How to Make Floating Shelves - DIY Wood Floating Shelves
This DIY Wood Floating Shelf project is a great one for anyone looking to get into woodworking and for the more advanced, alike. It basically consists of the 2×4 wood frame that screws into the studs in your wall and also the cedar picket shelf box that slides onto the frame. Take a look at the cut list in the free plans for dimensions and guidance. Sand the boards, once they’re cut to size. Start Assembly, Making the Frame First Once you have all of your pieces, we’ll make the 2×4 wood frame that’ll screw into the wall. Kreg Jig (pocket hole joinery) the short boards onto the longer board. Also screw in 3” wood screws from the opposite side, for more security. This frame will be completely hidden on the inside of the cedar shelf box, so once it’s made there is no need to finish this. You can leave it all rough. Assemble the Cedar Box Shelf Then we’ll put together the cedar box that will slide over the 2×4 frame, becoming the main shelf and the most visible part of this project. Dry fit all of the pieces to make sure your cuts were accurate, then add wood glue to the joints. Nail everything together with 1 ¼” nails and then let the glue dry. Sand, Finish, and Let Cure Sand the cedar box down to at least 220 grit with your orbital sander. The finishing process that I did for this project was the steel wool and vinegar solution/stain. Let your solution work its magic for a while and once to the desired color, seal it all up with a water-based spray polyurethane. The water-based sealer ensures that you won’t change the effect, patina, and color of the steel wool and vinegar solution. Install the 2×4 Frame and the Cedar Shelf Once the finishing process is done and everything has dried to the manufacturer’s recommended time, we can install it! We’ll first find the studs in the wall, should be about 16” apart. Then we’ll screw the 2×4 frame into the wall with 2 3” wood screws for each connection to the stud. Slide the cedar box shelf on and you’re done! *Note: If you’re wanting a more secure shelf (maybe the kids could pull the shelf off of the frame) you can simply screw the shelf onto the 2×4 frame from the underside or topside. Enjoy! You’ve done the work, now reap the benefits of your DIY Wood Floating Shelf or Shelves, in my case. Add what you want to them and share this project with your friends. Making a Cubby Shelf
We needed more storage in Claire's room. We came up with a cubby shelf of nine cubbies in a three by three grid. Each cubby holds an eleven inch fabric box. I found I could build this project with one piece of 4 by 8 plywood. I start by cutting out the pieces for the cabinet carcass. Then I glued and nailed the pieces together starting from the inside working outward. I cut a rabbet for the back, and attached the back, which gives the piece great rigidity. Next I made the top cap. This consists of a frame with a piece of plywood in the center. The function of the top cap is to hide the ends of the plywood sides. Next I made the base. This consists of a frame on four legs. The frame is mitered with biscuit joints. The four legs are turned on the lathe. I attached the base to the carcass with screws. The whole things was sanded and painted. The fabric boxes fit perfect.

