Switched at birth: DNA test results reveal 28yo man in China not related to his parents - TomoNews

06:45
CHINA — A mother in China is struggling to cope with DNA test results that have revealed the child she has raised for 28 years is not her flesh and blood. The woman, surnamed Zhang, claims as the boy grew up, many of her friends would often comment about how oddly handsome he looked compared to his father, saying he was "too good looking." In an interview with Kan Kan News, Zhang admits the boy "has big eyes and a high nose bridge" and that "his father is not very good looking." The ugly-dad complex continued to bother Zhang's husband to no end, so much so she claims it eventually led to the couple's divorce in 2004. Unable to let things go, in 2011, the man convinced them all to take a DNA test, and sure enough, the boy was not theirs, biologically speaking. Unable to accept the news, the family members took another DNA test in 2016, and the results came back the same. Zhang is now suing for 1.3 million yuan and hopes to find out what happened to her real child, while helping Wang Ye track down his real parents. In a statement released this week, the hospital says it has launched an investigation, and will accept responsibility for the mistake if it is proven that it was at fault. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Phone charger injuries: Nebraska teen’s charger-in-foot injury goes viral - TomoNews

05:04
PAPILLION, NEBRASKA — An 18 year-old girl’s viral pictures of her nasty charger-in-foot injury are teaching kids everywhere why they should always clean their rooms. Julia Pechar, 18, was watching Netflix last Tuesday inside her seriously messy bedroom when she got up to get some popcorn, and when she did, she stepped on the charger. According to the Omaha World-Herald, the high-school student then took the photos of her foot and her room. She called on her mom Mary, who pulled the charger out. The tweet accompanying the photos reads: “When your room is this messy, you have to accept the consequences of not being able to see where you step”. The photos have been retweeted some 13,000 times and have been featured in news around the globe. Pechar was treated with a tetanus shot and is on antibiotics following the injury, reported the Omaha World-Herald. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Tree man disease: Bangladesh man receives 16 surgeries to restore hands to normal - TomoNews

05:35
DHAKA, BANGLADESH — It may have taken a year and an insane number of surgeries, but this Bangladeshi man couldn’t be happier to finally have his hands and feet back. CNN reports that Abul Bajander suffers from epidermodysplasia verruciformis, a rare disease that began causing lesions to appear on his skin at age 10. The lesions worsened over time, eventually encompassing both his hands and making it difficult for him to make a living as a rickshaw driver. Bark-like growths had also started sprouting from his hands and feet, making it impossible to do anything except scratch his neck. The 27-year-old has been dubbed “Tree Man” by international media, and is one of only four people in the world to ever be diagnosed with the disease. Doctors in Dhaka offered to treat him free of charge, and moved him and his family to the hospital last February to begin the first of many groundbreaking surgeries. Sixteen operations later, doctors have removed eleven pounds of growth and restored tree man’s hands. He’ll still need a few more surgeries for beautification, but he now can at least eat, write, and hold his 3-year-old daughter on his own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Earthquake proof: Japan building made quake-safe by curtain of cables anchoring it down - TomoNews

06:33
NOMI, JAPAN — A giant curtain of special cables is the latest earthquake-proofing innovation to come out of Japan, and it combines both functionality and sleek design. With Japan's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire making it prone to earthquakes, citizens are continually finding ways to protect the country's infrastructure. CNN reports that textile company Komatsu Seiren has created threads made from thermoplastic carbon fiber composite, which are braided to form a strong yet flexible rod that's as strong as iron, but 90 percent lighter. The rods have been installed outside the company's building - draping all around the structure and essentially tethering the roof to the ground. They are also inside the building, and serve to strengthen the interior walls. When the ground shifts from side to side during an earthquake, the rods stretch and pull the structure back in the opposite direction to prevent shaking. The project is a collaboration between Komatsu and Tokyo-based architectural design firm Kengo Kuma. It will soon be used to reinforce Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, one of Japan's oldest temples. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Eyeball tattoo: Model might get eye removed after eyeball tattoo goes horribly wrong - TomoNews

05:54
ONTARIO, CANADA — A Canadian model could be losing one of her eyes after a botched procedure left it swollen and purple. The Washington Post reports that months ago, Catt Gallinger had her sclera stained by a tattoo artist who was also her then-boyfriend. The artist was horribly inexperienced. He didn't mix the ink with saline, and used a large needle instead of a small one. The injection went too deep into the eye, delivering too much undiluted purple ink in one go, and resulting in an infection. Gallinger felt intense pain shortly afterward, and began leaking purple ink from her eye. She was prescribed antibiotic eye drops, which only helped spread the infection. Soon, a clump formed around her cornea and her eyes swelled shut. Doctors were supposed to operate on the 24-year-old so they could cut out the lump, then do an amniotic tissue graft to replace lost tissue. But when Gallinger attempted to go in for surgery without sedation in November, she suffered the worst panic attack of her life. The missed operation has put her at a higher risk of eye loss, and though sedated surgery is still a possibility, she claims she's now considering eye removal. Gallinger has been open about her ordeal, and hopes it will serve as a cautionary tale to anyone wanting to get similarly risky procedures done. The Ontario government has since added a ban on cosmetic eye tattoos to avoid more cases like Gallinger's. Future motorcycles: Honda self-balancing Riding Assist tech keeps bike balanced - TomoNews

