The Myth of Americans Living Beyond Their Means with Robert Reich

03:58
There is a belief that Americans got into economic turmoil because of living beyond their means. Robert Reich (Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and former Labor Secretary) explains why this a myth, that most Americans do not live beyond their means and that their "means" have not kept up with the economy. Where has the wealth accumulated and why aren't the top of the top being surtaxed while average-earning and the poor shoulder the burden? https://twitter.com/RBReich http://robertreich.org/ Support The Point for FREE by doing your Amazon shopping through this link (bookmark it!) http://www.amazon.com/?tag=townsquaretyt-20
The Hoax of Entitlement Reform with Robert Reich

05:01
Conservatives are touting entitlement reform as a solution to looming deficits. But, as the title of this video suggests, this is not the route to take. Entitlement reform is a distraction. Changing social security and medicare doesn't affect the deficit, and changing the rules to raise the age for recipients only shifts the burden to the next generation of laborers. So what is the solution? What is the major drain on our budget that truly does need reform, and how can that be done? The Three Reasons Why Americans AREN'T Rising Up in Open Revolt (Robert Reich)

03:22
With income inequality rising, the middle class increasingly squeezed and more of us than ever feeling the pinch, why hasn't the American public risen up to demand reform? It's happened before, as in the Progressive Era, during the New Deal and the Great Society, so why not now? In his latest "Regulators" vlog, University of California Economics professor and former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich explains the three reasons keeping Americans from rising up in open rebellion to demand change. #NoFilter: Child Free By Choice - Deal With It!

03:13
Everyone should have children, right? Not necessarily, say members of the millennial generation, who are increasingly rethinking the notion that having children is essential to becoming a complete person. Yet there's also been a backlash, with many parents today accusing the childless of selfishness and demonstrating craven self-interest. In this week's #NoFilter segment, Ana Kasparian takes on the haters, insisting that the choice to have - or not have - children lies with individual couples alone, and busybody parents should reserve their judgmental attitudes for their poorly behaved children. #NoFilter - Treatment of the Mentally Ill in the US is a SCANDAL

03:46
In this week's #NoFilter, Ana Kasparian rants against the woeful state of mental health care in the United States. Citing the recent beating death by police (and their subsequent acquittal) of Kelly Thomas, a mentally ill homeless man, as well as the numerous killings perpetrated by mentally ill shooters and the scandalous treatment of mentally ill inmates by the South Carolina department of corrections, Kasparian paints a picture of a society that has all but abandoned people suffering with mental illness. This, she says, is something that HAS to change. Support The Point for FREE by doing your Amazon shopping through this link (bookmark it!) http://www.amazon.com/?tag=townsquaretyt-20
Rocky Anderson on the US's Imperialist History - Undermining Democracy In Guatemala, Iran and Beyond

06:21
Former Salt Lake City mayor and Justice Party presidential candidate Rocky Anderson provides a devastating history lesson, describing a few of the brutal post-World War II examples of US imperialism. In 1953 the CIA staged a coup to overthrow Mohammad Mosaddegh, the popular and democratically-elected Iranian prime minister, to keep him from nationalizing Iranian oil. Then in 1954, at the behest of the United Fruit Company (now Chiquita), the CIA overthrew popular Guatemalan president Jacobo Arbenz, leading to decades of brutality, human rights abuses and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Guatemalans. More recently, US imperialism has focused its attention on the Middle East, with the prolonged war in Afghanistan, the illegal war in Iraq and frequent drone strikes in four sovereign nations as just a few of the most prominent examples. All this from a nation that purports to support democracy and self-determination around the world. Ending the Global "Race to the Bottom"

05:32
Even as the Apple Corporation is being roundly criticized for using its Irish affiliates - some of which have no actual employees - to avoid paying billions in US taxes, American elected officials continue to call for LOWER corporate taxes to make the United States more "competitive." The cause of this seeming disconnect: a worldwide "race to the bottom" in which nations compete to attract capital investment, typically by cutting corporate tax rates, dismantling regulations and driving down wages. As a result, the power of transnational corporations continues to grow while individual nations lose their capacity to control their own markets. There is a solution, however. In this video Robert Reich (Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and former Labor Secretary) explains how large economic entities, such as the United States and the European Union, can leverage one important bargaining chip - access to their consumer markets - to curb the power of corporations and serve their citizens, rather than the profit-at-all-costs interests of global capital. https://twitter.com/RBReich http://robertreich.org/ Support The Point for FREE by doing your Amazon shopping through this link (bookmark it!) http://www.amazon.com/?tag=townsquaretyt-20