Strong Floating Shelves
I'm sure there are lots of ways, many different ways to build floating shelves. There are people on YouTube who come up with creative ways to do pretty much anything and I'm sure building floating shelves is no different. I haven't looked to see what other people have done partly because I've had an idea in my own mind as to how I would do it. But I never had the reason to put my idea to the test, until now. I'm finishing a project for a customer and the last thing to do is to build floating shelves. I like the idea of doing away with shelf support brackets, but in my own mind I wondered, how do you make the shelves strong enough without the brackets to support a pretty good load. So my idea, which I'm sure is not new or particularly original, is to try to keep the weight down on all the pieces of the shelf but at same time try to give it as much strength to hold typical things that people put on shelves. So the strength of the shelf is achieved through the way it's internal structure is attached to the wall. Ideally if you hit studs with screws or bolts you're way ahead of the game. If that's not possible then attaching with fasteners that clamp to the back of the sheet rock to hold the structure in place is the next best option. The shell that goes over the structure and provides your finished look for your floating shelf also needs to be as lightweight as possible. Because in doing that you allow more weight to be placed on the shelf and not create a problem with sagging. So my idea is pretty simple and uses a 1" x 1.5" piece of pine lumber attached to the wall which has suspended off of it 1.5 x 1.5 x 8.25 inch shelf support pieces that are attached with a mortise and tennon type of glue joint. For this video I'm going to show a couple of different ways to attach these pieces and I think either one is plenty strong to do the job. I had some questions in my own mind as I was doing this as to how strong this really would be and so I did a video last week that I have linked up in the corner that is dedicated completely to checking the strength of this set up. It compares the strength of the glue joints to the strength of sheet rock with toggle bolt types of fasteners and it at least concludes that this type of installation is plenty strong for typical home use floating shelves. I have been surprised by how solid and versatile this type of installation can really be. I had the misconception that floating shelves were more of a gimmick and not particularly useful in normal use settings, but after working with my own design, I can see how these things can be incredibly strong with a little forethought and planning. One way to make up this glue joint is to use a festool domino cutter which is by far the fastest way to go. But unless you're in the construction business you're likely not going to have one of these. An equally effective way is to use a dowel. In this case I'm using a 5/8" diameter dowel and drilling through the wall support and the shelf support pieces at the same time by clamping both of them in position. Then the goal is to drill in a straight line. And that part is not necessarily that important as long as the pieces stayed clamped down well while you're drilling. Once your glue joints have set up, they are ready to install. In this case these are plaster walls so I used toggle bolt style fasteners to secure them to the wall. One of the benefits of installing the floating shelves in corners is that the support structure is significantly stronger just because it's mounted in the corner. However it also creates a challenge because corners are typically never perfectly square. So to get an accurate shape for these corner shelves, I build a template. This method can be used for not only this application but for building countertops or basically any situation where it is difficult to get an accurate shape because simply taking measurements with a tape don't pick up on subtle variations in angles that may be there. These are strips of 1/8 inch Masonite that are cut to lengths that are needed to create the shape of the shelves. Then with a hot glue gun they are stuck in place. For the upper shelf, the template was really close to being what I needed. However the angle on the corner was just a little tight on the front. So rather than building another template, I just shaved off a little of the front edge and that worked out fine. The structure of my shelves is pieces of quarter inch plywood that are wrapped with a 2 inch hardwood trim all the way around. In this case I'm using three-quarter inch alder and quarter inch alder plywood. I cut a quarter-inch deep by 3/8 inch wide joint in my hardwood edge that allows the plywood to be glued and nailed in place and then flushes out with the trim. I made my template so that it would be the size of the plywood pieces I needed to cut.

