What Happens To Your Body And Brain If You Don't Get Sleep
Sleep expert Matthew Walker breaks down the many effects of sleep deprivation on your brain and body. Following is a transcript of the video. Matthew Walker: My name is Matthew Walker, I am a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and I am the author of the book "Why We Sleep." We certainly know that a lack of sleep will actually prevent your brain from being able to initially make new memories, so it's almost as though without sleep the memory inbox of the brain shuts down and you can't commit new experiences to memory. So those new incoming informational emails are just bounced, and you end up feeling as though you're amnesiac. You can't essentially make and create those new memories. We also know that a lack of sleep will lead to an increased development of a toxic protein in the brain that is called beta amyloid and that is associated with Alzheimer's disease because it is during deep sleep at night when a sewage system within the brain actually kicks in to high gear and it starts to wash away this toxic protein, beta amyloid. So if you're not getting enough sleep each and every night, more of that Alzheimer's-related protein will build up. The more protein that builds up, the greater your risk of going on to develop dementia in later life. What are the effects of sleep deprivation on the body? Well, there are many different effects. Firstly, we know that sleep deprivation affects the reproductive system. We know that men who are sleeping just five to six hours a night have a level of testosterone which is that of someone ten years their senior. So a lack of sleep will age you by almost a decade in terms of that aspect of virility and wellness. We also know that a lack of sleep impacts your immune system. So after just one night of four to five hours of sleep, there is a 70% reduction in critical anticancer-fighting immune cells called natural killer cells. And that's the reason that we know that short sleep duration predicts your risk for developing numerous forms of cancer. And that list currently includes cancer of the bowel, cancer of the prostate, as well as cancer of the breast. In fact, the link between a lack of sleep and cancer is now so strong that recently the World Health Organization decided to classify any form of nighttime shift work as a probable carcinogen. So in other words, jobs that may induce cancer because of a disruption of your sleep rate rhythms. We also know that a lack of sleep impacts your cardiovascular system because it is during deep sleep at night that you receive this most wonderful form of effectively blood pressure medication. Your heart rate drops, your blood pressure goes down. If you're not getting sufficient sleep, you're not getting that reboot of the cardiovascular system, so your blood pressure rises. You have, if you're getting six hours of sleep or less, a 200% increased risk of having a fatal heart attack or stroke in your lifetime. There is a global experiment that is performed on 1.6 billion people twice a year and it's called daylight saving time. And we know that in the spring, when we lose one hour of sleep, we see a subsequent 24% increase in heart attacks the following day. Another question, perhaps, is what is the recycle rate of a human being? How long can we actually last without sleep before we start to see declines in your brain function or even impairments within your body? And the answer seems to be about 16 hours of wakefulness. Once you get past 16 hours of being awake, that's when we start to see mental deterioration and physiological deterioration in the body. We know that after you've been awake for 19 or 20 hours, your mental capacity is so impaired that you would be as deficient as someone who was legally drunk behind the wheel of a car. So if you were to ask me what is the recycle rate of a human being, it does seem to be about 16 hours and we need about eight hours of sleep to repair the damage of wakefulness. Wakefulness essentially is low-level brain damage. This is not a scientific test but is an analogy of what could happen and what could accumulate and what it could do to your mouth, throat and lungs not to mention how it compromises every system in your body in order to try to tell you to stop smoking and stop slowly killing yourself. The average smokers smokes a pack a day or even worse some are chainsmokers that will chainsmoke from morning to night. The effects of smoking on your body is no secret and if you don't know by now, here is another reason why you need to quit smoking. (Google) *The machine was set to smoke each cigarette at the same pace each time. * Every single cigarette was smoked. 