Christina Applegate Recalls Breast Cancer Diagnosis: "There's Such a Sense of Loneliness"

Christina Applegate is paying it forward. The former Married With Children star says she's "always on the phone" these days talking to fellow breast cancer patients and survivors. "I always get really nervous right before I get on the phone, because I think that this person might need to hear something different than the girl I talked to two weeks ago," Applegate says. "But the one thing that helped me was, "I'm here for you," so that you never feel alone and I think when you get diagnosed with cancer there's such a sense of loneliness, but we need to know as people going through this is that you're not alone." http://www.eonline.com/news/595273/christina-applegate-recalls-breast-cancer-diagnosis-there-s-such-a-sense-of-loneliness?cmpid=rss-000000-rssfeed-365-topstories&utm_source=eonline&utm_medium=rssfeeds&utm_campaign=rss_topstories http://www.wochit.com

Christina Applegate on Surviving Cancer

09:40
When Christina Applegate was three months old, she made her acting debut in her mother’s arms on the daytime soap opera “Days of our Lives.” After performing in commercials for K Mart and appearing in several movies and TV shows, she received her breakthrough role as teen air head Kelly Bundy on Fox’s popular sitcom “Married… With Children” at age fifteen. After an impressive 11 seasons, the show ended in 1997. In the summer of 2008, Applegate was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. Due to early detection through an MRI, the cancer was not life threatening; however, Applegate elected to have a double mastectomy due to her family history of breast cancer. Applegate started a program to help women at high risk for breast cancer to meet the costs of an MRI, which is not always covered by insurance. Christina Applegate has more surgery to prevent cancer

04:50
Actress Christina Applegate has revealed that she had both her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to decrease her chance of developing ovarian cancer.Applegate, 45, was diagnosed with breast cancer nine years ago, and she had a double mastectomy to treat it.The same year she was diagnosed, her cousin was killed by ovarian cancer. Since the star, who has a six-year-old daughter, is BRCA positive, which means a person is more likely to develop ovarian and breast cancers, she decided to have another procedure to decrease her chances of dying from cancer.Applegate told NBC that taking control of the situation and getting the procedure provided her with a sense of relief. The fact that her daughter, Sadie, is likely BRCA positive weighs on Applegate, she told NBC.She said: 'The chances that my daughter is BRCA positive are very high. I look at her and feed her the cleanest foods.'She added: 'I'm doing everything I can on my end knowing that in 20 years, she'll have to start getting tested.Hopefully by then there will be advancements. 'Applegate also shared that she visits her oncologist every six months and that she eats only organic foods. She does this to reduce the amount of pesticides, fertilizers and other harmful chemicals she puts in her body, as this has been shown to reduce one's chances of developing cancer.'We grow our own vegetables. We're a 100 percent organic house. My daughter is a vegetarian and practically vegan. That's her choice,' Applegate said. The procedure that she had done is called a salpingo-oophorectomy, and it is designed to remove a woman's ovaries and fallopian tubes at once. The surgery decreases women's chances of developing both breast and ovarian cancer, which is the fifth deadliest cancer for women and kills more women than any other gynecologic cancer.Ovaries are organs that sit on either side of a woman's uterus, and they contain eggs and regulate the production of hormones controlling their menstrual cycles.Fallopian tubes are what eggs travel through to get from ovaries to the uterus. When a woman decides to have both removed to prevent a cancer diagnosis, the organs are typically taken out at the same time because they share a common blood supply.Applegate's recent operation is performed one of two ways: through an abdominal incision that is six to 12 inches long or laparoscopically, which requires three to five incisions that are about one to one-and-a-half inches long. The outpatient laparoscopic version of the operation is the most common, according to Ohio State University professor of gynecology Dr David Cohn.He said that the main thing women who choose to have the operation need to be aware of is the fact that the surgery will induce menopause since their ovaries will be removed. While recovering from either form of the surgery, women might experience pain and they should not lift anything more than 10 pounds for a couple of weeks, Dr Cohn said.Additionally, following the procedure, a woman will not be able to conceive. Dr Leigha Senter-Jamieson, who is an associate professor of human genetics at Ohio State, said that doctors try to make sure that women who are considering the surgery have accepted the fact that they will no longer be able to have children. She added that some women elect to have their eggs frozen prior to the surgery and that the patients she sees who are thinking about having the operation do not make the decision lightly.Dr Senter-Jamieson explained that an average woman's chance of developing ovarian cancer is about one-and-a-half percent, but a BRCA positive woman has a 20 to 40 percent chance, which makes the procedure worth it for many of them.'Once we explain the high likelihood, there's a feeling of helplessness,' she said.'[The surgery] is one of the few tools they can put in their toolbox. 'The feeling of relief that Applegate described experiencing after her operation is not uncommon among patients who choose to have the surgery, according to Dr Senter-Jamieson.'You feel like you've put yourself in a position of power,' she said. Certain women have higher chances of developing ovarian cancer than others, including middle-aged women, women who have previously had breast or colon cancer - such as Applegate -  and some women who have trouble getting pregnant.Additionally, some research suggests that women who take estrogen without also taking progesterone for more than 10 years have higher chances of developing ovarian cancer.Other risk factors include smoking, polycystic ovary syndrome, using an intrauterine device and undergoing fertility treatments. While no definite ways of preventing ovarian cancer are known, the CDC has said that women who take birth control pills for more than five years, have given birth, have breastfed or have had their tubes tied have lower chances.

