Seborrheic Keratoses - OnlineDermClinic

03:40
http://www.onlinedermclinic.com In this tutorial, Kevin St.Clair M.D., discusses the diagnosis and management of seborrheic keratoses. Watch our tutorials given by U.S. Board Certified dermatologists at Onlinedermclinic.com. Key Points *Condition consists of common harmless skin lesions that appear during adult life. *Lesions are slightly raised, skin colored or light brown spots that thicken, darken and become wart-like. *Cause is unknown, thought to be a part of the general aging process. *There are many variants Seborrhoeic or Seborrheic keratoses are very common harmless skin lesions that appear during adult life. Seborrheic keratoses may also be called basal cell papillomas, senile warts, brown warts, age spots, or wisdom spots . Seborrheic keratoses are harmless and rarely or never become malignant. They begin as slightly raised, skin colored or light brown spots. Gradually they thicken and take on a rough, warty surface. They slowly darken and may turn black. These color changes are harmless but may result in the lesion looking like a Melanoma. They appear to stick on to the skin like barnacles. Seborrhoeic keratoses appear on both covered and uncovered parts of the body. There may be one or many of them. The cause of Seborrheic keratoses is not known. The name is misleading, because they are not limited to a seborrheic distribution (scalp, mid-face, chest, upper back) as in Seborrheic dermatitis, nor are they formed from sebaceous glands as is the case with Sebaceous hyperplasia. Seborrheic keratoses are considered as part of the skin aging process. As time goes by, Seborrheic keratoses become more numerous. Some people inherit a tendency to develop a very large number of them. They are not generally caused by exposure to the sun, although they can follow sunburn or other irritating skin conditions including dermatitis. Skin cancers are sometimes difficult to tell apart from Seborrheic keratoses, so if you are concerned or unsure about any skin lesion consult your doctor. Very rarely, eruptive seborrhoeic keratoses may denote an underlying internal malignancy. The syndrome is known as the sign of Leser-Trelat. Variants of Seborrheic keratoses include maular (flat) seborrheic keratose, stucco keratoses (numerous small dry grey stuck-on lesions usually found on lower legs and feet), Dermatosis papulosa nigra (numerous brown warty bumps on face, neck and chests of dark-skinned people), irritated seborrhoeic keratosis (inflamed lesion, often red and crusted), and Lichenoid keratosis (often pink or grey colored). Differential Diagnosis (Other conditions with similar appearance) Acrochordon Arsenical Keratosis Basal cell carcinoma Bowen Disease Warts Melanoma Squamous cell carcinoma Diagnosis Key Points *Diagnosis is typically done through clinical inspection and, sometimes, Skin biopsy Diagnosis is usually easily made by physical examination. When there is uncertainty about the growth a Skin biopsy may be done to rule out other diagnoses. Treatment Key Points *Treatment is not necessary as Seborrheic keratoses are harmless. *Seborrheic keratoses can be easily removed through cryotherapy, curettage & cautery, laser surgery, and shave biopsy. Seborrheic keratoses can easily be removed but may leave a small scar. The usual reason for removing a seborrheic keratosis is cosmetic or it may Itch or rub against your clothes. Occasionally your doctor may recommend its removal because of uncertainty of the correct diagnosis. Methods used to remove Seborrhoeic keratoses include cryotherapy, curettage & cautery, laser surgery, and shave biopsy.

Targeting a new therapy for Alzheimer's

03:21
An international team of researchers from UMass Medical School, the University of Bonn and the Center for Advanced European Studies and Research in Germany have shown that an immune and inflammatory process already established as a clinical target for rheumatoid arthritis plays an important role in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease, meaning drugs now used to target that process may benefit patients with Alzheimer's. This process results in the mature production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine called interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and is involved in the body's defense against infection. The finding, published in Nature, points to the possibility that drugs that disrupt the production of IL-1β, such as those for rheumatoid arthritis, may also prove beneficial for patients with Alzheimer's. http://www.umassmed.edu/news/2012/research/scientists-establish-link-between-rheumatoid-arthritis-alzheimers.aspx

Canaloplasty FAQ: How Long Has Canaloplasty Been Around?