04:02
LAS VEGAS — Honda has unveiled a well-balanced piece of motorcycle tech designed to help riders stay in the saddle at low speeds. The Riding Assist concept bike has an adjustable front fork that assumes a wider angle to increase stability and its own motor attached to the front wheel, TechCrunch reported. As anyone who’s ever tried to maneuver a big bike out of a parking lot at low speed knows, keeping balance at 2 or 3 miles an hour is one of the trickiest aspects of riding. The bike was revealed earlier this week at tech tradeshow CES 2017 in Las Vegas. Although there’s no plans to bring it to market soon, the concept bike shows how Honda’s investment in robotics can have spin-off benefits for its vehicles. The technology behind the Riding Assist bike was honed in the development of both Honda’s humanoid Asimo robot and UNI-CUB scooter, according to TechCrunch. Personal robots like Asimo are likely still a decade away from being ready to be sold to consumers. However, the legacy technology from the development of Asimo and the UNI-CUB could help bring real improvements to Honda’s vehicles much sooner than that. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. You idiot! Stupid tourists' photo op damages 800-year-old stone coffin - TomoNews

07:22
SOUTHEND ON SEA, UK — An ordinary day at a museum in the UK went horribly wrong when a family's failed photo op damaged an 800-year-old coffin. According to the BBC, on August 4, a family was visiting Prittlewell Priory[e] Museum in Southend-on-Sea. Hoping to snap a morbid photo, the parents reportedly reached over an exhibit barrier to put their child inside an 800-year-old ancient sandstone coffin. In the process of picture-taking, the offending family managed to knock off a chunk of the sarcophagus[f]. The family did not say a word and fled the scene, but were caught on the museum's surveillance cameras. According to the conservator, the coffin was found on the grounds of the monk's residence in 1921 and has been displayed in the Prittlewell Priory Museum ever since. It used to contain a skeleton that the museum says could have belonged to a senior monk, so arguably, it is a valuable artifact. In response to the photo-op incident, Prittlewell Priory[g] Museum's conservator Claire Reed said the staff was "shocked and upset", but added that the damage was repairable. The museum said they did not expect people to actually get into the artifacts, and they plan to completely enclose the stone coffin in the future. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Military technology 2017: DARPA testing robot warship that can hunt enemy submarines - TomoNews

05:53
ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — The U.S. military is currently testing an autonomous sea vessel with the ability to track enemy submarines. The Sea Hunter is being trialled by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It’s designed primarily to hunt submarines equipped with quiet electric-diesel engines. The 40-meter-long vessel can travel at 31 miles per hour and has no armaments. Its design resembles a Polynesian outrigger canoe. This helps it navigate the ocean and handle challenging 6-meter-high waves. According to the Department of Defence, advanced software and hardware allow it to operate autonomously around other vessels and remain at sea for months at a time. Testing is expected to finish in 2018. If it is successful, it will be handed over to the U.S. Navy. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Eclipse eye damage: Woman gets crescent-shaped eye burn after staring at solar eclipse - TomoNews

07:21
NEW YORK CITY — A woman found out first hand how a solar eclipse fries your eyes, after coming away from the Great American Eclipse with a crescent-shaped eye burn. CNN reports that on August 21, Nia Payne had gone to her boyfriend's workplace at Staten Island to see the eclipse. She peeked at the sun with her naked eye for a few seconds before borrowing glasses from a woman nearby. The 26-year-old didn't know what eclipse glasses were supposed to look like, but claims the sun still seemed bright through the pair she had on. Hours later, she noticed her vision getting blurry, and she began seeing a weird dark spot. She lost partial vision in her left eye the next day. Doctors examining her eyes were shocked to find that the damaged area in the left retina was crescent-shaped, making it look exactly like the eclipse. They suspect that the glasses she used were either defective or fake, which allowed solar radiation to penetrate through and cause retinal damage. The condition, known as solar retinopathy, is permanent and is currently untreatable. Instead, Payne has had to retrain her vision to cope, but she'll probably have a permanent crescent-shaped void in her sight for the rest of her life. Ambulance drone: Texas company argodesign unveils done that can be used as an ambulance - TomoNews

04:28
AUSTIN, TEXAS — A Texas-based design firm has illustrated plans for an ambulance drone that can help transporting patients faster and more efficiently than regular ambulances or helicopters. The concept of ambulance drone was submitted by argodesign to Co.Design’s Body Week, which features innovative technologies mainly concerning health and related subjects. The ambulance drone is modelled after a standard quadcopter, which is roughly the size of a compact car. The drone can follow a GPS location, be remotely controlled by a pilot, or a combination of both. It can travel on autopilot, while a pilot can control the drone remotely in case of difficult takeoffs and landings. One single pilot can also control a whole fleet of ambulance drones remotely. The drone is able to travel above traffic or other obstacles on the ground, so that it can arrive at its location faster than regular ambulances. Given its relatively small size, the drone could land almost anywhere. "I wouldn’t be surprised to get emails, to hear lots of the aeronautics companies saying, ‘we are working on something like this,’" Mark Rolston, the founder of argodesign told Co.Design. "It makes perfect sense. We may have underestimated the wingspan challenge for lift, but in a greater scheme of things, that’s a trivial part of the idea." -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Surgery nightmares: dental wire from braces lodged in woman's intestines for 10 years - TomoNews

