How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. Make sure the vitamin supplements you take are effective for your body's needs and your unique health concerns. Warning Always consult a doctor before taking vitamin supplements. Step 1: Take creatine If you are starting or already have a weight-lifting routine, build muscles by taking a creatine supplement. Creatine is an amino acid that typically comes in flavored powders to be mixed with liquid. It increases the body's ability to produce energy rapidly, allowing you to train with more intensity and frequency. Tip Your muscle fibers will only grow if you hit the gym. Otherwise, creatine will only help you gain water weight. Step 2: Take niacin Manage your cholesterol by taking niacin supplements. Niacin can lower bad cholesterol by 5 percent, and can raise good cholesterol by 15 percent. Take 20 milligrams for general health, or 100 milligrams if you have high cholesterol. Step 3: Get enough calcium Make sure you get 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day if you're between 19 and 50 years old. If you're older than 50, up the dosage to 1,200. Calcium strengthens bones. Step 4: Take folic acid Get 200 micrograms of folic acid per day. Research has suggested that folic acid may help protect against coronary heart disease. It also helps prevent clogged arteries and improves blood flow to the brain, cutting the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Tip Folic acid has also been linked to healthier sperm. Step 5: Use glucosamine Take care of your joints with 1,500 milligrams of glucosamine per day. A natural compound found in healthy cartilage, glucosamine can reduce joint pain and stiffness and prevent the progression of osteoarthritis in the knees. Step 6: Use selenium Take advantage of the antioxidant properties of selenium. A daily dose of 200 micrograms can help prevent cellular damage from free radicals as well as help regulate thyroid function. Step 7: Use vitamin E Get up to 400 international units of vitamin E per day to help reduce the risk of certain eye diseases, heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. Vitamin E also reduces muscle damage after exercise. Did You Know? Glucosamine supplements are derived from shrimp, crab, and lobster shells.

Why Men Need Multivitamins | Dr. Jack Wolfson

Hey, it’s Dr. Jack here. I want to talk to you today about why all men with cardiovascular issues need to be on a multivitamin. As a board-certified cardiologist, I’ve seen the benefits and the value in using a multivitamin. You say you're eating a good diet. Are you on an all organic, grass-fed, Paleo diet? Eating wild seafood? In a perfect environment? You’re obviously not. Even the best foods and the best diets are deficient in certain nutrients and, because of our history, we’re deficient in certain nutrients because of the environment, the water, the air, the soil. Even the best foods are deficient and this is where our product comes in, or a high-quality multivitamin comes in. I test people's blood work on a daily basis. I look at their intra-cellular nutrients. Intracellular magnesium, potassium, copper, zinc, iron. We look for these levels and we find deficiencies in people all the time. People that are deficient in certain B vitamins, or vitamin C or A, D, E, K…on and on, we see all kinds of abnormalities. Selenium is a tremendous detoxifier. A great source of that is Brazil nuts. But even still, once again, the soil is depleted, the water, the air, all the different problems. So, that’s where a multivitamin comes in. A multivitamin is the foundation of a healthy supplements regimen. I’ve seen so many people over the years that take different products. Maybe they take a vitamin C, maybe they take a magnesium, but you need that good base and foundation. You want to find a product that contains all the nutrients you need but doesn’t have the fillers that you don’t need. So, classic things that we look for are any kind of artificial colors and flavors…that’s quite the obvious. To me, a sign of a high-quality multivitamin is something that has methylcobalamin and methylfolate, which are two more expensive versions of vitamin B9 and B12. You look for a quality, healthy serving of vitamin K, specifically as vitamin K2. That’s what keeps the calcium in the bones and out of the arteries. A quality serving of magnesium and potassium. But there are two things that I think are not necessary for men with cardiovascular disease. One would be iron. Two would be copper. Those are not necessary. People are not deficient in those. Typically, they have too much iron and copper so we don’t want to add that. Our multivitamin at The Drs. Wolfson does not contain that. With so many different brands and varieties to choose from, it's hard to know where to begin. WebMD offers simple tips to take the guesswork out of the choosing the right multivitamin for you. Why Take a Multivitamin? In a nutshell, it's wise to make sure your diet is complete with all the nutrients needed for health and wellness. Healthy eating remains the best source of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. A multivitamin is not a substitute for healthy food or a healthy lifestyle, but it can provide a nutritional back-up for a less-than-ideal diet. "If your diet eliminates whole food groups or you don't eat enough variety of foods -- you would benefit from a once-daily multivitamin," says Karen Ansel, spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans identified calcium, vitamin D, dietary fiber, and potassium as nutrients of concern for inadequate intake in adults and children. All of these nutrients, except fiber, come packaged in a multivitamin. Fiber can be obtained as a separate supplement, but it's still best to try to get all your fiber from the foods you eat. Although some evidence questions the benefit of a daily multivitamin and its ability to stave off disease, many people add them to their diet to maintain or boost health. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, more than half of U.S. adults take dietary supplements. Multivitamins are the most commonly used supplement, with 40% of men and women reporting they take a daily multivitamin. The Harvard School of Public Health suggests a once daily multivitamin with extra vitamin D for most people as a nutritional back-up. The Linus Pauling Institute's Micronutrient Information Center at Oregon State University suggests taking a multivitamin/mineral supplement with 100% of the Daily Value (DV) for most vitamins and essential minerals to maintain health. Experts may not agree about the effects of daily multivitamins. But, in bridging nutrient gaps, it's reasonable to assume that multivitamins not only support general health, but may help head off chronic conditions or other health risks. For example, a woman could take a supplement containing folic acid to help avoid some birth defects, or a supplement with calcium and vitamin D to lower her risk of osteoporosis. The risk of dietary deficiencies is greater than the risk of overdosing on a multivitamin. In this video, I cover the exact choices I make when it comes to the supplements I use to help me build muscle and stay lean year round. From the vitamins and minerals I take to the workout protein powders and formulas, everything I take in a day is covered and explained. For me, my morning starts with my essential fatty acids. I take both an omega-6 fatty acid in the form of evening primrose oil, as well as a high grade pharmaceutical omega-3 fish oil. The primrose is something I take because I tend to eat a very clean diet almost devoid of the highly processed foods that commonly are in abundance in the average diet. That combined with the fact that I carry a low body fat percentage year round, tends to make my essential omega-6’s that much more essential. I also have Reynaud’s, which is a form of impaired circulation to the hands and feet, that primrose oil has been shown to be helpful in treating. The omega-3’s are taken once in the morning, and again at lunch and at dinner. The grade of the oils is of prime importance when choosing an omega-3. Like prescription grade lovaza, Dr. C’s Omega-3’s are an incredibly potent form of essential fatty acids that have been shown to not only promote overall health and well being but also speed up muscle recovery by helping you recover from muscle inflammation. I take 1500mg of vitamin C, 1000 iu of vitamin E, CoQ10 and green tea extract to meet these needs here. As I point out in the video, I do get adequate levels of both C and E in y diet, however I still take these as an insurance policy and investment in my own health. Just be sure that you don’t take too much vitamin E as it is a fat soluble vitamin that can be taken in excess and not easily removed from the body. Green tea extract provides additional blood sugar stabilizing effects via it’s impact on insulin sensitivity and therefore finds it’s way into my daily supplement regime every morning. Each of the above vitamins are taken once with breakfast as described in the video. Next I take the ultimate insurance policy, a multivitamin. I believe again that while we tend to get the majority of our major vitamins from food, we do not necessarily address all of our micronutrient needs (especially if we tend to follow somewhat restrictive eating plans or styles) so I feel more comfortable taking a multi as a backup. One of the most important areas of late for me has been joint recovery supplementation. Having dealt with a bad right shoulder from a torn labrum, as well as two bad knees, I not only felt the need to take but actually set out and developed what I feel is the absolute most comprehensive joint recovery formula available. The Benefits of Vitamin E for Men Vitamin E is comprised of a group of fat-soluble compounds that have antioxidant properties. New research from Italy suggests that low levels of vitamin D may increase your risk of erectile dysfunction. When researchers tested 143 men with varying degrees of erectile dysfunction, they found that nearly half of them were coming up deficient in D, and only one in five had optimal levels of the nutrient. What’s more, men with severe cases of ED had vitamin D levels that were about 24 percent lower than those of men with mild forms of the condition. Insufficient levels of D may spur the production of free radicals called superoxide ions, according to study author Alessandra Barassi, M.D., and her research team. These free radicals deplete your nitric oxide, a molecule that helps your blood vessels function properly. The result: It makes it hard to, well, get hard. “Nitric oxide causes the blood vessels to relax, which increases the blood flow and causes an erection under normal circumstances,” says Larry Lipshultz, M.D., a Men’s Health urology advisor. Without the necessary amounts of nitric acid, though, your blood vessels may not relax enough to allow for an erection. If you suffer from ED, ask your doctor to check your vitamin D levels. For ED patients with low levels, the study recommends taking supplements to get back to the optimal level of 30 ng/mL or above. As for men with normal erectile functioning, Dr. Barassi says she’s currently studying whether vitamin D supplementation may act as a preventive measure to delay ED.
