wheezing and trouble breathing. The attack happens in the body’s airways, which are the paths that carry air to the lungs. As the air moves through the lungs, the airways become smaller. During an asthma attack, the sides of the airways in the lungs swell and the airways shrink. Less air gets in and out of the lungs, and mucous that the body makes clogs up the airways even more. So how can someone determine if they or a family member has asthma? The CDC states that it can be hard to tell if someone has asthma, especially in children under the age of 5. Having a doctor check how well a person’s lungs work and checking for allergies is an important step. The doctor will ask if a person coughs a lot, especially at night. He or she will inquire whether any breathing problems are worse after physical activity or at certain times of the year. The doctor will ask about chest tightness, wheezing and colds lasting more than 10 days. Questions about whether anyone in the family has or has had asthma, allergies or other breathing problems are also typically asked. Finally, the doctor will ask questions about the person’s home and if they have missed school or work, or have trouble doing certain things. The doctor will also likely do a breathing test, called spirometry, to find out how well a person’s lungs are working. For those diagnosed with asthma, avoiding asthma triggers that can cause an attack is important for managing the condition. Some of the common triggers listed by the CDC include tobacco smoke, dust mites, outdoor air pollution, cockroach allergen, animal dander, mold, pollen, smoke from burning wood or grass, and breathing various chemicals. Indoor environmental tests are available to identify these and other known asthma triggers. These are just a few things to know about what happens during an asthma attack. Friends rally to support boy hospitalized after asthma attack
CLEVES, Ohio (WKRC) - Friends and neighbors are rallying around the family of a 12-year-old boy hospitalized from complications of an asthma attack. Brandon Hawkins is the youngest of four children. He's a very bright student and loves dinosaurs. He's had asthma all his life, but on May 15, he had his worst episode yet; one that send him to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) in a helicopter. On the way to the hospital he went into cardiac arrest and suffered a stroke. "His initial prognosis was not good, but he's actually beating the odds," said Brian Hawkins, Brandon's father. He and the boy's mother, Jackie, have been by his side every day. Brian is a Cincinnati firefighter and Julie works at CCHMC. They've put their lives on hold to be with their son. Friends and neighbors are filling in the cracks. "The phrase it takes a village- it really does. Our small little village and our families, they are- they're helping with our kids, they're giving them rides, I mean they're just- I can't even tell you how grateful I am," Jackie said. Tuesday night, May 31, that village- Cleves to be specific- held a fundraiser to help the family get through this tough time. Skyline Chili donated a portion of their sales to the family and friends sold baked good and buttons with the message #BelieveInBrandon. "It was automatic support. I can honestly say the school, the community, family, friends, everyone, people were trying to figure out how to help and that's where the buttons came in," said family friend Crystal Jones-McNeil. So far they've sold more than 1,000 buttons and have ordered more. Meanwhile, Brandon's parents said he's making some progress. He's started to look around and is moving some of his limbs. They said doctors are still trying to figure out why his condition deteriorated so quickly after the asthma attack.

Health Alert: Asthma and allergy complications going around
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- Theres a rise in breathing complications going around the Tri-State. Family medicine experts at TriHealth said it was not peoples imaginations. Complaints of shortness of breath were way up bringing people into area doctors offices and emergency rooms. Blame it on the sudden surge of allergies and allergens in full bloom. Doctor Scott Woods told Local 12 News he saw a rise in complications at Bethesda North Hospital and also at his practice in Norwood, Bethesda Family Medicine. He said it could also party be the humidity. This time of year though is very difficult on people with lung disease; the high humidity, emphysema, COPD puts a lot of stress on the heart and lungs so we see a lot more people coming in for shortness of breath, said Dr. Woods. His main concern was that especially kids as they head back to school get proper medications so they don't chase symptoms as the allergy and asthma season gets worse. It's clearly been the worst allergy season I have seen in 20 years. It's been an intense year and especially if your child has had bad allergies historically, it would be good to get ahead of it. Particularly if your child has asthma; get them on medicine now before September takes hold and those things can really flare intensively, advised Dr. Woods. Dr. Woods said if people wait to gut it out, as kids get back into classes they get even more miserable when the fall allergies flourish. Over the counter stuff may not be enough; inhalers and even steroids or allergy shots or drops year round may be needed. Follow Liz Bonis on Twitter @lbonis1, and LIKE her on Facebook. Can previous Miscarriage lead to complications with asthma? - Dr. Sunita Pawar Shekokar
There are different causes of the miscarriage. But if you don’t take the anti asthmatic medication then you will have abortion or previous abortion. Because of that you will not have miscarriage in this pregnancy even if you are taking the anti asthmatic medicine. So anti asthmatic medications are very safe in pregnancy and previous abortion has no relation with anti asthmatic medication in this pregnancy.