01:39
NEDLANDS, WESTERN AUSTRALIA — A woman in Australia who last wore orthodontic braces in her early twenties found herself experiencing extreme intestinal pain because of them a decade later. As reported by CNN, the woman began complaining of agonizing pains in her stomach earlier this year. When she sought treatment at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, doctors initially gave thought it was her gallbladder when the pain subsided after she took some pain medication. However, when she returned two days later still suffering, a CT scan revealed a foreign object that had punctured her small intestine in several places. The physicians initially thought the foreign object they spotted was a fish bone, but after performing surgery to have it removed, they found a 7-cm long piece of wire, likely from her braces. Doctors were surprised to find the wire, because the woman, now 30, hadn't worn braces in so long. As reported in the medical journal BMJ Case Reports this week, they believe the wire had been lying dormant in her system until it punctured her small bowel, leading to the pains. According to the journal Deutsches Ärzteblatt international, the most commonly found items swallowed by adults tend to be fish bones and chicken bones. Adults typically accidentally swallow things they try to hold in their mouths, such as bobby pins or screws. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Alien life found on Titan by NASA? Studies indicate there maybe life on Saturn's moon - TomoNews

04:07
SPACE — New research suggests that Saturn's moon Titan may contain the key elements of life. Using data from NASA's Cassini satellite, one study found that the Titan's upper atmosphere is home to carbon chain anions, reported the Smithsonian Mag. These serve as a stepping stone to more labyrinthine molecules that can develop life, reported Mic. Separately another study in found vinyl cyanide in Titan's atmosphere. Scientists speculate that this forms the the outer wall of a cell and protects the biochemistry that takes place within, reported Universe Today. Titan's atmosphere is some of the most complex observed by astronomers and these studies further bolster the idea the moon maybe home to organic life. The studies were published was published last month in The Astrophysical Journal Letters and Science Advances. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. NASA’s New Horizons space ship only 2 years away from its next target after Pluto flyby - TomoNews

07:27
SPACE — NASA’s New Horizons mission is just two years away from its next target, a small Kuiper Belt object that orbits nearly a billion miles beyond Pluto. New Horizons is scheduled to fly by 2014 MU69 on Jan. 1, 2019, making it the most distant object humans have ever explored. 2014 MU69 measures between 25 km to 45 km across. Scientists are not sure how bright the object is. Its albedo reading, the measure of how much light reflects from a surface, may be 0.04 or slightly brighter. By comparison, Pluto has an albedo reading between 0.49 to 0.66, while Mars has a reading of 0.15. New Horizons is currently speeding at a velocity of 14.32 km per second relative to the sun. It is almost halfway between Pluto and its next target, a Kuiper Belt object called 2014 MU69. New Horizons was designed to fly well past Pluto. It carries extra hydrazine fuel for a Kuiper Belt object flyby and its communications system is designed to work from far beyond Pluto. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Muscle cramps explained: What’s causing this guy’s leg to spasm horrifically? - TomoNews

06:52
EL MONTE, CALIFORNIA — A California man’s post-gym downtime turned horrifying fast, after his leg began spasming intensely. Angel Bermudez wrote on Facebook that he was sitting in his car when the painful cramps started. He went on to film the ordeal, which lasted at least 50 seconds, and put it up online, where it has since gotten at least 14 million views. Muscle cramping is a common issue with people who work out or play sports. But what exactly causes it? According to Scientific American, skeletal muscles like those in the leg and arms move in response to signals from the brain. If this process malfunctions or becomes hyperactive, it can lead to painful and prolonged contractions, otherwise known as muscle cramps. Cramps are sometimes caused by muscle strain, either by overusing a particular muscle or holding a position for too long. Other factors that may contribute to cramping are heat, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance. Experts suggest stretching both as a way to soothe cramps and as a means to prevent them. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. HIV vaccine: Experimental new vaccine targets protective HIV sugar-protein shield - TomoNews

06:22
COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND — University of Maryland and Duke University researchers have designed a new vaccine that was able to stimulate an immune response against HIV's protective shield. According to the study published in the journal Cell Chemical Biology, HIV virus cells are covered with a protective protein called GP120, which itself is covered by a sugar shield to help bolster its defenses. Some infected individuals who can keep the virus at bay without medication often have have antibodies that attack the protein. There has been little success in creating a similar vaccine, because the sugars found in the shield resemble sugars in the human body. It's also difficult to engineer antibodies that can be effective against the multiple strains of HIV, which frequently mutate. Using a synthetic chemistry method, scientists have now designed a vaccine combining a gp120 fragment and a sugar molecule, and tested it on HIV-infected rabbits. The vaccine prompted the rabbits' immune systems to produce antibodies that physically bound to gp120 found in four dominant HIV strains. It takes roughly two years to build immunity against HIV, so despite sticking to the virus, the antibodies weren't able to prevent further infection. But the vaccine's ability to induce a strong immune response in a short amount of time is encouraging, and researchers believe further studies can produce a vaccine that can ultimately neutralize the deadly virus. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Passenger’s fart forces American Airlines flight to land, aircraft evacuated - TomoNews

05:48
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA— Passengers on an American Airlines flight were all evacuated on Sunday afternoon when someone farted so hard that it made people sick. An unknown passenger reportedly passed gas and it stunk so bad that it warranted an actual deplaning. The fart apparently made passengers on the plane feel nauseated and overcome with headaches, CBS-affiliate WNCN reported. The plane quickly landed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina and passengers were let off the aircraft. Luckily, no casualties were reported from the incident. American Airlines later released a statement that said they did have an aircraft from Charlotte travelling Raleigh. The flight landed at 2:19 p.m. local time, and went out of service for an actual mechanical issue — and odor in the cabin. But it was not due to “passed gas”. Farts, flatus, or flatulence can actually make you sick. It is comprised of minor sulfur gas components — including hydrogen sulfide, and depending on the amount, it can cause headaches, nausea, skin and eye irritation. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Vertical farming: Plenty receives $200 million investment from tech giants - TomoNews