First I marked out and cut the pieces I would need for each shelf. For this cabinet there are 8. Seven actual shelves and the top. After I had the proper length cut for each one, I headed over to the table saw and ripped each piece down ¼ inch shorter than each of the sides would be to allow for the back panel later on. Using a circular saw, I cut some off the side of each board that would be the side to bring it down to the dimension I wanted. I also cut them to length on the miter saw. Once I had everything cut for the shell of the cabinet, I started the task of drilling all of the pocket holes. I laid these out with equal spacing so they would look somewhat nice when the cabinet was opened, especially since I wasn't planing on filling in the holes. After all the holes were drilled I did the most exciting part of the project. I only sanded the side opposite of the pocket holes though. It saved both time and my sanity. I also hit the front edges as well. The next step was to mark out where each shelf would go. This is fairly quick work of you measure out each shelf and then pencil your lines on with a square. Now that all the holes are drilled and the marks are drawn you can start screwing the shelves to the sides. I started out by attaching all the shelves to one side. After I had all of those attached, I moved what I had assembled, flipped it and sat it back down on the opposite side. Since both sides are marked the same, this makes it incredibly easy to line up. Next, I flipped the cabinet on its face and added a ¼ inch deep rabbet around the inside edge of each side to allow it to receive the back panels. The back panels I used were some ¼ inch thick harboard panels that I had gotten from an old building I recently helped renovate. Before nailing them down, I measured to make sure everything was square and then fastened them down with some brads. Since these did come from an old building, I sanded down the back of the panels to remove some of the coal dust that was caked into the fibers. I also made two pieces for the front of the cabinet that would set above and below the doors. To make them look a little nicer, I put chamfer on the edges. Then I glued and nailed them in place. The last thing to construct was the cabinet doors. The doors I settled on were simple and were assembled with butt joints, glue and you guessed it, more pocket screws. So they would match the top and bottom plates of the cabinet, I added the same chamfer around the outside edges of the doors, but I left the inside edges how they were. … read more about this project on our website. Simple closet shelves you can build in a weekend to get organized! | Modular shelves
In this tutorial we will walk through the process of building closet shelving. The shelves are built using plywood and pine boards. You can find the downloadable plans here: https://gumroad.com/l/closetshelving This is a weekend project and the cost to build the shelves was $278.00. I found similar closet shelves at the store and online for between $650 - $900, so building them myself saved quite a bit of money. Stealth Shelf Kit - Build your own Concealment Shelf - EASY!
HERE is the Stealth Shelf KickStarter! Check it out!!: http://kck.st/2ecdVyC Here is the concrete screw Anchors I was talking about: http://amzn.to/2eiwQIa And the extra magnets: http://amzn.to/2ebvUGf (You can use these to make more 'Keys'.) Here is a stud finder: http://amzn.to/2dFNLEE This is one of the coolest pieces of furniture that ive seen in a long time. The fact that you get to build it yourself just makes it so much cooler! I've always been a fan of hidden staircases, or secret passageways built into homes. This concealment shelf allows you to hide things in plain sight! Hide Anything! In this video I show how to take one of the 'Stealth Shelf' Kits from The King of Random, and assemble it into a working concealment shelf. Let me know if you have any questions! To mount the shelf on a wall in the USA. Make sure you find 2 studs, 16 inches a part, and screw the back wall of the shelf into each stud. You should probably use 2 or 2.5 inch screws. I go over this information at 8:16 in the video. To mount the shelf into concrete or brick, You'll need a Lead Screw Anchor. Screws wont go into concrete, but if you set an anchor first... (Which means, drilling out a hole the same size as the anchor into the concrete, and then pushing the anchor into the hole) then the anchor can grab and hold the screw and shelf in place. Check out Grants YouTube channel HERE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1zZE_kJ8rQHgLTVfobLi_g If you don't want to buy a kit, and you have some power tools laying around, try building it yourself with the original 'Stealth Shelf' from scratch video: https://youtu.be/1yvZbX_0lPw *Follow me for updates!* Instagram: http://instagram.com/zacksjerryrig Facebook: http://on.fb.me/1U4bQqv Twitter: https://twitter.com/ZacksJerryRig Snapchat: http://bit.ly/1UAb2Fq GooglePlus: https://bit.ly/1YyKice JerryRigEverything assumes no liability for property damage or injury incurred as a result of any of the information contained in this video. How to Build a Leaning Ladder Shelf (Bookshelf)
Using 1x3 select pine boards and 1x10 boards I created this simple DIY leaning ladder shelf that will spruce up any room to display your favourite nick-nacks, books or anything else. It is finished with a Varathane "Carbon Grey" stain and 1 coat of polyurethane. The joinery is screw butt joints on the top of the shelf and pocket hole joinery for the shelves. Invisible & strong Hardware /Floating Shelf with Epoxy Flame
