Health Check: Fall allergies flare up
When the season transitions from summer to autumn, Minnesotans can expect things such as cooler temperatures and fall colors. But for an estimated quarter of the population, the change of season also means the arrival of allergies, and an influx of people heading to allergy specialists. "From my practice, it's probably in the realm of 100 to 200 patients per week during the peak of the season," said Dr. Tom Helm, a specialist from Allergy and Asthma Care in Maple Grove. Dr. Helm says this time of year, plants such as ragweed put out pollen, which can make life miserable for people. "Ragweed pollinates in August and September of every year, and as the level rises, people develop significant symptoms to include sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, stuffy nose, etc.," Dr. Helm said. Mold in the air is another contributing factor. Add a windy day into the mix, and you've got a recipe for even more misery. The good news is that people can buy effective over-the-counter antihistamines and nasal sprays that can provide relief. "Benadryl is the stalwart that's been around for years, but it is quite sedating," Dr. Helm said. "So the more popular medicines today include brand names such as Zyrtec, Allegra and Claritin." If you're looking to save a few dollars and buy generic versions, he says those work just as well. "But if the medicine is inadequately treating their symptoms and they're looking for some more information, then those are the people we should see," Dr. Helm said. As for when the allergy season is expected to end, doctors say that ragweed is usually gone by the first week of October, but mold will extend the allergy season until early November. Fall season stirs up allergy problems
The fall season stirs up images of colorful leaves and crisp, cool weather, but it also stirs up problems for those with allergies. Allergy sufferer Lori Aziz knows the symptoms after recently being diagnosed with allergies. "Pressure in my head like a headache, I'm stuffy, and I do a lot of coughing," said Aziz. Right now, mold allergies are in season. "There's a lot of plant debris on the ground, and it's starting to decay and molds find that as a great environment to grow in, and so anytime there's wet rain that helps the molds grow," said Dr. John Sweet of Hennepin County Medical Center's Parkside Allergy Clinic. Add in some dry, windy days to stir things up and you've got a perfect mix of allergens in the air. "Particularly this autumn with the warm weather we're having and the extra rain, it's a particularly bad mold season," said Sweet. So what do you do? Raking leaves doesn't help, but if you're working outdoors, shower immediately afterwards to rid yourself of any mold allergens that might be in your hair or on your skin. Allergy medications can help too – think antihistamines and nasal sprays. And while it's too late to start allergy shots this season, if you're already getting the shots, consider upping the frequency. "I always say consider the allergy medicines a way of treating the symptoms and allergy shots as treating the cause," said Sweet. "We can teach your body to be less allergic to these things by actually giving you tiny amounts of what you're allergic to and slowly increasing it to build the tolerance to these things." For now, there's one big advantage to colder weather ahead: a hard freeze will kill off allergy suffering. "The plants stop pollinating, and so people do feel better," said Sweet. It's also a good idea to keep windows closed at home right now to keep the mold allergens outside. Sick of raking? So are allergy sufferers
The once vibrant fall colors are now mostly past their peak, existing simply as brown piles scattered across people's lawns. As a result, Shelly Berg from Elk River-based Seasonal Images, Inc. works 12–hour days to keep up. "You saw how thick the leaves were here today," Berg said while working on a lawn in Golden Valley. "It'd take them forever to get it raked up." While that may be true, it's not the main reason homeowner Bobby Griffin hired the landscapers to take care of his yard. "I used to take care of it myself a lot, but I just would be miserable, sneeze, sneeze, sneeze," Griffin said. "And candidly, most allergy medicines have some bad effects on me, so I just have it done." He's not the only one with that mindset. "I hear it just about every homeowner," Berg said, referring to people bothered by allergies. "And people that we don't even mow for. They come up and ask, 'how can you stand being in the dust and that?'" Experts say the dust tossed up by raking and mulching isn't the only problem. The mold that's present inside these mounds of dried vegetation is another area of concern. "In the fall, the grass is damp, and mold spreads its spores," said Celia Hemmerich, a physician's assistant at the Hennepin County Medical Center Golden Valley Clinic. "And so when you start to do things like raking leaves, it really brings those spores up and people with allergies are severely affected." Health professionals recommend wearing a mask if you must rake and suffer from allergies. They also recommend changing your clothes and taking a shower as soon as you finish. Doing so will prevent spreading the mold throughout your home. Health Check takes trip to chiropractor
Dr. Phillip Detlefsen is a busy man this week, as a constant stream of people visit Great Lakes Chiropractic in Maple Grove during patient appreciation week. Tuesday, visitors received the gift of free spinal adjustments. "Chiropractic's good at helping you get out of pain, but it's even better at helping your body function properly," said Dr. Phillip Detlefsen. An adjustment to help the body function properly is something CrossFit athlete Alye DeRoma of Plymouth knows a little something about. "I come in so I can kind of do preventative chiropractic, get adjusted," DeRoma said. "He works on my shoulders to make sure I don't get injured while competing." Meanwhile, even the youngest patients can benefit from an adjustment. "Actually he has a double ear infection right now, and that's the reason that I wanted to get him adjusted today," said one woman as she held her young son. Chiropractors say that when patients come in for adjustments, the body functions better. As a result, people can see improvement in their overall health. "They might sleep better, they have better energy, they don't get sick as often," Dr. Detlefsen said. "Things like allergies can get better, asthma, even chronic-type digestive problems." The various benefits are one of the main reasons why top athletes like Alye come in once a week and, it's a routine that will continue for years to come. "Once you start seeing a chiropractor, you realize how good you feel," she said. "Even if I stopped doing competitive sports or competitive Crossfit, I'd still come in. And I think everyone that I was talking to at the gym agreed with me." Meanwhile, experts say chiropractic care isn't for everyone, such as patients with osteoporosis and nerve damage. There is also conflicting evidence questioning whether chiropractic care is an effective treatment for problems other than those related to the spine. Resveratrol is part of a group of compounds called polyphenols designed to increase life span. It is found in grape skins, red wine, raspberries, pomegranates, raw cacao, dark chocolate, and other plant-based foods. One of the greatest advantages of resveratrol is that it works as an antioxidant fighting off free radicals which causes disease and a compromised immune system. It also helps fight the aging process in your cells and skin. According to the Georgetown University Medical Center, Resveratrol may improve brain function and cognitive decline in Alzheimer patients. Due to its capabilities as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, resveratrol may play a crucial role in combating diseases including asthma, arthritis, Crohn’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and Parkinson’s disease. Resveratrol, by lowering inflammation, prevents certain enzymes from forming that promote the development of cancerous tumors. Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling "Bravo!" in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.) Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality. Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely. And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
