Body cam: murder suspect is stopped by cop, pulls out knife and begs officer to kill him - TomoNews

02:25
CINCINNATI — Intense body cam footage from a police officer in Ohio has been released of a near-deadly incident that took place along Interstate 75 on March 29. The footage captures the moment a man reportedly wanted for homicide attempts to stab a cop, gets shot by the cop, and then begs the cop to finish him off. Javier Pablo Aleman was wanted in Baltimore after allegedly stabbing and killing his roommate, 51-year-old Victor Adolfo Serrano, on March 17. The cop wearing the bodycam sure doesn’t have a clue who he’s talking to, but he seems to know something’s not quite right. When questioned, Aleman tells the officer he just got off the bus from Dayton, Ohio, and is waiting for someone to come pick him up. Aleman says he has no ID on him. When asked for a name, the shady-looking character stutters, then says his name is Carlos. Officer Josh Hilling doesn’t quite buy it, and lets him know he’s going to have to subject him to a routine pat down, to make sure he’s got no weapons on him. Unfortunately, Aleman does indeed have a weapon on him, and decides to pull out an eight-inch knife. Aleman threatens Officer Hilling with the knife, apparently not very interested in getting busted. Reacting to the weapon, Officer Hilling shoots Aleman in the abdomen, but that doesn’t stop him. Brandishing the knife, Aleman repeatedly asks the cop to kill him. Officer Hilling instead continues to plead with him, asking Aleman to please drop the blade. Though faced with an aggressive crook wielding a deadly weapon, Hilling resists pulling the trigger again, hoping to calm the man down. Hilling’s backup finally arrives, and after several minutes of heated negotiations, Aleman gives himself up and allows the officers to arrest him. The incident took place on March 29, and Aleman has been in hospital recovering from his lone gunshot wound ever since. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Chinese tourist behaving badly: woman’s rants at Chinese tourist in Thailand goes viral - TomoNews

04:40
PHUKET, THAILAND — This Beijing woman, known as “Sister Bin,” is perhaps fsat becoming the world’s favorite Chinese tourist. Why? Because she had the audacity to call out her greedy fellow Chinese tourists for trying to take home a piece of wood from Lover’s Beach in Phuket, Thailand. In the three-minute video that Sister Bin posted on her Weibo page, she described an incident in which a woman from Jiangsu tried to take a large piece of wood home from the beach, despite the fact that the tour guides had told her multiple times that she was not allowed to do so. Sister Bin told the audience that she took it upon herself to tell the tour guide to report the offending woman to customs. Sister Bin then went on cursing and swearing about how Chinese tourists often disrespect other countries’ laws and treat every place like their own homes. This made Sister Bin an instant internet celebrity, helping her amass almost 5,000 followers on Weibo and over 6,000 followers on Facebook. She also seems to be determined to continue her mission to monitor the behaviour of Chinese tourists around the world. Go Sister Bin! We support you! ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Ocean cleaning machine: Australian surfers quit jobs, invent Seabin to clean up ocean - TomoNews

01:25
PERTH, AUSTRALIA — Two Australia surfers are gaining the attention from investors around the world for their invention of a device that helps clean the ocean, according to Australia's ABC News. ABC News reports that Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski, who are best friends, became frustrated over the amount of trash that was floating in the ocean. They decided to quit their jobs to come up with a sustainable solution to the problem of ocean pollution, and invented the Seabin. The Seabin is an automated rubbish bin designed to be mounted on marina docks to help clean the water. According to the duo's company website, the Seabin, which is built from recycled materials, is mounted to a dock and connected to water pump that is powered by an source on the shore. The pump pulls water through the Seabin, thus bringing all the floating rubbish and debris in the water into a natural fibre bag inside the device before water is pumped back out. The floating debris is captured inside the Seabin, and water flows out through the bottom of the bin and pulled up into the pump on the dock. There is also an option to attach an oil and water separating device to the water pump to clean the water before it is returned to the ocean. "It essentially works as a similar concept to a skimmer box from your pool filter. But it's designed on a scale to work and essentially attract all that rubbish within a location within a marine harbour," said Seabin spokesperson Richard Talmage, as quoted by ABC News. ABC News reports that the duo designed a prototype of the bin in Perth before taking it to market in Mallorca in Spain, a marina capital of Europe. A crowdfunding effort has already raised $50,000 for commercial production of the Seabin, and a video of the device has attracted more than 10 million hits online. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Cambodia lost cities: Vast Khmer empire discovered hidden under the jungle - TomoNews

01:35
SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA — A vast network of previously undocumented medieval cities has been discovered near Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temple. Researchers using LIDAR scanning technology found multiple cities beneath the jungle, the Guardian reported. The cities had complex urban landscapes and were linked by roads and canals. They range from 900 to 1,400 years old and would have been part of the largest empire on earth in the 12th century. LIDAR is a detection system similar to radar, which uses lasers instead of radio waves. It is used with GPS to produce 3D models and maps. Last year, a helicopter mounted with LIDAR technology scanned a 734-square-mile area near Angkor Wat, according to the Guardian. The data revealed the true scale of the lost city of Mahendraparvata, which was previously believed to be much smaller. In fact, Mahendraparvata was about the same size as Cambodia’s present capital Phnom Penh. The scans show the ancient cities had sophisticated water management systems built hundred of years before it was believed the technology existed, the Guardian reported. Geometric shapes thought to be gardens were also discovered. Historians told the Guardian the groundbreaking discovery would help us understand more about Angkorian civilization and the decline of the Khmer empire. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Grizzly bear attack: Bear snaps hiker’s arm - he then walks 3 miles to his car - TomoNews