Can Children Outgrow Asthma?
It’s the most common chronic disease for children. Health experts say more than 7 million children in the U.S. live with asthma. Dr. Emad Salman, medical director at Golisano Children’s Hospital, says most children can outgrow asthma. “Some kids with asthma or with wheezing will get better with time. They will improve on their own.” Asthma is a respiratory disease that can happen to children at any age. It affects almost nine percent of the U.S. pediatric population. “It can be life threatening. There are cases of asthma every year that will die,” said Dr. Salman. Common triggers for asthma are respiratory infections, allergies, pollen, weather changes, and second hand smoke. “Usually there’s a trigger and then the airway of the child gets tightened so air cannot go through and then they are grasping for breath,” said Dr. Salman. Learning the patient’s triggers can help them avoid an asthma attack. Health experts also suggest breathing techniques and medication to help the child manage their symptoms. Children with asthma may experience difficulty breathing, chest tightness, and wheezing or coughing. “Just because you wheeze does not mean you have asthma, but if you have asthma you will wheeze,” said Dr. Salman. He says over time the child will either outgrow asthma or learn the best ways to manage it. Isocyanates: Exposure Risks & Occupational Asthma
Workers in a number of industries can be exposed to a family of chemicals known as isocyanates. Isocyanates are the raw materials that make up polyurethane products and exposure can lead to potential health concerns. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), “They are widely used in the manufacture of flexible and rigid foams, fibers, coatings such as paints and varnishes, and elastomers, and are increasingly used in the automobile industry, auto body repair, and building insulation materials. Spray-on polyurethane products containing isocyanates have been developed for a wide range of retail, commercial, and industrial uses to protect cement, wood, fiberglass, steel and aluminum, including protective coatings for truck beds, trailers, boats, foundations, and decks.” Isocyanates are powerful irritants to the mucous membranes of the eyes and gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Direct skin contact can also cause marked inflammation. Isocyanates can also sensitize workers, making them subject to severe asthma attacks if they are exposed again. In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that isocyanates are one of the most common chemical causes of work-related asthma. Isocyanates include compounds classified as potential human carcinogens and known to cause cancer in animals. NIOSH reports that, “Preventing exposure to isocyanates is a critical step in eliminating the health hazard. Engineering controls such as closed systems and ventilation should be the principal method for minimizing isocyanate exposure in the workplace. Other controls, such as worker isolation and use of personal protective equipment such as respirators and personal protective clothing to prevent dermal exposures may also be necessary. Early recognition of sensitization and prompt and strict elimination of exposures is essential to reduce the risk of long-term or permanent respiratory problems for workers who have become sensitized.” These are just a few things to know about isocyanates in the work environment. COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), Chronic Bronchitis, Emphysema-NCLEX Part 1
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) nursing NCLEX lecture on the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, types (chronic bronchitis and emphysema), complications, and how it is diagnosed. COPD is a pulmonary disease that causes chronic obstruction of airflow from the lungs. The cause of the limited airflow is due to chronic inflammation and narrowing of the bronchioles which becomes deformed over time and produces excessive mucous (mainly in chronic bronchitis) and the loss of elasticity of the alevoli sacs (mainly found in emphysema). These problems lead to limited gas exchange such as respiratory acidosis due to extreme retention of carbon dioxide (CO2) and low availability of oxygen. COPD is a "catch all" term used to describe diseases that limit airflow which now includes diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Patients with chronic bronchitis are sometimes referred to as "blue bloaters". This is because of the cyanosis and edema (hence the bloating) experienced with this disease. Patients with emphysema are sometimes referred to as "pink puffers". These patients do not experience cyanosis, although they have low oxygen levels but maintain a "pink" appearance due to the compensatory state of hyperventilation keeping the oxygen level sufficient enough. The hyperventilation leads to the increased usage of the accessory muscles which leads to a barrel chest look (increased anteroposterior diameter noted on inspection). Parnayama Yoga For Asthma In Tamil
ஆஸ்துமா ஒரு Parnayam யோகா yoga therapy is known to cure asthma and not just manage it. In particular, it lessens the allergic reaction in your lungs. Some benefits of Yoga for Asthma patients are: You are able to control your breathing much better as breathing very fast is one of the major problems of an asthma patient. Although you are breathing fast, the oxygen is not being absorbed in your body. Practicing slow breathing would not only improve your breathing but also allow you to control it better. You do not breathe quickly even if you are not inhaling enough air. Asthma patients tend to hold their breath for long in an attempt to get more oxygen out of the air that they have inhaled. This can aggravate the condition as this puts more pressure on your internal organs. You are able to take breathe from the diaphragm which helps you in getting used to taking deep and more relaxed breaths. The severity of an asthma attack, if and when it happens, can be significantly reduced if you have been practicing Yoga. Although one should never make the mistake of ignoring asthma medication, Yoga can help to calm and de-stress your body and prevent the severe impact of an asthma trigger. Moreover, if you get an asthma attack, the practice of slow breathing would help you survive the complication posed by constricted airways much better. A functional advantage of yoga is having control over your nervous reflexes. This facilitates you to lessen the excessive movement of the parasympathetic nerves. Benefits of yoga and its asanas can be varied. They not only help in calming down the stressed muscles in your chest, so that you can breathe more effortlessly but they also discharge the energy blocks. Overturned asanas also deplete mucus from your lungs. Meditation aids in calming you and complements your mind and your body. Pranayama also transports numerous benefits. Pranayama brings deeper advantages than the simple involuntary result of exercising the lungs. Asthma makes the patients hold too much air in the lungs and also breathe quickly. Both these complications put undue pressure on the heart and lungs. In order to control this, you should practice the Bhrastika Pranayama, which is deep breathing but time yourself to 12 or lesser breaths a minute. Including these breathing exercises in your daily life, you would surely lessen the strains on your heart and lungs. Subscribe link http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=yogatutorials

ER visits for childhood asthma attacks fell 17 percent overall in 20 metropolitan areas that prohibit smoking in public places such as restaurants and hotels, researchers found. The study doesn't confirm that the clean air laws directly boost lung health in kids. But, it makes a strong case, according to the researchers from Brown University, the University of Chicago Medical Center and Kansas University. For each hospital, they compared asthma attacks that occurred during the three years before and three years after local indoor-smoking bans began. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2017/01/09/Kids-asthma-flareups-fall-after-smoking-bans/1941483991940/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
