AHS12 Panel — Safe Starches: Are they Essential to an Ancestral Diet?

01:00:23
Safe Starches: Are they Essential to an Ancestral Diet? The Ancestral Health movement (aka paleo) has generally favored low-carb dieting with an emphasis on vegetables and sugary fruits rather than starchy tubers, roots, and grains. In 2010, however, Paul and Shou-Ching Jaminet with their Perfect Health Diet argued for an ancestral diet with more starchy plants than fruits and with a moderate carb intake; they popularized the term "safe starches" to describe starches that are low in toxins after cooking, such as white potatoes and white rice. This panel brings together Dr. Ron Rosedale, author of The Rosedale Diet; Dr. Cate Shanahan, author of Deep Nutrition; Chris Kresser, blogger at chriskresser.com and integrative medicine practitioner; and Paul Jaminet to extend a discussion initiated on Jimmy Moore's Livin' La Vida Low-Carb blog. The issues: What is healthier -- low-carb or moderate-carb? Sugary fruits or starchy tubers? Paul Jaminet, Ph.D. Paul Jaminet, Ph.D., is the author with his wife Shou-Ching of Perfect Health Diet: Four Steps to Renewed Health, Youthful Vitality, and Long Life and blogs at PerfectHealthDiet.com. A former astrophysicist and entrepreneur, Paul turned to diet to repair his own health, and now seeks to share what he's learned. Chris Kresser, M.S., L.Ac. Chris Kresser, M.S., L.Ac is a practitioner of integrative medicine and the creator of ChrisKresser.com, a popular blog and podcast challenging mainstream myths on nutrition, health and disease. He has a private practice in Berkeley, CA and consults with patients around the world via telephone and Skype. Ron Rosedale, M.D. Ron Rosedale M.D. is an internationally known expert in nutrition, aging, and metabolic medicine. His now famous lectures on insulin nearly 20 years ago foretold of its importance to the chronic diseases and aging. He has done the same for the hormone leptin with his book "The Rosedale Diet". Catherine Shanahan, M.D. Catherine Shanahan is a board certified Family Medicine physician and author of PaleoDiet for Dummies (August 2012) and the underground classic Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food. Her clinical practice in Napa, CA reunites medicine with the culinary arts in collaboration with some of the best chefs in the world. Jimmy Moore Jimmy Moore quickly became an overnight Internet sensation following his incredible triple-digit low-carb weight loss success in 2004. From his relentless work on the top-rated Livin' La Vida Low-Carb blog to the hundreds of highly-respected guests who have appeared on his podcast "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" Jimmy is a steady voice of reason in an ever-increasing sea of diet insanity.

Targeting a new therapy for Alzheimer's

03:21
An international team of researchers from UMass Medical School, the University of Bonn and the Center for Advanced European Studies and Research in Germany have shown that an immune and inflammatory process already established as a clinical target for rheumatoid arthritis plays an important role in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease, meaning drugs now used to target that process may benefit patients with Alzheimer's. This process results in the mature production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine called interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and is involved in the body's defense against infection. The finding, published in Nature, points to the possibility that drugs that disrupt the production of IL-1β, such as those for rheumatoid arthritis, may also prove beneficial for patients with Alzheimer's. http://www.umassmed.edu/news/2012/research/scientists-establish-link-between-rheumatoid-arthritis-alzheimers.aspx

If used properly to maximize their functionality, it's possible to generate quality measures that provide timely, understandable, comprehensive, clinically valid, and meaningful feedback to safety net providers and their practice teams. This information is critical for informing a quality improvement strategy and especially important when participating in a Patient-Centered Medical Home or Accountable Care Organization. Presenters include a quality improvement specialist from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement who will focus broadly on quality improvement. The other two presenters, HRSA grantees from rural and health center settings, will provide useful tips on obtaining data from EHRs, as well as using this information to drive quality improvement and implement practice changes. 5. Insurance, the Archetypal Risk Management Institution, its Opportunities and Vulnerabilities