02:11
MADISON VALLEY, MONTANA — A grizzly bear attack in Bear Creek almost killed a man. Somehow, he miraculously survived, walked three miles and drove himself nearly 20 more miles to the nearest hospital. Todd Orr says he was walking along a hiking trail scouting for elk when he spotted a mother grizzly bear and her two cubs. When the mother charged at Todd, he tried hitting her with bear spray from 25 feet away, but she ran through the mist and took him to the ground. He tried to lay as motionless as possible while the bear had her way with him, biting him on the shoulders, arms and backpack. At some point she must’ve got bored and left, so Todd tried to get to his car. About 10 minutes later, the bear returned for another attack. This time, she bit him so hard on his forearm, it cracked the bone. Surprisingly, after a few more bites, the crazed sow gave pause and walked away. Stunned, Todd got up, thanked God and made a video of his account, which he later posted to Facebook. The video has accumulated more than 30 million views in less than two days. After driving himself 17 miles to the hospital, it took them eight hours to stitch Todd back together. Fortunately, he’s expected to make a full recovery. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Theme park accident: Father and son severely burned on hot metal slide ride in Utah - TomoNews

01:45
PARK CITY, UTAH — A family’s summer vacation went horribly awry after a day at the theme park turned into a hellish nightmare. Kenny Edwards and his son suffered severe burns while on a slide at Utah’s Olympic Park, and believe the park’s management is not giving riders enough warning about the slide’s dangers, according to a Facebook page the family set up about their ordeal. On July 3, Edwards and his 4-year-old son were going down the Alpine slide when the sled they were on stopped at a turn and sent them tumbling onto the hot metal. Edwards grabbed the edge of the hot slide and managed to maneuver his son into his lap, but didn’t realize the severity of his burns until the boy pointed them out to him. The skin on his hands had peeled off, and the flesh underneath was red and raw. Edwards got off the slide and flagged down another rider to help bring his son down, reports KUTV. The kind stranger delivered the severely injured boy to his waiting mother. The Texas father of two eventually made it down the slide on the defective sled, with third-degree burns all over his body. The hot metal cooked parts of his leg, elbow and almost 90 percent of his backside. Riders are told beforehand not to touch the hot slide, but aren’t informed that doing so could result in severe injuries. The family is now seeking to get the park to give more explicit warnings about the slide, especially as visitors are required to sign waivers assuming responsibility for any injury or death. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Laser propulsion: NASA's laser-powered spacecraft will fly to Mars in 72 hours - TomoNews

01:41
SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA — NASA scientist Philip Lubin is working on perfecting laser technology that could propel a light spacecraft to Mars in as little as three days. In order for spacecraft to achieve faster speeds, Lubin proposes using an electromagnetic propulsion system that uses light and radiation, rather than the current fuel-based rocket propulsion system. Photonic propulsion is a theoretical system that uses the energy and momentum from photons to move objects through space. According to Wired, when photons from a laser array reflect off an object, their energy is translated into a push that's capable of moving objects like a spacecraft. The system would currently work best with robotic spacecraft. According to Lubin, a robotic probe with a thin reflective sail could travel to Mars in three days. On the other hand, a manned shuttle could reach Mars in a month using the laser-based system. He estimates that lasers could accelerate spacecraft to 30 percent the speed of light, which was previously unheard of. Using photonic propulsion, interstellar travel may be possible and sending a probe to Earth's closest star, Alpha Centauri, could take as little as 15 years, reported Space.com. In comparison, our current technology takes four to eight months to get to Mars. It took 37 years for the Voyager 1 spacecraft to reach the edge of our solar system. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Smart Floating Farm: Forward Thinking Architecture’s invention could help feed the world - TomoNews

02:02
BARCELONA, SPAIN — A Barcelona-based company has developed a solar powered floating farm system that could ease growing food demand around the world. Smart Floating Farms, otherwise known as SFF, was developed by Forward Thinking Architecture. The idea was inspired by traditional grid-shape fish farms in Asia. The structure is 200 meters wide and 350 meters long, which is roughly the size of 6 football fields. They can be connected to form a cluster of modules. The floating farm has three levels: the top level is installed with photovoltaic panels to harvest sunlight for electricity and it has rainwater collectors for irrigation purposes; second level serves as a greenhouse for the vegetables, which are grown without soil under the hydroponic system; and the ground level is used as a fish farm on the open sea, as well as a fish egg hatchery, a slaughterhouse and a storage room for the fish. All the modules are centrally controlled by software via Cloud technology. The production data will be analysed and can be used to make comparisons on food needs for specific cities. Each SFF is estimated to have a maximum production of 8.152 tons of vegetables and 1.703 tons of fish per year. The floating farms are ideal for densely populated cities near coastal areas such as Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Road rage incident turns into fist fight in Walmart parking lot - TomoNews

15:09
DENVER — Video footage captured a road rage confrontation that led to a fist fight outside a Walmart in Colorado on June 17. Devin Jones was reportedly riding his motorcycle through a neighborhood in Denver, when he noticed a white sedan speed by him. Jones decided to pursue the sedan, which sped through the streets, zipping around other vehicles and on wrong side of the road. Jones captured the entire incident on his helmet camera, writing that he wanted to follow the guy just to see his face. But, when the sedan’s driver outmaneuvered and out-crazied Jones, the motorcyclist abandoned his chase … or so he thought. After giving up, Jones decided to test out some tires in a dirt lot, and noticed the same speed devil pass by. He followed the vehicle into a Walmart parking lot. Jones confronted the driver, who had a female passenger in the vehicle, asking him why he was in such a hurry, to which the driver explained, “Yo momma f***ed me good.” After the two spent a few minutes exchanging insults, the driver began touching Jones’ motorcycle. When Jones asked him not to, the driver makes a point to touch the bike again. That’s when Jones made his own point by shoving the driver away. The two spar for a few minutes, with Jones getting in a few good punches and shoves before Walmart officials and passersby interrupt. “I should have left it alone but instead I confronted him and let anger make me look like a complete asshole,” Jones wrote about the incident. “I thought it was common knowledge not to hit a motorcycle in front of its lover... owner.” ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Typhoon turbine: Japanese engineer develops wind turbine to harness power from typhoon - TomoNews