07:46
SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco startup Plenty specialized in vertical farming has secured $200 million from investors including Japanese media corporation SoftBank, the parent company of Google, Alphabet and Amazon. Plenty grows their plants vertically on the sides of a tall tower. Lights are also arranged vertically to give the plants maximum amount of exposure. The vertical farm can grow up to 350 times more produce than conventional farm in the same amount of space, using less water too, Fast Company reported. According to the BBC, the firm is planning on building indoor vertical farms with the size up to five acres, which is roughly the size of big supermarkets like Walmart. The facilities will be built next to large cities in order to reduce the amount of delivery time. "We believe that Plenty's team will remake the current food system to improve people's quality of life," Masayoshi Son, chief executive of Softbank Group said in a statement. Plenty was founded in 2013. It now has 100 employees in San Francisco and Wyoming. The firm plans to supply its vertically grown food to market this fall. The firm is not the first nor the only firm specializing in vertical farming. Other firms such as Aerofarms, Bowery and Betterlife Growers are all promoting this innovative farming technology. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. SpaceX Dragon 2 and Boeing CST-100 Starliner pushing 'new space race' for NASA - TomoNews

06:54
WASHINGTON — NASA says it may soon be able to launch astronauts from U.S. soil to the International Space Station. Important project milestones are coming up for NASA's two commercial crew partners: Boeing and SpaceX, according to AP. Several flight tests, including manned missions, are slated for 2018. Boeing is working on the CST-100 Starliner. The spacecraft is designed to send up to seven astronauts to the space station. Three Starliners are currently in production, with one planned to carry astronauts next year. SpaceX, which has flown cargo missions to the space station with its Dragon spacecraft, plans to use the Dragon 2 to send astronauts to space. The Dragon 2 is the latest version of SpaceX's Dragon capsule model, which can carry seven astronauts. Boeing and SpaceX must show that both of their systems are ready to start regular flights to the space station in order to meet NASA's requirements. SpaceX has its first test flight set for February, while Boeing's launch is planned for June. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. HIV cure? New molecule can 'kick and kill' dormant HIV cells hiding in the body - TomoNews

06:14
LOS ANGELES — Researchers may have finally found a way to eliminate the HIV reservoirs that often remain hidden in the body. Science Daily reports that HIV spreads by taking over a cell's DNA and using it to make copies of itself. Most AIDS treatments are engineered to block this replication cycle, effectively stopping the spread of the virus. But though these drugs allow patients to live longer, they do not rid the body of the virus, which hides in reservoirs and re-emerges once treatment stops. A new 'kick and kill' approach aims to get rid of these reservoirs by using a synthetic molecule called SUW133 to wake up the dormant virus, which will then be eliminated by antiretroviral therapy. The technique was developed by researchers from UCLA, Stanford, and the National Institutes of Health, and is detailed in a study published in PLOS Pathogens. When tested on HIV-infected mice that had been given antiretroviral drugs, 25 percent of the once-dormant virus cells died within 24 hours of being reactivated. With further development, researchers believe the technique could lower the viral reservoir enough for infected patients to stop antiretroviral treatment. The molecule will also need to be tested on larger animals before it can go to human trials. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Spacecraft graveyard: Point Nemo is the spot in the Pacific where satellites retire - TomoNews

04:23
POINT NEMO — Nations around the world bring down old spacecraft when possible in the most remote place on Earth called Point Nemo, Business Insider reported. Smaller satellites burn up in the atmosphere upon reentry, but larger pieces can reach Earth's surface. The spacecraft graveyard is around 1,450 nautical miles away from any land. It lies in the South Pacific in a no-man's land between Australia, New Zealand and South America, according to the BBC. This oceanic pole of inaccessibility covers an area around 580 square miles (1,500 sq km) and is home to more than 260 dead spacecraft, mostly Russian, the BBC reported. China lost control of its Tiangong-1 space station in March 2016, which is now expected to crash into the Earth by early 2018. Since the Chinese are not in control of the spacecraft, they are currently unsure where pieces of the station will make contact. Experts won't be able to make predictions until days before Tiangong-1 is expected to break up in the atmosphere. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Sand hole collapse: newlywed's body found buried at beach due to excessive hole digging - TomoNews

05:32
OCEAN CITY, MARYLAND — Digging holes in the sand is just part of a day at the beach, but for a newlywed woman on vacation, a deep hole in the dark quickly became her grave. Texas woman Ashley O'Connor, 30, was last spotted walking around on the beach sometime after 2 a.m. on July 31. The next morning around 6:30 a.m., beachgoers spotted a limp arm sticking out of the sand and reported it to authorities. After rescue crews cordoned off the area and dug up the body, it was later identified as O'Connor's. In Ocean City, posted beach regulations stipulate holes must not be dug more than knee-deep of the smallest person in the group. An Ocean City beach patrol officer told CBS News affiliate WJZ that holes dug in the sand can quickly cave in and collapse, burying unsuspecting victims because "the pressure of it is very, very difficult to get out." Currently, investigators do not suspect any foul play. It is not known who dug the hole and carelessly left it behind. WJZ reports that globally, 31 people have died from similar sand traps over the past decade. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Gun self-defense: Three teenage burglars die by Second Amendment in Oklahoma - TomoNews