The Economic Elephant with Robert Reich

05:29
What's really wrong with the economy, and why? Unemployment is still high and job creation hasn't made a big dent this many years into the so-called recovery. Who has the best plan? Is it the Keynesians? On the other end, the Austerics? The answer is neither, really. They both neglect the economic elephant in the room - spreading wealth to the wealthy keeps buying power away from the middle class; it simply does not lead to economic recovery, historically. Perhaps looking to history can help us learn what works and what doesn't. Robert Reich (Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and former Labor Secretary) delivers a compelling argument for a 6-point plan for economic recovery. https://twitter.com/RBReich http://robertreich.org/ Support The Point for FREE by doing your Amazon shopping through this link (bookmark it!) http://www.amazon.com/?tag=townsquaretyt-20

Bring Back the Basic Bargain with Robert Reich

06:26
Throughout much of the 20th century, the American political and economic system thrived based on a fundamental bargain - that US employers would pay their workers enough to purchase the goods and services US companies produced. Meanwhile government's role was to maintain this bargain, allowing wages and living standards to rise across the board. Today, however, that bargain has been all but destroyed, and as Robert Reich (Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and former Labor Secretary) explains, the petty squabbling soon to return to Washington when Congress reconvenes will prove useless at improving the economy until this compact between workers, employers and government is restored. Breaking up the Banks with Robert Reich

Too big to fail? We all know that term was a misnomer when applied to big banks. Robert Reich explains why it's so important to break up the biggest banks, which have grown exponentially over the past few years. This idea of breaking up the banks isn't new, and is supported by Federal Reserve Governor Dan Tarullo, Former Citigroup CEO Sanford Weil, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, Senator Sherrod Brown, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Education "Reform" with David Sirota

05:45
What's really happening in education politics? Would you believe it's a battle between greedy school teachers and corporate CEOs who want what's best for the children? Well, not so much. Charter schools backed by these so-called "education reformers" aren't necessarily better than standard public education- it's actually been proven that they aren't. Charter schools do however make sense as a business strategy, allowing corporations to make big money off school children. How does this strategy work? David Sirota explains. Republicans vs. Democrats: Why So Angry? with Robert Reich

03:42
Americans are more bitterly divided along political lines today than they have been in nearly a century. While the advent of social media and the shout-fests of opinionated radio and cable TV have played a role, the greatest factor driving today's political polarization is income inequality. So says UC Berkeley Professor of Public Policy and former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, who argues that the erosion of the middle class - and the social contract that kept those in the middle from falling too far below - has led to a search for scapegoats, feeding the demagogues, the trolls and the sowers of division. #NoFilter - Why Student Loan Debt Is Destroying the Economy

04:01
The rising cost of higher education and reduced funding for public colleges and universities, combined with low wages and a weak job market for college graduates has created a perfect storm of escalating student loan debt that is crushing the millennial generation's hopes for participating in the American Dream. The results on the larger economy have been devastating, with no end in sight. Host Ana Kasparian shares her unfiltered thoughts on how this crisis has reached critical mass, and what needs to be done to set things right.
#NoFilter - Ana Kasparian: "Enough With The Materialism Already!"

03:55
Recent news stories about African-American consumers being hounded and harassed at high-end retail stores have highlighted one persistent element of racism in American society. In this week's #NoFilter segment, Ana Kasparian expands on these stories to launch a broader attack on materialism and a culture that encourages people to equate self-worth with the caliber of designer goods they own.
Assassinating US Citizens Based on NSA Metadata? What Could Go Wrong?

09:27
More controversial news came out this past week about the United States' drone program, including revelations that the US is targeting another American citizen abroad for assassination, as well as reports that targets for drone strikes are being determined by NSA metadata. In effect, this means that drone strikes may be called in on cell phones rather than individuals, which is almost certain to increase, rather than minimize, the killing of innocent bystanders. In this segment our panel discusses the legitimacy of drone strikes, the new form of warfare that doesn't risk soldiers' lives, the legal basis for targeting Americans for assassination and whether the American drone program is even effective. Lies and the Lying Liars in the Republican (and Democratic?) Party

07:13
Has the GOP leadership been lying to the party's base about the party's popularity, electability and likelihood of success in overturning Obamacare? Or are Democrats the ones being duplicitous by selling the nation a bill of goods they can't deliver on in the Affordable Care Act? The panel engages in a spirited debate on these topics and more during this combative segment on "The Point with Ana Kasparian." Why Our Democracy is Succeeding on Social Issues and Failing on Economic Issues

05:12
Right wingers who were previously opposed to gay marriage have now "evolved" and support the initiative. The same conservatives who opposed a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants are now saying they're in favor. Did logic and reason change the collective GOP Mind? No. Public opinion is what changed. How do Americans feel about cutting tax loopholes? How do they feel about Medicare and Social Security? Socially, elected officials listen to the public. But, why is it that deals over economic policy almost always compromise what Americans want? Why is any tinkering of taxes forbidden? Robert Reich (Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and former Labor Secretary) explains why money is the priority, not American favor. https://twitter.com/RBReich http://robertreich.org/ Support The Point for FREE by doing your Amazon shopping through this link (bookmark it!) http://www.amazon.com/?tag=townsquaretyt-20