01:45
TOKYO — A Japanese engineer has designed a new type of wind turbine that he believes would be able to harness power from typhoons. Atsushi Shimizu founded a tech company called Challenergy in 2013 and invented a wind turbine that not only can draw power from the force of wind, but can stay functional during typhoons. The typhoon turbine consists of three vertical blades and a central rod. It has an omnidirectional axis so that it can respond to wind coming from every direction. Instead of driven by a propeller, the turbine makes use of the principle of the Magnus effect: air curves when passing by a rotating object, and the downward deflection of the air-flow produces a lifting force that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the object to remain airborne. The blades are controlled by the central rod, which can be tightened to slow down, or stop the blades regardless of the external forces. Under normal circumstances, the typhoon turbine can achieve about 30 percent efficiency while conventional wind turbine can achieve 40 percent, ScienceAlert reported. However, conventional wind turbines could be damaged by typhoons while the typhoon turbine would be able to function normally. "Japan actually has a lot more wind power than it does solar power, it's just not utilized," Shimizu told CNN. "Japan has the potential to be a super power of wind.” According to the Japan Guide, about seven or eight typhoons pass over Okinawa prefecture each year, with about three hitting its main islands. Shimizu believes a single typhoon could generate enough energy to power Japan for 50 years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Future green technology: new solar panels could generate electricity from raindrops - TomoNews

01:28
YUNNAN, CHINA — Scientists in China are producing solar panels that can produce energy from the last source you'd expect — rainwater. In a study published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, researchers in China introduced a new type of solar panel that adds a layer of graphene, or carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure, to dye-sensitized solar cells. A flexible layer of indium tin oxide and plastic is included underneath. Graphene has unusual properties that allow electrons to move freely throughout the entire layer. According to the researchers, rainwater contains positively charged ions like ammonium, calcium and sodium. When water binds to the panel's surface, a double-layer of positive ions and negatively charged electrons is created, which ends up producing a voltage and current. Tests of the new solar panels have been able to produce hundreds of microvolts, which is small even compared to a standard AA battery, reports Quartz. The solar-to-electric energy conversion stood at about 7 percent, which is much lower than the 20 percent energy conversion achieved by the best solar panels on the market. So there's a long way to go before the new solar panels become more widely used. But more efficient future versions could mean big things for the solar industry. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. ATM skimming: How to spot an ATM skimmer - TomoNews

01:35
NEW YORK — This animation explains the practice of automatic teller machine (ATM) skimming, a common form of fraud that involves a compromised ATM that allows criminals to access bank accounts. According a survey published in April 2016, such incidents increased 546% from 2014 to 2015 in the United States. The data came from financial analytics company FICO and FICO Card Alert Service software, which also states that 60% of the incidents took place at non-bank ATMs. ATM skimming usually employs two separate components. First, a fake card reader is fitted onto the ATM’s card slot. It scans and stores the information on the card’s magnetic strip as it slides through. Then, a pinhole camera hidden on or near the ATM records the PIN entered on the keypad. Alternatively, a fake keypad is placed on top of the real one to record the digits entered. To avoid becoming victim to skimming fraud, one must check for any objects mounted on the ATM or near it. Comparing the ATM being used to another nearby can help spot suspicious differences. Examine any mounted parts by pulling them to see whether they are securely attached. Feel the keypad for its sensitivity and check whether it was placed on top of a real one. The research also reports that 60% of incidents took place at non-bank ATMs. You might want to avoid using ATMs in malls, for instance, and stick with those located outside or inside your bank. According to PCMag, one should examine any mounted parts by pulling them to see if they are securely attached. Also, try to feel the keypad for its sensitivity and check if it was placed on top of a real one. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Florida sinkhole reveals that we've been wrong about when the first Americans arrived - TomoNews

02:04
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA — A collection of fossils and artifacts retrieved from a sinkhole in a river on Florida's Gulf Coast may provide some of the oldest evidence of human presence in North America. The Page-Ladson archaeological site, submerged 35 feet under Florida's Aucilla River, was the site of several digs in the 1980s and 1990s. A new team that included researchers from Florida State University and Texas A&M University decided to follow up on decades-old research between 2012 and 2014. After more than a hundred dives into the sinkhole, the team published their findings last week in the journal Science Advances. The researchers discovered mastodon bones, fossilized dung and stone tools in the sinkhole that provide compelling evidence that humans spread across North America far earlier than archaeologists previously thought. According to their research paper, the stone tools recovered from the sinkhole include a biface, a stone that's been manually sharpened on both ends. On a previous excavation at the site, archaeologists found an adult mastodon tusk that appeared to have human-made grooves along its surface, reported the Christian Science Monitor. Prehistoric humans called the Clovis culture were believed to have originally arrived in North America via a land bridge about 13,000 years ago — as mammoth bones and spearheads have revealed. However, according to the Guardian, some of the artifacts recently discovered within the Aucilla River date back to more than 14,550 years ago when the land bridge may not have existed. What these new discoveries suggest is that a land bridge from Siberia may not be the answer to how the first humans initially colonized North America. Moreover, evidence suggests that people were in North America before the Clovis. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Space elevator would climb incredible 20-kilometer tower in ambitious Canadian plan

01:42
PEMBROKE, ONTARIO, CANADA — A Canadian space company wants to build a space elevator that reaches 20 kilometers high. The company is called Thoth and the concept is called the Thoth X tower. The idea is to build a tower with reinforced inflatable sections. The middle is hollow. An elevator car would encircle the tower until it reaches the top. Thoth estimates the tower would cost $5 billion to construct. As a demonstration project, it would build a precursor tower measuring 1.5 kilometers tall. One feature of the project is the wind farm about three quarters of the way up. The 50 turbines could produce 1 gigawatt of continuous energy. That’s enough to power about 700,000 homes. The main purpose of the tower is to provide a take-off and landing platform for spacecraft. If your aircraft takes off at a 20 kilometer altitude, you can get to space in a single stage without the need for additional fuel stages. Thoth estimates this would save 30% on energy costs. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Wife crushes man’s testicles: Man dies after 5 minutes of ball-crushing agony - TomoNews