04:07
Dr. David D. Richardson is a Harvard-trained, board-certified Ophthalmologist in California, a multi-awarded Eye Surgeon and a recognized expert in Cataract, Glaucoma and in the highly specialized Canaloplasty procedure (new glaucoma treatment). Dr. Richardson not only performs canaloplasty, he also teaches other surgeons how to do so. ARE YOU A CANDIDATE for canaloplasty? Take our fast and free online assessment at http://bit.ly/PmJE1q ================= VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: "How long has canaloplasty been around?" That's a question I get asked quite a bit, and I understand why. Anytime there's a new procedure, the concern is, "Will it last? What's the long term safety profile?" and these are good concerns to have. Well, the interesting thing about canaloplasty is, the answer to that question is not as straightforward as one might imagined. The FDA has approved the procedure since 2008. So we do have three year results which were published in 2011 and were very encouraging. Both in terms of efficacy, which means the effectiveness of the surgery, as well as its safety profile. But the surgery itself is actually based on a surgery called viscocanalostomy that has been around since 1990. This procedure was first described by Dr. Stegman and has since become quite popular in places such as South Africa, Europe and part of the reason for that is that, it has a good track record of success itself. Seven year results are out and those results look very good with many people having a sustained reduction in their pressure of up to 30%. So if this procedure, viscocanalostomy, is so popular elsewhere, well why has it never really taken off in the US? A part of the reason for that is the technical difficulty of it. It was just simply too challenging. And the reimbursement structure that US doctors have to deal with is such that it just never quite made sense to get over the steep learning curve to go ahead and do so. Up until recently, viscocanalostomy, as well as the newer canaloplasty, did not even have a reimbursement code in the US. And without the reimbursement code it means that the insurance, Medicare included, won't pay for it. And if they won't pay for it, it's pretty much not done because very few people have the means to pay for surgery, whether it's here in the United States or elsewhere; if it's not at least paid, in part, by third party such as insurance or Medicare. Another factor is the technology. It was not until recently that iScience created the iTrack catheter that really revolutionized viscocanalostomy and turned it into the highly effective and easier to perform canaloplasty. Based on the results that I've seen, as well as the results that have been published, canaloplasty is a wonderful procedure to consider - both because of its safety profile and its effectiveness. Ultimately the real question that you need to ask yourself, if your patient is considering glaucoma surgery, is not just how long a procedure has been around but what is the safety profile and what are the results that surgeons - both individual as well as those in studies, are achieving with this surgery versus the other surgeries regardless of how long they've been around. I hope this has been helpful and the answer to one of your questions which I know, at least among my patients, I get asked quite a bit. ================= Experience Impeccable Personalized Care! Periodontal Disease Educational Spot - Dr. Bradley Piotrowski

02:17
This wonderful endodontist/dentsit is located in Naples, Florida - Dr. Bradley Piotrowski. Dr. Piotrowski - Periodontal Disease Educational Segment Hi my name is Dr. Brad Piotrowski. I'm a board certified premiere periodontist serving Southwest Florida. As a doctor I spend my time focusing on and fighting against one of the root causes of all medical problems -- chronic inflammation. Usually this manifests itself in the form of gum disease called Periodontitis or Pyrea. This is an infection of the gums around the teeth that can result in bone loss and eventual tooth loss if left untreated. If you have gum disease you may experience bleeding when brushing or flossing, or a bad taste or odor, or even discomfort. It's important to note that early forms of the disease may not cause any pain. Your dentist can easily diagnose this by a dental examination and radiographs. If you do have periodontal disease it can be treated in a variety of ways like non-surgical deep cleaning and antibiotics or a surgical form of therapy. Deep cleanings do not hurt but we use local anesthetic to eliminate any pain during the treatment just to be safe. You can take steps to prevent periodontal disease at home such as brushing twice daily with an electric toothbrush, flossing once a day and using an oral disinfectant like Listerine once a day. It's also important to have your teeth cleaned and examined every 6 months. If you have periodontal disease you may have to go for more frequent cleanings every 3 or 4 months. Few of us have the willpower to eat healthy enough and to floss enough in order to keep our mouth healthy and in good shape over the course of time. We need professional help and that is what I can give you. I stay on the cutting edge of medical research and use state of the art equipment to help repair, restore and even prevent damage to your oral health. Our facility uses advanced sterilization and disinfecting techniques to give you maximum protection and minimum risk for all procedures, large and small. Remember the worst thing you can do is to just ignore the problem and risk losing your most precious gift -- that beautiful smile! Call or contact me today for more information.