07:07
BROKEN ARROW, OKLAHOMA — Three teenage burglars were forced into early retirement by a homeowner armed with an AR-15 in what police say was a case of self-defense. The getaway driver is also now facing first-degree murder charges under a state joint enterprise law. Elizabeth Rodriguez, 21, was the getaway driver when her three teenage friends broke into the house last Monday, armed with a knife and brass knuckles, Tulsa World reported. The homeowner’s son Zachary Peters, 23, encountered the boys and came out of his bedroom blasting with an AR-15 rifle. As the boys lay dying, Peters barricaded himself in his bedroom and called 911. Upon hearing shots fired, Rodriguez took off. She later turned herself in. Rodriguez admitted the gang had committed burglaries before. In fact, they had robbed the very same house earlier that day, stealing alcohol from the garage. Rodriguez said they then got greedy and returned for a bigger score. That was a fatal mistake, and cost the lives of Jake Woodruff, 16, Jacob Redfearn, 17, and Rodriguez’s boyfriend, 19-year-old Max Cook. It could also see Rodriguez spend the rest of her life in jail. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Shark begs for help: incredible footage shows shark with hook in its body nudge divers - TomoNews

05:12
JUPITER, FLORIDA — A video circulating online appears to show a shark swimming over to a group of divers, nudging them for help to remove a hook from its body. On March 22, diver Josh Eccles was going for dip in the Atlantic Ocean when a lemon shark swam up to him and gave him a nudge. These powerful sharks aren’t known to be a large threat to humans, but sharks can be unpredictable. Eccles decided to take a closer look at the shark, and when he did, he found a relatively large rusty hook lodged in the shark’s body. The creature obviously in pain, Eccles managed to get a grip on the hook, and gently pulled it out of the shark’s belly. Freed from the foreign object, the shark swam away peacefully. In the seconds that followed, the shark circled back over to the divers, allowing them a chance to check on it, while also appearing to swim around them, and even with them. Many commenting online believe it may have been a show of gratitude. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Death by caffeine: South Carolina teen died of cardiac arrest from too much caffeine - TomoNews

07:35
CHAPIN, SOUTH CAROLINA — A South Carolina teen is dead after a deadly combo of caffeinated drinks triggered a fatal issue in his normally healthy heart. NBC reports that Davis Allen Cripe collapsed in class on April 26, and died just an hour later. The 16-year-old had multiple caffeinated drinks that day, including a large diet Mountain dew, a cafe latte, and an energy drink, all of which he drank within two hours. An autopsy revealed that he died from a caffeine-induced cardiac event, which was probable arrhythmia, otherwise known as abnormal heart rhythm. According to the Mayo Clinic, a healthy adult can safely consume as much as 400 milligrams of caffeine daily, equivalent to either four cups of coffee, 10 colas, or three to five energy drinks. But for teens aged 13 to 18, the recommended daily intake is only 100 milligrams — that’s a cup of coffee, three colas, or one energy drink. Caffeine prompts the release of the stress hormone norepinephrine, too much of which can cause rapid or irregular heart rate. Not enough blood is pumped into the body as a result, thus damaging or shutting down the brain and other organs. People who have died from caffeine overdoses also experienced seizures, with some reportedly choking on their own vomit. Caffeine does have certain good benefits, and the vast majority consume it with no negative effects. But experts warn that it should be taken in moderation, especially for kids and adolescents. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Parkour fail: Man plunges 40 feet down chimney trying to film a parkour video - TomoNews

04:20
DENVER — A man fell 40 feet down a chimney of a loft building while trying to film a parkour video. Dustin Hinkle, 26, and a few friends were making the video on the rooftop of the Denver City Lofts last Friday when things went down, CBS Denver reported. Hinkle said he was running, climbing and jumping on the roof of the building when he landed on a chimney cover that gave way. “We were just trying to have some fun, and I jumped off, hung off the edge and my feet were only two feet above the other one, and I dropped down, and I dropped down, and I fell through the top of it,” Hinkle told CBS Denver. After plunging 40 feet down, a cable caught his fall, according to officials. Hinkles was stuck inside the chimney for about two hours. Firefighters entered a vacant apartment and had to rip through the brick to extract him, according to CBS Denver. After getting checked out at the hospital, Hinkle was arrested and charged with trespassing. His friends Jayce Anderson, 23 and Mary Jo McHugh, 20, were also charged with trespassing and with interference of a police officer for reportedly running from police. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Bear attack: teen wakes to find bear biting his skull and dragging him into the forest - TomoNews

06:42
WARD, COLORADO — A camp counsellor experienced arguably the worst way to wake up when he heard the crunch of a bear’s teeth scraping across his skull. On July 9 in a town northwest of Boulder, Wilderness Survival instructor Dylan, 19, was slumbering with fellow camp staff members when he suddenly he heard a “crunching” sound. It didn’t take long for him to realize the strange noise came from a black bear’s teeth piercing through his head and scraping across his skull. Feeling the bear’s breath on the back of his neck, Dylan desperately tried to gouge the animals eyeballs. The bear having bitten him twice, it then dragged Dylan roughly 10-12 feet away from the campsite, but the other camp staff members managed to help scare the bear off. Besides a few nasty scars, Dylan seems to be okay. Interviewed by KMGH, he claims he’s not afraid of the bears or of sleeping outside, and maintains we need to respect and be aware of the animals. Unprovoked attacks from black bears are quite uncommon from a behavior standpoint, but as a safety precaution, wildlife officials did track one down. According to the Denver Channel, after having Dylan take a look to confirm the 280 lbs male was likely the one who came after him, the bear was euthanized. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. British model Chloe Ayling kidnapped to be sold for prostitution, gets released - TomoNews

