Thomas DeLauer… Classic/Traditional vs Modified/Mainstream (4:1 vs 2:1) The classic keto diet consists of a ratio in grams of fat to nonfat (protein and carbs) of 4:1 and 3:1 - now popular keto diet is slightly modified and consists of ratios of 2:1 and 1:1 * 90% fats, 10% protein, less than 1% carbs* The problem with this diet for anything other than medical use is obvious: protein intake is very low, which isn’t optimal as proteins are the primary building blocks of the body. They’re used to build tissues like muscle, tendon, organ, and skin, as well as many other molecules vital to life such as hormones, enzymes, and various brain chemicals. It has been found that a ketogenic state can still be maintained with an increase in protein and a slight bump in carbs. The type of ketogenic diets popular today are generally high-protein variations of the original - Protein recommendations can vary, ranging from 20 - 30% of daily calories, but carb intake is set to 50 grams or less per day, with the rest of your calories coming from dietary fat. Ketosis and Disease Treatment: The ketogenic diet is well established as therapy for many disease states and should be considered first-line therapy in glucose transporter type 1 and pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency. The ketogenic diet appears effective in other metabolic conditions, including phosphofructokinase deficiency and glycogenosis type V (McArdle disease). It appears to function in these disorders by providing an alternative fuel source. A growing body of literature suggests the ketogenic diet may be beneficial in certain neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In these disorders, the ketogenic diet appears to be neuroprotective, promoting enhanced mitochondrial function and rescuing adenosine triphosphate production. Dietary therapy is a promising intervention for cancer, given that it may target the relative inefficiency of tumors in using ketone bodies as an alternative fuel source. Epilepsy Study: A study published in the journal The Lancet Neurology, in 2008, showed the efficacy of the ketogenic diet in children. In 145 children, aged 2 to 16 years old, who had at least daily seizures and had failed to respond to at least 2 antiepileptic drugs for 3 months, the mean percentage of baseline seizures was significantly lower in the diet group than in the control group (62% vs 137%, 75% decrease) Twenty-eight children (38%) in the diet group had greater than 50% seizure reductions compared with 4 (6%) controls, and 5 children (7%) in the diet group had greater than 90% seizure reductions compared with no controls. However, if you’re an active person consuming 1600-2000 calories a day, you want carbohydrates to be about 40% of your overall intake of calories, 30% protein, and 30% fat. These numbers can fluctuate depending on if you’re trying to burn fat, build muscle, or just stay fueled. In general, the amount of carbs you consume per day should be between 500-800 calories, which is 120-200g of carbohydrates. A lot of people today are saying carbs are bad for you. However, carbohydrates are important for energy and cellular function. They can be harmful if you overload on carbohydrates, which is what a lot of people do today. I would encourage you to start a food diary for 3-7 days and write down what you're eating on a daily basis. Then monitor your daily overall intake of fat, protein, and carbohydrates and see how your body does. Then, try adjusting these proportions based on what you’re trying to achieve. Try getting more grass-fed animal products, more fruits, more vegetables, more sprouted nuts and seeds, more coconut products, more raw fermented dairy products and overall real foods. Ketosis can occur during fasting, when you reduce the amount of carbs or calories in your diet, during pregnancy or after exercising for a long period of time. Many diets use ketosis as the means of burning fat while maintaining muscle - examples include the Atkins diet and other low-carb diets. This strategy can also lead to decreased hunger. How long does it take to kick your body into fat burning, ketosis mode? Roughly 3-4 days of consuming less than 50 carbs per day, the equivalent of 2 bananas. Benefits include weight loss, seizure prevention, cardiovascular health and type-2 diabetes help, to name a few. How does it Work? When glucose is in short supply, your liver will break down fats into ketones, which are then used throughout your body for energy. Muscles and other tissues in your body use ketones rather than glucose for energy metabolism. In a healthy person, the