01:15
TIEN GIANG, VIETNAM — A Vietnamese man died of suffocation after an altercation with his wife during which she reportedly crushed his testicles. On July 10, Le Kim Khai came to the home of his separated wife, 55-year-old Phan Thi Kim Chuong, to find her and one of their two daughters refusing to let him in. Khai found a hand saw and used it to cut open the door lock and break in. Once inside the husband and wife began violently fighting. Khai began punching his wife repeatedly despite his daughter’s pleas for him to stop. Chuong eventually grabbed Khai’s testicles and wrestled him to the floor, climbing and sitting on his stomach. Never loosening her vice grip, Chuong called the police. For five minutes, Chuong crushed the man’s balls until neighbors arrived and convinced her to stop. It was too late; Khai had lost consciousness and when en route to the hospital his face had turned purple. An autopsy revealed food stuck in the man’s windpipe. His official cause of death was suffocation. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Grandma Wanda texts wrong number about Thanksgiving dinner and invites stranger anyway - TomoNews

01:42
PHOENIX, ARIZONA — As has happened to so many of us, 17-year-old Jamal Hinton was receiving text messages from a wrong number, but rather than just move on, he decided to make a connection instead, with the sweet grandmother who mis-dialed him. Earlier this week, Jamal found himself looped into a group chat, getting texts from an unknown number about Thanksgiving dinner. When he asked who it was, the person replied “Your grandma.” When he asked for a picture, the woman sent him a selfie of her, while she was at work. Jamal quickly realized it wasn’t his grandma, but decided to have some fun with the mix up, and sent her a selfie, too. He then took things a step further, boldly asking if he could still have a plate at her family Thanksgiving meal. In classic grandma style, she replied “Of course you can. That’s what grandma’s do … feed everyone.” The woman, Grandma Wanda, was actually trying to reach her grandson, Brandon. What ended up happened was Brandon, his girlfriend and Grandma Wanda having a conversation with Jamal about actually have him over for Thanksgiving dinner at their Arizona home. Jamal’s easily the coolest tag-along guest this year. Unfortunately for Grandma Wanda, when screenshots of the exchange began circulating on Twitter, her phone started blowing up with random requests for seats at the table, so she had to have her number changed. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Plane lands in wrong country: AirAsia X flight to KL lands in Melbourne after nav error - TomoNews

01:43
SYDNEY — An Australian aviation investigation report has revealed how an AirAsia X flight bound for Malaysia last year accidentally flew to Melbourne instead of its Asian hub after a navigational error. The AirAsia X Airbus A330 was scheduled to fly from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur. Australian authorities say the plane’s captain manually copied the gate coordinates displayed on a sign outside the cockpit window into the flight management guidance system. As he accidentally omitted a zero, the system located the plane near Cape Town, South Africa. Both the captain and the first officer heard several chimes as they prepared for takeoff. They chose to ignore the alerts because there were no other abnormal indications. Immediately after takeoff, an audible alert sounded, warning of terrain in the plane’s flightpath. Not seeing any obstacles, the pilots ignored the warning. The plane had already deviated from its supposed departure flight path and crossed the paths of other aircraft. An airport traffic control officer noticed the deviation and contacted the pilots. Only then did they realize the GPS error on their navigation display. The pilots requested permission to abort the flight and return to Sydney airport, but were unable to turn back due to deteriorating weather. The captain then accepted the alternative route to Melbourne and manually flew the plane to the new destination. AirAsia X told CNN that all of its aircraft have since been equipped with upgraded flight management systems to avoid repeating a similar mistake. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Cryonics gives the terminally ill hope of a second chance at life - TomoNews

02:25
CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN — A landmark British court ruling that a 14-year-old girl who died of cancer should have her body cryogenically frozen has once again put the spotlight on the controversial process known as cryonics. Britain’s High Court ruled in October that the girl had the right to be cryogenically frozen after her parents disagreed about whether she should undergo the process, the Telegraph reported. Cryonics is a procedure that preserves the human body at low temperatures after death in the hope it can be revived in the future. The process must begin within two minutes of a person being declared legally dead. Although the heart has stopped beating, there is still some brain function during this period, so a heart-lung resuscitator is used to stabilize the body and keep the brain supplied with blood and oxygen. An anticoagulant is injected into the body to stop the blood clotting during transit. The body is then packed in ice and transported to a cryonics facility. Once there, a process called vitrification begins, where the blood is replaced with a cryoprotectant antifreeze fluid. This is done to prevent the cells from freezing and to stop ice crystals from forming around the organs at extremely low temperatures. The body is then placed on a bed of dry ice until it cools to -130 degrees Celsius. Once cooled sufficiently, the body is transferred to an individual container, which is in turn lowered into a larger metal tank that’s filled with liquid nitrogen to keep the temperature at -196 degrees Celsius. Between four and six bodies are typically held in the tanks. Bodies are stored with the heads facing down to ensure the brain stays immersed in freezing liquid even in the event of a leak in the container. Approval to build a cryonics center in Australia was granted in late November. Russia is currently the only country outside the United States to host cryonics facilities. Around 350 people have been cryogenically frozen since the 1960s, including several notable scientists and the baseball legend Ted Williams, according to the Telegraph. However, the technology to revive someone who has been cryogenically frozen does not exist and there is no proof that it ever will. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Solar panel windows: coating of quantum dots on windows harvest energy from the sun - TomoNews

01:37
LOS ALAMOS, NEW MEXICO — Researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico have developed a film of quantum dots that can turn windows into photovoltaic systems. Quantum dots can be used as semiconductors. According to IEEE Spectrum, they consist of a CdSe inner core, a Cd1−xZnxS outer shell and a silica coating that prevents them from oxidation. The quantum dots are spead into a thin sheet that can be placed onto a glass window pane. When photons from sunlight hit a quantum dot, it sends the electron in the valence band into the conduction band, leaving a hole behind. When the electron recombines with the hole in the valence band, a new photon with lower energy is generated. This new photon propagates within the glass via internal reflections. Energy is then generated when the propagating photons reach the window frame, where solar cells are stored. The coating of quantum dots can be used on any window and to turn it into a sunlight harvesters at costs lower than are currently available. The study was published in Nature Energy on Oct 10. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Ostrich: cyclists peddle faster as world's largest bird runs behind them in Cape Town - TomoNews