01:13:16
Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252) In the beginning of the lecture, Professor Shiller talks about risk pooling as the fundamental concept of insurance, followed by references to moral hazard and selection bias as prominent problems of the insurance industry. In order to provide an explicit example from the insurance industry, he elaborates on the story behind American International Group (AIG), from its creation by Cornelius Vander Starr in Shanghai in 1919, to Maurice "Hank" Greenberg's time as CEO, until its bailout by the U.S. government in 2008. Subsequently, he turns toward the regulation of the insurance industry, covering state insurance guarantee funds, the role of the McCarran-Ferguson Act from 1945, as well as the impact of the Dodd-Frank bill on the insurance industry. He devotes special attention to two branches of the insurance industry--life insurance and health insurance--and emphasizes, among other aspects, the consequences of the health care overhaul in the U.S. from 2010. He discusses the example of earthquakes, with insurance in Haiti and catastrophe bonds in Mexico. At the end of the lecture, he critically reflects on the role of the insurance industry in the face of catastrophes. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction 03:53 - Chapter 2. Sleep Disorders : Doctors Chat : MD-VOD

Visit http://empowerme.tv/md-vod/ for Full Episodes, Photos and More! Today on MD-VOD, Dr. John Kennedy is joined by board-certified sleep expert, Dr. Avi Ishaaya to answer your questions on facebook and twitter about sleep disorders, including sleep apnea. Together they examine the cause of sleep apnea, who is at risk, the symptoms, how it's diagnosed and available medications, treatments and therapies. They further discuss the consequences and the realities of living with sleep apnea, including insurance coverage and related costs. Dr. Ishaaya points out that it is best to start with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise when addressing sleep apnea. Although for those with more advanced cases, many doctors recommend additional treatments as well. There are several methods to treat sleep apnea, including various surgeries and dental devices, but the most common treatment is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). CPAP is a treatment in which the patient wears a breathing mask, hooked up to a machine that delivers a constant flow of air into the nostrils. This positive pressure helps to keep the airways open so that breathing is not impaired. Periodontal Disease Educational Spot - Dr. Bradley Piotrowski

02:17
This wonderful endodontist/dentsit is located in Naples, Florida - Dr. Bradley Piotrowski. Dr. Piotrowski - Periodontal Disease Educational Segment Hi my name is Dr. Brad Piotrowski. I'm a board certified premiere periodontist serving Southwest Florida. As a doctor I spend my time focusing on and fighting against one of the root causes of all medical problems -- chronic inflammation. Usually this manifests itself in the form of gum disease called Periodontitis or Pyrea. This is an infection of the gums around the teeth that can result in bone loss and eventual tooth loss if left untreated. If you have gum disease you may experience bleeding when brushing or flossing, or a bad taste or odor, or even discomfort. It's important to note that early forms of the disease may not cause any pain. Your dentist can easily diagnose this by a dental examination and radiographs. If you do have periodontal disease it can be treated in a variety of ways like non-surgical deep cleaning and antibiotics or a surgical form of therapy. Deep cleanings do not hurt but we use local anesthetic to eliminate any pain during the treatment just to be safe. You can take steps to prevent periodontal disease at home such as brushing twice daily with an electric toothbrush, flossing once a day and using an oral disinfectant like Listerine once a day. It's also important to have your teeth cleaned and examined every 6 months. If you have periodontal disease you may have to go for more frequent cleanings every 3 or 4 months. Few of us have the willpower to eat healthy enough and to floss enough in order to keep our mouth healthy and in good shape over the course of time. We need professional help and that is what I can give you. I stay on the cutting edge of medical research and use state of the art equipment to help repair, restore and even prevent damage to your oral health. Our facility uses advanced sterilization and disinfecting techniques to give you maximum protection and minimum risk for all procedures, large and small. Remember the worst thing you can do is to just ignore the problem and risk losing your most precious gift -- that beautiful smile! Call or contact me today for more information.