production of ketones for energy is the body’s natural response to starvation, so this happens when dieting, overnight and during fasting. Glucose or Ketones: Which is More Effective? Many brain diseases, such as epilepsy, are already being treated by the ketogenic diet. The mechanisms to why it helps the brain are still being studied, but there are some possible reasons that ketones seem to be a good energy source for the brain. One major Ketone, beta-hydroxybutyrate, or BHB, provides more energy per unit of oxygen than glucose, and thus may be even more efficient than glucose at providing energy to the brain. (3) -The ketogenic diet has also been found to increase the number of mitochondria in brain cells. In a 2004 study on rats, one group was fed a ketogenic diet while the other was fed a normal diet. A positive impact was found on the gene expression for mitochondrial enzymes in the hippocampus, the memory and learning center of the brain. (4) Ketosis and Body Water Composition: High fat and low carb diets are known to lead to fast weight loss. The fast weight loss is due to water weight being shed (5) -When you decrease carbs, you decrease water storage in the body. Who Can Benefit From Ketosis? If you are looking to shed some body fat, ketosis may be a good tool. This can go along with an exercise regimen as you maintain muscle while losing fat. Ketosis can also benefit those who need to boost brain power as energy may be utilized more effectively in the brain. *Be careful because those with diabetes can get too high of a level of ketones in their blood, which is very dangerous. Click Here to Subscribe: http://Bit.ly/ThomasVid Website: http://ThomasDeLauer.com Get 20% off Perfect Keto Nut Butter Here: http://www.perfectketo.com/thomas/keto-butter What Type of Workout is Best on a Low Carb or Ketogenic Diet - Thomas DeLauer *Carbohydrate content falls during exhaustive exercise and muscle fatty acid oxidation increases with a concomitant increase in blood ketone concentrations* (1,2) Anaerobic/Aerobic and Intensity Your body requires different types of fuel, depending on the intensity of the exercise - as the intensity of exercise increases, the body shifts its fuel preference from blood-borne fatty acids (and glucose) towards those of intramuscular triglycerides (IMTG) and glycogen At moderate-to-high exercise intensities (less than 75% of maximal oxygen uptake, V02max), muscle glycogen is the main source of energy provision (Egan and Agostino, 2016) (2) Ketones are burned in the mitochondria of our cells only, which means it requires oxygen - glucose also is burned in the mitochondria of our cells in the presence of oxygen, but when glucose is burned in the mitochondria, it produces more ROS (reactive oxygen species) and free radicals, resulting in damage However when a cell is working very hard, like our muscle cells when we are doing high intensity exercise, the cells need to make energy at a faster rate than the oxygen can get there, therefore when we are at a higher intensity, we can burn glucose outside of the mitochondria, without the need for oxygen - ketones cannot do this (3) Burning glucose can be both aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen). Ketones are aerobic only. High intensity exercise like the 100 yard sprint or olympic lifting, is purely anaerobic and requires glucose Low intensity exercise like a walking, jogging, elliptical, cycling, hiking, etc. can be purely aerobic (if done at a low enough intensity) The purely aerobic exercise will allow ketones to be the dominant fuel burned. When given a choice the brain, heart and muscles will choose ketones over glucose, they can only do this if both are present in the blood (3) Study - Journal ‘Cell Metabolism’ Study looked at the effects of exogenous ketone administration in 39 high performance athletes to see how the body utilises different forms of energy during exercise Each of the 39 athletes completed 3 experimental trials consisting of 1 hour of constant load cycling (high-intensity at 75%) - athletes were given a ketone ester (KE), carbohydrate (CHO) or fat (FAT) drink 15 minutes prior to the start of the exercise and 45 minutes into the 1 hour trial Athletes who ingested the KE drink, were found to display lower levels of lactate, plasma free fatty acids (FFA), glycerol and plasma glucose than those athletes that ingested the CHO or FAT drink, throughout the entire 1 hour exercise trial period Suggests that KE might have some sort of sparing effect on intramuscular glucose stores, most likely due to the suppressive effect on muscle glycolysis And