02:16
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA — A small group of cyclists were training on a routine bike path down a deserted road, when a wild ostrich snuck out of the bushes and began racing behind them for about 100 seconds. A friend cycling behind them caught the entire scene on camera. The ostrich is indeed the world's largest bird, weighing in at up to 320 pounds, and able to grow up to nine feet tall. While they never evolved to develop the ability to fly, they are mighty runners. At full speed, they can clock up to 43 miles per hour. While they can only do this for short bursts, when it comes to long distances the ostrich can outlast even a cheetah, able to run at over 30 miles per hour for more than 10 miles. Ostriches use their wings as rudders, playing a key role in their running ability, helping them change direction. Their long, thin legs also aid in their speed, covering between 10 and 16 feet in a single bound. When it comes to their food selection, ostriches eat both vegetables and meat, though they do prefer their greens, like leaves, roots, and seeds. They also snack on insects, lizards, snakes, and rodents. While ostriches may sip from a watering hole if they come across one, they receive all the H2O they need from the plants they feast on. At the end of the video, the ostrich runs off the trail and into the bushes, as the cyclists share a laugh at what just happened to them. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Dental disaster? Michigan woman dies after getting 16 teeth pulled at the dentist - TomoNews

01:19
SOUTHFIELD, MICHIGAN — A Michigan woman passed away last Friday after she had 16 teeth removed in one go during a trip to the dentist to treat an infection. April Walters, 46, who was reliant on an oxygen machine because of health problems, was feeling anxious about a trip to the dentist. According to Fox 2 Detroit, Walters suffered from sarcoidosis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary high blood pressure as well as diabetes. Prior to the procedure, Walters had a heart rate of 130 bpm, spurring a dental assistant at Southfield Dental Care to suggest waiting for Walters' heart rate to come down before they continued with the procedure. The dentist, however, allegedly didn't think waiting was necessary, Walters' daughter told Fox 2 Detroit. After the dentist pulled 16 out of the 18 teeth that Walters needed to have pulled, the dentist decided to stop for the day. She then advised Walters to go to the hospital because Walters' heart rate was still so high. Shortly after Walters' sister and her brother-in-law arrived to pick her up from the dentist office, Walters started to have trouble breathing and passed out. It was assumed that her oxygen tank had run out, so they ran into the office to get more oxygen. However, that didn't help and Walters could not be revived, reported Fox 2 Detroit. An autopsy will be done and the dentist's office is currently investigating the incident in order to understand how a woman died so suddenly on their doorstep. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Loyal dog: Marathon runner reunited with adorable dog who ran the Gobi Desert with him - TomoNews

01:37
URUMQI, CHINA — In a story that could have ended in tragedy, it was a miracle that helped a marathoner reunite with his lost dog in a city of more than 3 million people. Dion Leonard was running a marathon in the Gobi Desert in March when a little brown pup sidled up to him, according to an article written by race organizers. For the entire 250-kilometer run across difficult terrain, the dog kept up with him and never left. Leonard called the pup Gobi, and decided to bring her home to Edinburgh with him. While leaving China and entrusting Gobi with a friend after the race, he began the long and expensive process of taking her home, creating a crowdfunding page to help raise money. But on Aug. 6, while waiting to be transferred to Beijing for the quarantine process, Gobi went missing. Leonard flew in from Edinburgh and looked for Gobi all over Urumqi, but for days he failed to find a solid lead. Finally, a man called in to say he had seen posters of Gobi and found a dog at the park matching her exact description. When Leonard arrived at the man’s house, Gobi ran out and jumped all over him. Netizens in China and abroad were quick to offer well-wishes for the newly reunited couple, with additional calls for airlines to fly the duo home, reports the BBC. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Sleeping pods in airports and elsewhere allow you to get some shut eye in public - TomoNews

01:38
ABU DHABI — Sleeping pods placed in convenient locations allow people to get some desperately needed shut eye in public. Google may have popularized the concept of having sleeping pods in the workplace, but they're not the only company that uses them. Way back in 2012 with the London Olympics then approaching, one English company anticipated heavy traffic that would affect employees' commutes. So the company built sleeping pods that allowed employees to sleep in the office with privacy, reported Wired Magazine. These sleeping pods included a single mattress, while more advanced models also featured a stereo and a mirror. And now people can also choose to sleep with some privacy (and dignity) at airports instead of sprawling across several seats in front of gawking onlookers. Abu Dhabi International Airport was the first airport in the world to offer sleeping pods in 2013, although the service has since extended to many other airports worldwide — from Dallas-Fort Worth to London Gatwick. Abu Dhabi's GoSleep sleeping pods allow users to lie completely flat. Each pod is able to partly or fully block out sounds in the busy airport, depending on the user's preference. According to the airport's website, later stage pods offer wifi access, power sockets for charging electronic devices and space to store luggage under the cushion. The GoSleep sleeping pods can be rented out for about US $12 an hour — or about the price of three coffees. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Biogas: Human waste turned into clean power in Cameroon innovative clean energy project - TomoNews

01:27
BUEA, CAMEROON — Two towns in Cameroon have installed biogas systems to turn human waste into sustainable energy that can provide fuel and electricity for local communities. The project was initiated by Bioenergy-Cameroon, a non-governmental youth organization. Local students, especially female students, are trained on how to install and maintain innovative technology systems such as solar power and biogas mechanisms. According to Reuters, the system includes a septic tank, which is connected to a bio-digester at individual households. Human waste placed in the septic tank is converted into biogas inside the bio-digesters, which release energy into people’s homes for cooking and lighting. Reuters reports that more than 3,000 households and local schools in the towns of Buea and Bamenda have installed the biogas system. The Center for Environment and Development, an NGO in Cameroon, estimates that the biogas project may reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the vicinity by up to 60 percent. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Middle East water crisis: UAE plans man-made mountain to increase rainfall - TomoNews