02:38
MILAN — A 20-year-old English woman who was drugged and held captive for six days and nearly put up for auction in the sex trade has been freed by her kidnappers Chloe Ayling, who has 161,000 followers on Instagram, had travelled to Milan for a photoshoot arranged by her agent on July 10. Ayling was to meet the photographer behind the shoot the next day, but when she arrived at the specified apartment, she was jumped by two men, and drugged. Belongings left scattered on the floor of the apartment suggest she was stripped of her clothing. Ayling was then stuffed in a suitcase, locked in the trunk of a car, and driven 120 miles to a farmhouse in Turin. Authorities believe her mouth was taped, and her wrists and ankles were tied. When Ayling finally awoke, she claims she found herself alone in a room and handcuffed to a wooden dresser, wearing only a pink jumpsuit and socks. According to The New York Times, Milan police believe her captors may have been planning to sell her on the dark web to the highest bidder. At the same time, they were reportedly demanding a ransom of $300,000 from her agent for her safe return, which was not paid. After being held captive for six days, in an unexpected twist, Ayling was driven to the British consulate in Milan, and dropped off outside. Her captor also left her with a note, detailing that she'd been spared from a life of human trafficking by members of the Black Death group, a nefarious underground network of men rumored to kidnap women and sell them as sex slaves. It is unknown whether the group is indeed real. Either way, the note claims Ayling was the beneficiary of a mistake made in targeting her, in that it was found out she is a mother to a small boy, which supposedly one of the Black Death group's firm restrictions on women they abduct for "business transactions." The following day, police picked up Lukasz Herba, 30, whom they suspect was Ayling's sole kidnapper. On his person, authorities found a pamphlet detailing the terms of the Black Death group. He has been jailed for the investigation of a suspected kidnapping for extortion purposes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. UK Elections 2017: Will Iron May come out victorious over a surging Comrade Corbyn? - TomoNews

01:37
LONDON — With the U.K. elections all set to go on Thursday, what should have been game, set and match for Theresa May and the Tories is now suddenly a bit of a race. Comrade Corbyn may have the best beard game in town, but he’s still a bit of a long shot. On the issue of security, Britain’s Bernie Bro won’t go nuclear, and that could hurt him. But what Corbyn does have going for him is May’s own numptyness. The Tories shot themselves in the foot when they proposed a dementia tax, even more when they axed it. Iron May bit into her own lead some more when she ditched support for a ban on the ivory trade. And then there was that whole fox-hunting nonsense, plus her plans to control the internet. With the latest attacks, both candidates are now talking tough on terror. Problem is, Corbyn also votes down terror laws a lot and May slashed the Bobbies’ bangers and mash. May still enjoys a lead — although it’s shrinking, and we all know that the polls are never wrong, so we might as well call it. Right? ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Silent heart attack: Study shows you can have a heart attack without realizing it - TomoNews

07:14
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA — Heart attacks may not always be defined by crushing chest pains, and can sometimes strike with little to no symptoms. The BBC reports that a heart attack, or a myocardial infarction, occurs when a clot blocks the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart, which damages or kills heart muscle cells. The most common symptom of this is pain or discomfort in the chest area. But research has found that at least 45% of attacks are 'silent', occurring with less intense symptoms, and thus undetected. Silent myocardial infarctions have been known to strike men more than women. Symptoms are often mistaken for other conditions, and include fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and pain in the neck, jaw and arm. Silent heart attacks are usually identified using an electro or echocardiogram, which detects damaged heart tissue, according to Harvard Medical School. Patients who have suffered a silent attack are at a higher risk of having a second one, or succumbing to sudden cardiac arrest. Doctors stress the importance of getting checked even if the symptoms may not seem serious. At the end of the day, it's better to be safe than sorry. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Amazon airship: Amazon patents unmanned airship to launch its delivery drones - TomoNews

07:21
ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA — Amazon has filed a patent for a self-driving airship that can store inventory and be used as a base to launch delivery drones. Amazon’s airborne fulfillment centers would hover at an altitude of 45,000 feet and be the focal point of a network of unmanned aerial vehicles. The patent for the airship was filed in 2014 but only came to light last week, when it was uncovered by Zoe Leavitt, an analyst at technology research company CB Insights, Reuters reported. The self-driving airships would carry a cargo of Amazon products and unmanned drones to deliver goods to customers. The drones could navigate horizontally to their destination and would use little to no power, according to the patent. The airships would be replenished by smaller, unmanned service vehicles, which could carry workers, drones, fuel, and inventory. One potential use of the airships could be at big events, such as concerts or football games, where they could be used to deliver souvenirs, or food. Amazon has successfully tested deliveries by drone in the UK and is waiting for federal approval to roll out the service in the United States, USA Today reported. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Loyal dog: dog protects injured dog stuck on train tracks for two days in snowy weather - TomoNews

06:50
UZHHOROD — An injured dog that was stranded on snowy train tracks near Uzhhorod in Ukraine was watched over by her loyal friend for two days until help arrived. Local resident Denis Malafeev found the two dogs, named Lucy and Panda, on Dec. 26. To protect Lucy, who was injured and could not move, Panda became defensive when they were approached by the human rescuers. Malafeev said on Facebook that Panda took care of Lucy by curling up next to her, with both of them pressing themselves against the tracks when trains passed over them. Panda reportedly never abandoned Lucy during their two days on the train tracks. The dogs were later taken to a animal protection center, where Lucy received medical attention. Thankfully, according to Malafeev, she only sustained bruises and hematomas. So it’s not clear why the dogs stayed on the tracks. The animal protection center returned the dogs to their owners after tracking them down. In a recent Facebook update, Malafeev noted that not all people would do what Panda did for Lucy. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Airplane horror stories: Air Transat plane stuck on runway for 6 hours, 911 called - TomoNews