INVISABLE STRONG Hardware /Floating Shelf with Epoxy Floating shelves with epoxy. Invisible , strong hardware for floating shelf was the reason to make this video. Strong & invisible hardware is the key to have nice looking floating shelf. This new video is a part of my " floating themed" videos. My little niece asked me " Uncle can you make me a shelf above my desk so i won't forget any books to take in school? Who can resist that.. And i did. Since i was having some health issues and didn't work much i took this opportunity and film it too. I said to my self..if she wants to have a shelf for books than she's gonna get the best shelf possible. It will be strong, floating style and with epoxy for unique messure. And i spice it a little bit and carved out some lines and mix some epoxy. Blue is her favourite color she told me and i bought some blue pigments and added special glitt to achieve that sparkling look. Overall she was super happy with it and as you can saw in video shelf was immediately used. The problem with floating shelves ia that they aren't sturdy/ strong. Usually there is a hidden bracket and is mounted to a wall with couple of sleeves and screws. Actually because of that shelves must be as light as possible because they can have hard time supporting their self. That isn't the case with this one. My simple to make solution makes floating shelves super strong. In order to have ridged sturdy shelves you have to have some support in the wall. And to achieve that is super simple. I drill 2x 16mm holes to fit 14mm sleeves , and i put sleevs in and fill it with mortar anchor. Than i assembled support together and hammer it in. Than i added screw in the centre. That screw was squeezing the shelf support square to the wall and hold it firmly till mortar has cured. After i attached shelf onto the support. I was thinking to add one tiny screw or pin just to prevent shelf to slide off etc. But it was really unnecessary. Shelf is 100 % secure. After all the forces are working down on the shelf not to the sides or from the wall out :-) I made some of this floating shelves with same hardware in the past and i know that they were strong and sturdy but i didn't actually tested one for sure. So with this one i took some fitness weights from my sister Gym and in total i put 22kg on top ( around 50 lb ). Shelf didn't sag or bowed or anything. It was still 90° to the wall. So if you will make it for yourself and if you will folow my processes I'm 100% sure that they will last and hold any reasonable stress. Mortar anchor can be bought in any store almost. Specially in stores where they sell ceramic tiles or construction materials. Mortar gets cured in around 30 mins at room temperature. ( depends on the brand). 138 - How to Build a Quick & Easy Wall Shelf
Original post on our site with additional comments: http://thewoodwhisperer.com/weekend-wall-shelf/ A simple and elegant Honduran Mahogany wall shelf that can be made in a weekend. For a SketchUp plan as well as other resources for this project, check out http://thewoodwhisperer.com/weekend-wall-shelf/ Without a doubt, this is one of those "procrastination projects". For years, Nicole has been after me to build her a little shelf near our gaming desk. She has a bunch of little collectibles that she wants to display and there's simply no storage space in that corner of the room. On a monthly basis, she would remind me of this need and even resorted to threats: "You know, Lowe's has these great shelves...." The girl certainly knows my weak points. After building the Trestle Table, it was pretty clear that I needed to bite the bullet and build my lady a nice shelf. I had so many ideas and directions I could go with the design, but in order to keep this project confined to a weekend, I needed to simplify things greatly. Frankly, that's one of my biggest challenges as a woodworker: not over-complicating things just because I can. So for this project, I let the wood do the talking and kept the lines simple and clean. No curves, no inlays.....just one species and solid construction techniques. I hope you'll join me on this one and take a crack at the Weekend Wall Shelf. DIY Seamless Rustic Floating Shelves
Video process on how I create a set of seamless, rustic-style, floating shelves with perfect miter joints. They measure 32 inches in length, are about 3 inches high and come off the wall close to 10 inches. I used cabinet-grade 1/2 pine plywood for the large surface area and solid pine for the outside trim. MDF will also work if you're just going to paint it. Small scratches were applied to the surface with a light sanding from 40 grit sandpaper for a more industrial-style appearance. I wanted a seamless look so I used perfect miter joints on the outside to hide the end-grain you would usually find using a butt joints. At the end I show a 25lb. weight being put near the back to show shear force. I don't think it would hold near the front which would be double the weight on the hanging point. Plus it's WAY more than what is needed for a few picture frames and trinkets but I like to test the limits anyways.