Christina Applegate cancer history and survival story

01:13
Christina Applegate was born on 25th November, 1971. She is an American actress and dancer known for her role in, The Sweetest Thing, Grand Theft Parsons, Hall Pass, Vacation and Bad Moms. When she landed a starring role on “Samantha Who?” she seemed on fire in her life and career, she was nominated for both Emmy and Golden Globe award. Then cancer showed up in April 2008. She was only 36 years old. Due to her mother’s personal battle with breast cancer, she had been getting regular mammograms since she was 30 years old. Within a week of her diagnosis, she had her first lumpectomy. It appeared she would only have six weeks of radiation instead of chemotherapy. But when her test for the breast cancer gene, BRCA, came back positive, it changed everything. She had a choice, radiation and regular check-ups or remove her breasts. The first emotional toll seemed easy compared to the loss and physical pain she felt after having the double mastectomy in July 2008. On August 19, 2008, it was announced that Applegate was cancer free after a double mastectomy, She has started Right Action for Women to help provide the funds for women who did need MRI screenings and weren’t able to pay for it themselves. If she can do it, you can too. CancerBro is also active on social media channels. She played the lead role in the television sitcoms Jesse (1998–2000) and Samantha Who? (2007–09) and starred in the NBC comedy Up All Night (2011–12) before leaving over the creative direction of the series, which was canceled shortly afterward. Christina Applegate was born in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, to record producer/executive Robert William Applegate and singer-actress Nancy Priddy. Her parents split-up shortly after her birth. She has two half-siblings from her father's re-marriage - Alisa (b. 10 October 1977) & Kyle (b. 15 July 1981). Alisa and Christina are best friends and even lived together while Alisa was going to college. Christina's mother took her along on all of her auditions and acting jobs. She made her acting debut at age five months, when her mother got her in a commercial for Playtex nursers. Her mother never remarried, but kept company with Stephen Stills. Christina still cherishes a guitar Stephen gave her when she was young. She played in a number of TV series before landing her breakout role in Married with Children (1987) in 1987. Christina still studies jazz dance. In 1987, Applegate played the role of the ditzy, sexually promiscuous daughter, Kelly Bundy, on the Fox Network's first sitcom, Married... with Children. She portrayed her character for ten years (1987–97). While working on the series, Applegate was seen in Dance 'til Dawn (1988, NBC) and in Streets (1990), in which a teenaged drug addict is stalked by a psychotic police officer. Applegate guest-starred in 21 Jump Street (1988) and Top of the Heap (1991, as Kelly Bundy), and hosted Saturday Night Live (May 8, 1993, and October 13, 2012) and MADtv (1996). On August 3, 2008, People magazine reported that Applegate had been diagnosed with breast cancer. This was confirmed by her representative who said in a statement, "Christina Applegate was diagnosed with an early stage of breast cancer. Benefiting from early detection through a doctor-ordered MRI, the cancer is not life-threatening. Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery. No further statement will be issued at this time." On August 19, 2008, it was announced that Applegate was cancer free after a double mastectomy, even though cancer was found in only one breast. She has an inherited genetic trait, a BRCA1 mutation, which can trigger breast cancer. Her mother, Nancy Priddy, is a breast cancer survivor. Applegate said when she first was diagnosed, "I was just shaking and then also immediately, I had to go into 'take-care-of-business-mode' which included a change to a more healthy diet."

Actress given clean bill of health after being diagnosed with breast cancer

00:48
SHOTLIST AP Entertainment Los Angeles, 20 September 2006 1. Set-up shot actor Christina Applegate 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Christina Applegate, Actor, on being a woman in Hollywood: "It is a strange business, because you do have young girls coming in all the time, and then as women like myself get a little bit older... What do you now, do you play a mother, what do you do, and the shelf life of an actress in this business is so difficult and for the women that have been able to surpass that and not just be a flavour of the month. Those are the women that we are honouring here" AP Entertainment Los Angeles, 2 December 2007 3. SOUNDBITE: (English) Christina Applegate, Actor, "Samantha Who?": "It's to get more massages, it's huge...because I work sixteen hours a day, and I don't do that enough for myself and I think it would benefit everybody if I was a little more relaxed." CHRISTINA APPLEGATE BEATS CANCER Christina Applegate says she has a clean bill of health after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. "I'm clear," the actress tells ABC News' 'Good Morning America' in an interview airing Tuesday 19th August. "Absolutely 100 per-cent clear and clean. It did not spread. They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer." The actress' television interview was taped Monday. Christina's publicist, Ame Van Iden, announced earlier this month that Applegate was being treated for the disease after it was detected through a doctor-ordered MRI. "I was so mad," she says in the 'GMA' interview when she first heard the news. "I was just shaking and - and then also immediately, I had to go into ... `take-care-of-business-mode,' which was ... I asked them, `What do I do now? What - what is it that I do? I get a doctor, I get a surgeon, I get an oncologist? What do I do?"' The 36-year old star says she "immediately made those appointments and immediately called around for ... someone to start teaching me how to live macrobiotically." (She was referring to following a healthy diet of fish, grains, beans and vegetables, and avoiding processed foods.) Applegate, whose mother battled breast cancer, says she began getting mammograms at the age of 30. The actress is scheduled to appear on a one-hour TV special, 'Stand Up to Cancer,' to be aired on ABC, CBS and NBC in the US on September 5th to raise funds for cancer research. She's been nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the ABC show 'Samantha Who?', in which she plays a woman who wakes from a coma with no memory of who she is.