30 packs, 20 per pack equals 600 cigarettes. . *Each cigarette was smoked 3/4 of the way to reflect real world smoking allowing a quarter of it to just burn away while talking or thinking. *It took a day to set up and another 3 days for the machine to smoke all of the cigarettes. *The results are real and actual from the cigarettes. Nothing was altered. *Between each cigarette that was smoked, the chamber was cleared of smoke. *The scenes were sped up or time lapsed to keep the video interesting and not too long. *Each cigarette that was smoked, the smoke was drawn through and past the cotton balls, through the connecting hoses, into the pump and exhausted into the air. *The smoke was not held in the glass chamber which many commenters have suggested. *The black tar goo accumulation in the hoses showed up after only 10 packs. Tar from the next 20 packs overflowed and got sucked into the pump. It eventually ruined the pump. *With actual smoking, you also blow the smoke out past all of the same organs twice which could actually be worse than this test. *Whether the machine smoked the cigarettes all at once, or bit by bit, it's the same amount of smoke, the results would be the same. *Your lungs aren't cotton balls and plastic tubes. At least with cotton balls and tubes you can swap them out. You can't buy new lungs. *Lungs do self clean. That self cleaning mechanism is supposed to take care of dust and debris from normal breathing in poor environments. They weren't meant to be overwhelmed on an hourly basis by smoke from a burning object. *The smell of the tar and cotton balls at the end was vile. I felt quite ill afterwards. Head to the farmer’s market in July and August and keep an eye out for a vegetable that resembles a cucumber, but with much bumpier skin. Choose small, firm melon. When choosing from a group of bitter melon, it’s best to go for the smaller, harder ones that are light green, as these won’t be quite as bitter. As bitter melon age and grow, they become more bitter. If you see any bitter melon with a touch of orange or yellow, get them. These tend to be milder in flavor. Store bitter melon in your refrigerator for up to 5 days. Once you’ve acquired some bitter melon and have brought them home, put them in an airtight container. Keep them stored in the vegetable drawer in your refrigerator until you’re ready to prepare, cook, and eat them. Don’t wait longer than 5 days or so, or else the bitter melon may start to spoil. Slice the melon in half lengthwise and scoop out the core. Put the bitter melon on a cutting board and carefully slice it in half down the middle. Then take a spoon and scoop out the pith and seeds. Finally, slice the melon into thin half-moon-shaped pieces. Sprinkle salt onto the melon. Lightly and uniformly sprinkle salt all over the bitter melon pieces and let the salt sit on them for about 10 minutes. This will minimize the bitter taste of the melon, making it more palatable. Heat some oil in a wok on the stove. Get a wok or large, deep saucepan and pour in 1 tablespoon (14.8 mL) of vegetable or olive oil. Place the wok on a burner and turn the burner on medium-high heat. Add chopped garlic and onion to the wok. Use a knife to finely chop one small onion and 3-4 cloves of garlic on a cutting board. Put the chopped garlic and onion into the wok and stir it with a large wooden spoon until it’s cooked and appears brown. For more flavor, chop and stir in tomatoes once the garlic and onion have browned. Add the sliced melon and stir fry for 2-3 minutes. Put 2 sliced melons into the wok and continuously stir it while it cooks. After about 2 or 3 minutes, you should notice that the melon is beginning to turn slightly translucent, which means it’s almost cooked. Beat and pour 2 eggs into the wok. After the melon has been cooking for 2-3 minutes, whisk 2 eggs and slowly pour them into the wok and over the melon pieces. Continue to stir fry until the eggs are cooked and dry. Remove the wok from heat, and season with salt. Move the wok to a cold burner and turn off the warm burner. Use your wooden spoon to scrape the food out of the wok and into a bowl. Sprinkle in some salt to taste, and serve with rice or noodles. Make a bitter melon smoothie. Use a knife to chop the bitter melon as finely as possible on a cutting board and put it into a blender or food processor. Add in some pomegranate seeds and/or chopped mango to create a nice flavor. Either blend the chopped melon and fruit into a thin liquid and drink it as a juice, or add in some yogurt to make a smoothie. Drink bitter melon tea. Oftentimes, Asian markets carry bitter melon tea in the form of tea bags. The taste is similar to green tea. Drink a cup in the morning and cup at night to get a healthy daily dose. In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity.