01:25
ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES — The United Arab Emirates is considering building an artificial mountain to increase rainfall and address the country's water shortages. The International Business Times reports that according to the UAE's Federal Water and Electricity Authority, an average resident uses an estimated 550 liters of water daily — almost two to three times the international average of 170 to 300 liters. The high consumption is especially problematic as water in the region is in very short supply due to the arid climate and naturally low precipitation rates. Arabian Business reports that the government has already turned to artificial weather modification. In 2015, $558,000 was spent on cloud-seeding. In February of the same year, the U.S.-based University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) received $400,000 in funding to produce a development plan for a man-made mountain. UCAR is in the early stages of the project. It is collaborating with the National Center of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) in a modelling study to evaluate the effects building a mountain would have on the weather, and what height, width and location would be best. Mountains force air to rise up into the atmosphere, where it cools and condenses into clouds. The clouds then produce rain or are seeded to stimulate precipitation. But cloud seeding can have undesirable outcomes, such as too much rainfall or none at all. Due to the rain shadow effect, an artificial mountain can inhibit rainfall on one side, causing that area to become more parched, according to Discovery. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Pregnant mother suffers second degree burn after falling asleep on her iPhone 7 - TomoNews

01:22
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — A pregnant woman in Australia posted a shocking image on Facebook showing the second degree burn she sustained after falling asleep with her charging iPhone 7. 34-year- old Sydney resident Melanie Tan Pelaez was watching movies on her iPhone 7 while it was being charged on Tuesday night, then she fell asleep, news.com.au reported. The next morning when Pelaez wakes up, she feels pain, pins and needles down her arm, realising she’d been left with an mark of the phone and charger etched into her arm. Pelaez visited a general practitioner and a hospital, they matched the markings on her arm to the phone and the charger. Pelaez took the phone to an Apple store. The staff said it wasn’t the phone’s fault since it supposed to shut off if it overheats. And it didn’t smell like an overheated iPhone. After meeting with the doctors, Pelaez wanted to share her awful experience on Facebook and is afraid the same might happen to someone else. Pelaez told news.com.au that Apple tried to give her a new iPhone 7, but she declined as she has lost her faith in the tech giant’s smartphone. Various media have already contacted Apple for comment, Apple said they are now working with Pelaez to investigate the incident. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. PC culture: Cops called for 'racist' brownie comment at elementary school - TomoNews

01:32
COLLINGSWOOD, NEW JERSEY — The degree to which American police have been in and out of schools to investigate the most minor of incidents is now a punch line. The latest crime in need of police attention? A supposedly racist remark by a 9-year-old concerning a food item. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that during a June 16 class party at William Tatem Elementary School in Collingswood, New Jersey, a boy made a comment about the brownies being served. When a classmate heard the remark and called it racist, the school called the police instead of dealing with the incident internally. Officers came and talked to the student. They later reported the case to New Jersey child protective services. Stacy Dos Santos, the boy’s mother, was furious at the school’s overreaction. According to school officials, however, the incident is but one of several cases where police have been called to deal with typically internal issues. According to the Collingswood Patch, the increased police involvement results from a May 25 directive from the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office. The directive instructs police and school officials to report any incident that could be potentially criminal, including minor ones like name-calling. Angry parents started a petition to stop the increased police involvement in Collingswood schools, prompting the mayor and head prosecutor to cite a misunderstanding on the policy terms. Nevertheless, officers say they’re working with the school district to establish a middle ground. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Skeleton found in jail cell: Man accidentally locked himself in cell 10 years ago - TomoNews

01:00
PATERSON, NEW JERSEY — A skeleton found locked in a holding cell of an abandoned New Jersey police department may be that of a homeless person who accidentally locked himself in and couldn’t get out, NBC 4 reported. The decomposing body was discovered this week by Susan Greenbaum, owner of the building, and a contractor. Greenbaum is in the process of selling the building, according to NBC 4. The building was boarded up in 1980 after it was gutted by an enormous fire, Greenbaum said. Authorities believe the man died about eight to 10 years ago, based on a water bottle and over-the-counter medication found next to him in the cell. According to Greenbaum, police think he may have been a homeless man looking for shelter inside the abandoned building. Paterson police have not yet been able to identify the man, according to the NY Daily News. “The deceased has not been identified and information regarding his identity will not be released at this time,” Capt. Richard Reyes said in a statement. Police are looking for help in identifying the body, the NY Daily News reported. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. FlyDubai crash: 62 killed in passenger jet crash, explosion on Russian runway - TomoNews

01:55
ROSTOV-ON-DON, RUSSIA — High winds and impaired visibility may have caused a passenger jet from the United Arab Emirates to take a nosedive on Saturday, killing all 62 people on board. FlyDubai flight FZ981 had 55 passengers and seven crew members on board when it crashed in Russia Saturday at 3:50 a.m. local time. The Boeing 737, carrying mostly Russians, was flying from Dubai to Rostov-on-Don, a city near the Ukrainian-Russian border. Inclement weather prevented a timely descent and the aircraft circled the airport for more than two hours. A Russian Aeroflot plane scheduled to land at around the same time also circled around and tried to land three times before it then diverted to another airport, reported the National. As flight FZ981 circled the airport, the plane ascended to 4,572 metres but suddenly started to fall at a vertical speed of up to 6,400 metres per minute. A distress call was never made, but as the aircraft approached the airport, the pilots called air traffic control and asked about the weather conditions. Just 240 metres from the runway in Rostov-on-Don, the plane reportedly clipped a wing and the aircraft burst into flames. According to Reuters, both of the black boxes have been retrieved undamaged. Authorities do not believe terrorism caused the crash. Instead, they’re focusing on several possibilities: technical issues, severe weather and human error. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Earthquake proof bed latest invention to come out of China, may save lives - TomoNews