11:52
OTTAWA, CANADA — Angry airline passengers are demanding an explanation after they were forced to stay on board a hot plane for six hours with nothing to eat or Air Transatdrink. More than 300 people were on Air Transat flight 157 from Brussels to Montreal on Monday, when it was diverted to Ottawa because of thunderstorms, the Washington Post reported. Passengers said they were not allowed to get off the plane, even when the air conditioning stopped working and they ran out of food and water. When the plane landed, the crew reportedly said they would stop to refuel for half-an-hour or so. But four hours later, and with the jet still stuck on the runway, the power went out … leaving everyone both figuratively and literally in the dark. Transat somehow managed to get the lights back on, but with no sign of an end to the sweaty situation, at least one passenger called 911. Police, paramedics and the airport's emergency response team arrived and distributed water. Six hours after it landed in Ottawa, the plane eventually took off. According to the airport, 20 flights were diverted to Ottawa because of the bad weather but it was only Transat flights that had such big issues. The airport said staff were on standby with food and water for any plane that requested them, but Transat never did. And when the airport tried to contact Transat to deplane, the airline didn't respond. Montreal-based Transat claimed in a statement that the airport was so packed that it couldn't get loading bridges to the plane to get passengers off, or refill its empty water tank. Canadian federal authorities have ordered Transat to explain just why they wouldn't let the passengers get off the plane, CTV News reported. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Artificial floating islands tested in Netherlands in order to expand liveable space - TomoNews

07:08
WAGENINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS — The Maritime Research Institute Netherlands is testing a concept of building artificial floating islands to expand the amount liveable space available for the country’s growing population. The island is made up of large floating triangles that connect to each other in a flexible fashion. It could measure 5 km wide. “As sea level rises, cities become overcrowded and more activities are carried out at sea, raising the dikes and reclaiming land from the seas are perhaps no longer an effective solution,” Olaf Waals, project manager of MARIN's floating islands told New Atlas. The floating space could be used for housing and public infrastructures and support renewable energy systems such as wind and solar energy farms. It is still unknown how the floating mega structure could withstand winds and currents and how does living on the island affect the people. Researchers admit the technological challenges to this project are enormous. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Trump supporter on plane: Woman ejected from plane for harassing Donald Trump fan - TomoNews

05:12
BALTIMORE — An old woman was escorted off a flight by police officers on Saturday after verbally abusing a Donald Trump supporter. The triggered woman began harassing fellow passenger Scott Koteskey after sitting down beside him. Koteskey got the whole thing on video and posted it to Facebook. In a Facebook post accompanying the video, Koteskey said that after sitting down the woman asked him if he was here to “cheer or protest”. He replied he was here to celebrate democracy, and that’s when the lady’s verbal tirade began. Off camera, Koteskey claims the woman said she was going to throw up right in his lap. She also reportedly said he and other Trump voters put the Donald’s finger on the nuclear button. Airline staff asked the woman and her husband to leave the flight, but she refused, so they were forced to call in some cops to get them off. Another video apparently shows the woman flipping off while the cops take her away, Fox News reported. It’s unknown why the woman became so angry, but she can be heard saying her husband’s mother recently died in the video. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Ghost photobombs: Ghost appears in Georgia teenager’s selfie after fishing trip - TomoNews

06:46
ADEL, GEORGIA — A teenage girl from Georgia got a tingle down her spine when she checked her photos from a recent fishing trip. Haley Ogletree, 13, was taking a selfie last week when she was photobombed by a ghost, according to a Facebook post by her mom, Jessica. Haley and her brother Kolton had gone fishing with their grandparents to celebrate the boy’s birthday. According to their mom, Kolton caught the biggest fish, like EVER!, so maybe the ghost was happy for him. Seems like the photobomb phantom appeared when Kolton was packing the fishing tackle box back in the trunk. Haley’s mom said her son didn’t notice anyone standing there and there were no other people around that day. So there couldn’t possibly be any other explanation for how the man appeared in the photo. Mmmm ... could there? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Cheating death: Woman miraculously survives 60-foot-fall from burning Moscow building

06:49
MOSCOW — A woman is lucky to be alive after escaping both an apartment blaze and the harrowing 60-foot drop to safety. Footage posted by Ruptly shows the fire raging through a block of flats in a high-rise Moscow apartment building. One resident desperate to escape the inferno climbed out of the window and can be seen teetering precariously on the narrow ledge outside. As the fire worsened, the woman fell backward and plunged eight storeys to the ground below. She miraculously survived the fall, but reportedly fell into a coma soon afterwards. Nine other people were reportedly evacuated from the building due to the fire, the cause of which has yet to be determined. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Burglary gone wrong: Home intruder gets an unpleasant and deadly shower surprise - TomoNews

05:45
BELFAIR, WASHINGTON — A homeowner was arrested on Saturday for sending an intruder to a dirtnap who was taking a shower in one of his homes. The homeowner, Bruce Fanning, has now been charged with a second-degree no no, Komo News reported. The man, now deceased, was identified as Nathaniel Joseph Rosa, 31, of Bothell by the Mason County coroner’s office. The homeowner owns two properties on the same street. One house that he says he he lives in and the other which he reportedly uses to run an internet-based business, according to Komo News. The house where he runs the business is where the incident took place, Mason County sheriff’s deputies said. According to police, the homeowner said he went over to the house around 8 a.m. and discovered that his front door had been kicked in. He later discovered Rosa in the shower and they exchanged some words. The homeowner then went back to house that he lives in to retrieve his firearm. He came back to introduce Rosa — who was still sans clothes — to the 2nd Amendment. The homeowner then called 911 and said that he had put a burglar down. Authorities don’t believe the homeowner gave Rosa any warnings before discharging his weapon. Police said the homeowner is cooperating with detectives. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Tiger pregnant woman: zoo tiger takes interest in woman’s baby bump, internet “Awws” - TomoNews