suggests that ketones were oxidised as an alternative to pyruvate, reducing the reliance on glycolysis to provide acetyl-CoA needed for the TCA cycle (5) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- References 1) Ketones and Exercise – What You Need to Know. Add remaining ingredients. Add salt and pepper, to taste. Use an immersion blender to pulse mixture until well-integrated and thickened. Place mayo in a jar and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Yields ~1½ cups homemade olive oil mayonnaise. Per 1 Tbsp, yields 24 servings 87 cal | 10F | 0.2C | 0.3P 0 fiber | 0.1 sugars | 0.2 net carbs ► BEEF & BROCCOLI BOWL: Bowl: 1.5 Tbsp grass-fed butter, coconut oil or ghee 2 tsp garlic paste 1 tsp ginger paste 1 lb organic ground beef 4 cups broccoli florets 4 cups cauliflower rice Sauce: 2 Tbsp coconut aminos or soy sauce 1 Tbsp sesame oil 1/4 tsp salt & pepper 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (to taste) Toppings: ½ avocado, sliced sesame seeds 2 green onions, finely chopped anything else you prefer! Add butter, ghee, or coconut oil to a pan over medium-high heat and allow to melt. Add garlic and ginger paste. Cook until fragrant. Add beef and cook until no longer pink. Add broccoli florets and cauliflower rice. Season with salt & pepper. Mix to combine. Cook until broccoli is bright and vibrant and cooked through to your liking. Lower the heat and add your sauce ingredients. Toss to coat and season to taste. Store in the fridge, or freeze if desired! Enjoy warm, topped with avocado slices, sesame seeds, and green onions—or your favorite toppings! If meal prepping for the week, double this recipe! Yields 4 meals (~6 oz per meal). Nutrition provided for beef & broccoli bowl with cauliflower rice, excluding optional toppings. Per meal: 383 cals | 26F | 11C | 24P 4 fiber | 7 sugars | 7 net carbs ► DIY ZESTY CILANTRO LIME DRESSING: ½ jalapeno, seeded if desired 1 clove garlic 1 lime, juiced pinch of salt ½ cup cilantro 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil Add all ingredients to the jug of your blender. Without carbs, you have a zero chance of gaining muscle because you need glucose and glycogen. If it is all of these things, you can be sure it’s the best and will help you achieve your weight loss results. *#1 - Which Diet Is Best? If you’ve heard of all the different types of diet out there, like Paleo, Low-Carb, Vegan or Vegetarian, or the Caveman Diet, you want to know which one to follow. Essentially, you want to follow a diet that isn’t restrictive, if you want to follow it long term. Your diet should be balanced with all the macronutrients (Protein, Carbs, and Fat), along with vegetables. *#2 - Build 'Perfect Plates' Following on from principle #1, you should use the balanced approach of ALL the macronutrients to prepare ‘perfect plates’, which is a guide to how you should portion these. A ‘perfect plate’ is simply ¼ plate Protein, ¼ plate of Carbs, ½ plate Vegetables and a small serving of healthy fats. *#3 - The 4 x 4 Meal Timing Strategy This strategy basically means that you should have 4 meals per day, spaced 4 hours apart. This could be breakfast at 8am, Lunch at 12pm, Snack at 4pm and Dinner at 8pm. This setup helps to keep your blood sugar stable, helping to control cravings and keeps your metabolism high the whole day too. This, paired with the ‘perfect plates’ also controls your calorie intake without you needing to count calories. *#4 - Eat a low-carb breakfast This is the only small tweak to the ‘perfect plates’ principle, which is for breakfast you should eat a low-carb meal. This helps kick-start your metabolism at the beginning of the day and helps hormone levels that let you know you’re satiated. Protein and healthy fats do this much better than carbs, so you’ll feel full until your next meal. *#5 - Pick your 3 "Go-To Foods" Picking your ‘go-to’ foods is basically the easiest way to ensure consistency when following a weight loss diet plan for men over 40. This is simply picking your favorite foods within each of the macronutrient categories. For example, if you work out in the morning, do so fasted, then eat breakfast. If you train in the evening, have your dinner straight afterward. Timing your free meal for after a workout is great advice too. *#9 - Track your weight & adjust portions Tracking your weight at least twice per week is beneficial to keep an eye on how your weight loss diet plan for men is working. If you weigh yourself Thursday and Sunday, for example, you’ll be able to see trends that occur around any changes or deviations you’ve made throughout the week.