01:39
HEBEI PROVINCE, CHINA - The 2008 Sichuan earthquake in China left more than 90,000 people either dead or missing, so of course it sparked a need to design more earthquake-proof buildings and sometimes furniture. One such design comes from Wang Wenxi, a man who received a patent for his earthquake-proof bed design in 2010. He’s been updating his designs and offers more than one type of bed for those wary of being caught sleeping and unaware during an earthquake. The bed resembles a cross between a panic room and a coffin. Some of the designs drop the sleeper directly inside the bed which closes up like a box, there is space for owners to store food, water, and other supplies. Unfortunately, Wang’s video and company don’t offer any explanation for how rescue crews are supposed to locate the beds in collapsed buildings and don’t show how the person inside is supposed to be able to get out. Other risks could also include caught or broken limbs if the person doesn’t sleep within the outlined parameters of the bed. There’s also the question of what happens if a person is caught outside of the bed, say during the day time or perhaps just getting up to visit the toilet. It seems like a good idea at first glance, but clearly there are still a lot of details to be worked out. The price tag on these things probably isn’t cheap either, so for those who can’t afford earthquake-proof beds it looks we’ll just have to stick to traditional methods such as hiding in a bathtub, under tables, or shielding your head with something soft like a pillow and then running for the door as soon as possible. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Dumb immigration mistake: Brit uses passport as TOILET PAPER, denied entry into Thailand - TomoNews

01:29
THAILAND — A British national says she was denied entry into Thailand last month after making what's probably the dumbest passport-related mistake we've ever heard of. Faye Wilson had been attempting to make her way to the south-east Asian nation from Australia, but was stopped by immigration officials who were curious as to why her passport was missing several pages. The embarrassed 28-year-old hairdresser was refused entry into the country after lying to Thai authorities, telling them she'd "lost" the pages, according to a Daily Mirror report. The real answer: she'd ripped them out herself to use the pages as toilet paper.Wilson says that during a drunken night out a few years back, she found herself lacking the stuff so she reached for the only paper she had at the time, that is, the paper attached to her passport. Ripping out two or three may have saved her from undue embarrassment that night, but it caused some serious problems down the road. Thai immigration officials sent her packing back to the UK via Dubai, presumably at some serious expense. The 28-year-old was eventually able to make her way back to Thailand to reunite with the friend she'd abruptly left behind, but she's no doubt learned one serious lesson. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Archeology discovery: Ancient Roman villa discovered under Wiltshire, England farmhouse - TomoNews

01:32
WILTSHIRE, ENGLAND — A British rug designer just wanted to lay electric cables to his barn so that his children could play ping pong inside, but in doing so he unearthed what may be one of the biggest Roman villas in the United Kingdom. Workmen digging at a farmhouse in southwest England last February discovered a hard layer 18 inches below the surface that turned out to be pieces of a mosaic. Property owner Luke Irwin said he sent a photo of the mosaic to the local council. He told the New York Times that within 24 hours, a team of archeologists were on his property. Archaeologists then began an eight-day dig at the farmhouse and in the field next to the house. Only a few test pits have been dug, but according to the New York Times, archaeologists say that the existing walls seem to be more than a meter tall. The farmhouse appears to be sitting on a slab of marble in the middle of what was a Roman villa, which measured about 50 meters long by 50 meters wide and was probably about three stories high. According to the Guardian, the building was built between AD 175 and 220 and has not been touched for at least 1,500 years — withstanding the collapse of the Roman Empire and the Saxons. A whole range of artifacts have been found on site during the excavation, including a child's tomb, oyster shells, brooches, animal bones and coins, suggesting that the owners of the villa were wealthy. Artifacts from the dig have been taken to the Salisbury Museum, while the dig has been covered up until archeologists obtain more funding to do a proper investigation. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. South China Sea dispute: Vietnam begins dredging on Ladd Reef in disputed waters - TomoNews

01:32
LADD REEF, SOUTH CHINA SEA — Satellite images taken by a U.S. based firm revealed suspected dredging work on Ladd Reef, a coral reef controlled by Vietnam in the South China Sea. Ladd Reef is about 450 km from Vietnam’s southeastern coast and is completely submerged at high tide. It has a 42-meter-tall lighthouse, which is operated by a small number of Vietnam soldiers and worker. Analysts told Reuters that such dredging work could be the precursor to more extensive construction on other reefs, and Ladd Reef might be used to boost access for supply ships and fishing boats. It could also help defend the nearby Spratly Islands, where Vietnam has expanded its airstrip. Vietnam is one of the many nations that claims the South China Sea as part of its territory. China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan have also made claims in the region. Vietnam has become China’s main rival in the disputed South China Sea. According to Reuters, the mobile rocket launchers installed on several islands controlled by Vietnam are capable of striking China’s runway and military installations. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Anton Yelchin killed: Star Trek actor crushed by 2.5 ton jeep at Hollywood home - TomoNews

01:10
LOS ANGELES — Star Trek star Anton Yelchin was killed Sunday morning after being crushed in a freak car accident. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Yelchin’s vehicle was in neutral on a steep driveway when the accident happened at his San Fernando Valley home. He was reportedly on his way to meet friends when the car rolled backward and crushed Yelchin against a pillar and security fence. His friends later discovered his body when they went to check on him after he didn’t show up. Police say they don’t suspect foul play in Yelchin’s death. Many of Hollywood’s biggest stars paid tribute to Yelchin on social media, including Star Trek director JJ Abrams. In a heartfelt note, he wrote: “Anton - you were brilliant. You were kind. You were funny as hell, and supremely talented. And you weren’t here nearly long enough. Missing you, JJ.” The 27-year-old was best known for his role as Russian math genius Pavel Chekov in the new Star Trek films. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Locked up by mistake: Visitor held in Chicago jail for 32 hours gets $600,000 payout - TomoNews