07:04
SOUTH BEND, INDIANA — A video showing a pregnant woman sharing a cute interaction with a female tiger at the Potawatomi Zoo has gone viral online, but the nature of the moment has sparked debate among Facebook users. In the video, separated by a wall of glass, Morgana the tiger notices mother-to-be Natasha Handshoe’s baby bump, and appears to try to snuggle against her belly. Natasha and her cousin, Brittany, seem to think the tiger is having a connection with the baby — some level of universal appreciation across species for maternity, or the recognition of life in its most vulnerable state. After the video began making the rounds online, the Potawatomi Zoo shared it as well to capitalize on the growing attention. The zoo posted the video along with the caption: “This is why the Zoo is here — to help make connections to nature!” Some Facebook users thought the video was beautiful, while many more poked fun at the pregnant woman, suggesting that were there no glass separating them, the tiger would have eaten her and her unborn child for lunch. Since originally being posted on June 17, the video has since racked up 778,000 Facebook views. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Drone beats ambulance in delivering defibrillators to people suffering heart attacks - TomoNews

05:53
TROLLHATTAN, SWEDEN — Swedish researchers have tested using drones to deliver automated external defibrillators to those suffering cardiac arrest. In many cases, patients are too far away from hospitals to seek immediate treatment, and drones could be a faster way to help them. Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden attached an AED to an eight-rotor drone. The drone has autopilot and GPS functions and is painted a fluorescent color similar to ambulances to help people visually locate it. The trial was conducted in Norrtälje, a rural area near Stockholm. The drone was able to deliver the AED in just over 5 minutes, whereas the median dispatch time for an emergency ambulance was 22 minutes, the New Scientist reported. According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests take place in the U.S. each year but only about 10 percent of patients survive. Their chances of survival reduces by 10 percent every minute without CPR and defibrillation, according to the New Scientists. “If we can decrease the time in cardiac arrest from collapse to defibrillation by a few minutes, hundreds of lives would be saved each year,” Jacob Hollenberg Hollenberg at Karolinska Institute told the New Scientist. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Life on Mars: Scientists kept isolated for 8 months in NASA-funded Mars simulation - TomoNews

08:26
MAUI, HAWAII — A team of scientists have finally returned to civilization after completing a NASA-funded isolation experiment to simulate life on Mars. NASA reports that the six-person HI-SEAS Mission V crew lived in a dome on the Mars-like landscape of Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano for eight months. The dome was equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, common area, and six individual bedrooms. Though not confined to the inside, the crew were required to don spacesuits whenever they went outside. While in the habitat, the crew conducted scientific research, equipment testing, and resource tracking. They also had to learn to prepare food using dehydrated and shelf-stable ingredients. Communications with the outside were subject to a delay of 20 minutes — the same amount of time it takes for signals to reach Mars from Earth. To better understand the psychological impacts of a long-term space mission, they were fitted with sensors that gauged their moods and monitored interactions with other members. The mission is the fifth in a series of six studies designed to help NASA select crews that can do well on an expedition to the red planet. The sixth and final HI-SEAS mission will also last for eight months and is slated to begin in January 2018. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Paper plane hits eye: Student arrested for throwing paper airplane at teacher - TomoNews

08:30
ANDREWS, SOUTH CAROLINA — A high school student in Andrews, South Carolina could face up to 30 days in jail for throwing a paper airplane that struck his science teacher in the eye. The incident occurred on January 13th, as Andrews high school science teacher Edward McIver was instructing his class. Instead of paying attention, 17-year-old David Michael Elliott made a paper airplane and threw it at McIver’s direction, South Strand News reported. Unluckily for all involved, the thing sailed directly into eye; bad timing as he was still recovering from recent ocular surgery. Elliott was called to a meeting with the vice principal and an administrator, where he confessed throwing the paper airplane, but insisted he had aimed merely for McIver’s head. But Elliott had already earned a reputation as a troublemaker and was not going to get out of this one so easily - McIver stated he intended to press charges. Elliott was charged with third-degree assault and battery and released on bond. He is due to appear in court on February 14. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Help me! Man stuck inside ATM has to slip notes through receipt slot begging for rescue - TomoNews

07:57
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — A Texas contractor found himself held captive by a cash machine and had to go old school to get out. KRIS-TV reports that the worker was changing the locks for the ATM vestibule when he was locked in because he left his swipe card in the truck. Poor fella also left his phone, so he couldn’t call for help. But, the ATM was working just fine, and what he did have was a pen and paper. He resorted to slipping notes through the receipt slot, begging people to ‘Please help. I’m stuck in here, and I don’t have my phone. Please call my boss.’ Unfortunately, everyone who got the note thought it was a bizarre joke, and the worker was stuck for two hours until someone took it seriously enough to call the cops. Even the cops didn’t think it was for real, despite hearing a little voice coming from the machine. Still, they eventually came to the man’s rescue, kicking down the door to finally get him out. Now there’s a man who’s never been so happy to get away from a cash machine.