01:34
CHICAGO — A man who was accidentally locked up in a Chicago jail for more than 30 hours was this week awarded $600,000 in compensation. Farad Polk, 51, was visiting his son at the Cook County Jail in July 2014, when guards told him to “go down the hallway and turn right,” NBC 5 Chicago reported. Following the guards’ directions, Polk entered a visiting room used for super-maximum security prisoners, only for the door to slam shut behind him. As it was a weekend, the room wasn’t being used and nobody could hear Polk shouting for help. Polk spent 32 hours locked up, without any food or water, no bed to sleep in and nowhere to answer the call of nature. Polk was busted out when he broke a sprinkler head and the fire department showed up to see what the problem was. He was handcuffed and questioned before he was released, and also had to get stitches in one of his thumbs from when he broke the sprinkler. Polk said he thought he would die in the jail and sued for emotional trauma. He also said he has been unable to return to the jail to visit his son, who is being held there on drugs charges. On Monday, Polk was awarded a $600,000 settlement. A spokeswoman for the jail described the incident as “a bizarre set of circumstances” and said they were sorry. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Bryan Silva armed standoff: Gratata Vine star denied bond after arrest with pants down - TomoNews

01:37
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA — Viral video star Bryan Silva has made his last post to social media for a while after a court on Monday denied him bond following an armed standoff with police. Silva, 25, a gun-toting rapper, bodybuilder and porn star, has millions of followers on social media, including more than 1.5 million on Facebook. He is best known for a 2014 Vine that has been viewed more than 18.5 million times in which he stands shirtless in the bathroom, pretending to fire a gun with his fingers and making a noise that goes "gratata." Silva uploaded expletive-laden video updates to Facebook on Sunday as he engaged in an armed standoff with police at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia according to NBC affiliate WVIR. Police were called after Silva's 17-year-old girlfriend fled the house. She claimed he threatened her with a gun and warned he would shoot police, according to WVIR. Silva barricaded himself in the house and posted another video to Facebook showing him dancing and drinking what appeared to be vodka, WVIR reported. Silva was arrested when members of police tactical squads used chemical irritants to force him out of the house. He was filmed being led away by police with his pants around his ankles in footage that has, of course, gone viral. Silva told a judge on Monday that he was employed by Facebook and mentioned his more than 1.5 million followers, according to WIVR. He claimed he did not know he was still on probation from a previous assault charge. The court appointed him an attorney for a preliminary hearing in February, WIVR reported. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. NASA planet discovery: Kepler space telescope finds 1,284 new planets in our galaxy - TomoNews

01:49
WASHINGTON — NASA's Kepler mission, launched in 2009 and with two more years to go, has detected 1,284 new exoplanets, including nine worlds that may be able to sustain life. NASA announced on Tuesday that the Kepler Space Telescope, which searches for planets in our Milky Way that lie up to 3,000 light years from Earth, has verified 1,284 new planets. Five hundred and fifty appear to be rocky based on their size. Of these 550, nine are located just far enough from their suns to suggest they may contain water. The latest finding nearly doubles the number of confirmed exoplanets and is the largest number of new planets announced at one time, reported Space. According to NASA's statement, the new findings can be credited to a computer simulation and a new statistical method that takes into account such factors as how many total stars are in our galaxy. The total number of exoplanets discovered now stands at 3,200. A total of 21 of these may be habitable. The Kepler mission shows that with at least 70 billion stars in our galaxy, there may be billions of habitable, Earth-sized planets out there that have yet to be discovered. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Father dies saving daughter from electrocution in pool in Palm Springs, California - TomoNews

01:21
PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA — A father died Easter Sunday while trying to save his 9-year-old daughter from being electrocuted in a pool. Police responded to a home in the 2300 block of Yosemite Drive in the Indian Canyons neighborhood in Palm Springs, California, after a caller reported that people were "turning blue after jumping into the pool." According to police, a family had gathered for Easter when several members decided to go for a dip in the pool. Jim Tramel, 43, noticed his eldest daughter was being shocked to death in the water. Police believe Tramel jumped in after to save her. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found relatives performing CPR on Tramel and the 9-year-old girl. Shortly after, Tramel was pronounced dead at Desert Regional Medical Center. His daughter remains in critical condition at Loma Linda Medical Center. Police are currently investigating the incident, but believe the electric shocks may have been a result of faulty pool wiring. Five other people were also shocked in the pool, but as they were farther away from the faulty equipment, their injuries were not as severe. Tramel's wife Kim, 45, and their 6-year-old son and younger 8-year-old daughter along with another 6-year-old girl were taken to hospital for their injuries on Sunday but have since been released. A 10-year-old girl remains at Loma Linda Medical Center in stable condition. A GoFundMe account has been set up in memoriam of Tramel by his colleague, founder and CEO of RevJet, Mitchell Weisman. The account has raised over $100,000 toward a stipend for the family to be used by Tramel's wife for "the welfare and education of her children, and/or as one or more donation(s) to some deserving non-profit(s) of her choice." ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Quebec prison break 2013: video capturing moments of prison escape released - TomoNews

02:10
QUEBEC, CANADA — A video showing two inmates escaping a Quebec prison by helicopter in 2013 has been released earlier this week. The video was filmed by prison guards, when two inmates, Benjamin Hudon-Barbeau and Danny Provencal, escaped from Saint-Jérôme detention centre near Montreal. In the video, the two inmates seem to be having troubles climbing onto the roof. The chopper then lifts off with the two escapees dangling from the rope and eventually carries them outside the prison. Hudon-Barbeau and Provencal co-ordinated their escape with two accomplices via text messages on smuggled cellphones in the prison. The accomplices hijacked a helicopter and forced its pilot to land on the roof of the prison at gunpoint. The four suspects then forced the pilot to land in a parking lot roughly 40 km from the prison before boarding a getaway car. Hours later, the four were arrested in the town of Chertsey. The pilot was found unharmed. In response to why the prison guards had failed to stop the inmates from escaping, the union that represents the prison guards says they did not have guns to confront the armed accomplices, therefore they had no option but to watch the inmates leaving. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. John Hinckley Jr.: Reagan shooter now free decades after assassination attempt - TomoNews

07:05
WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA — More than three decades after attempting to assassinate a president and almost succeeding, John Hinckley Jr. is now a free man. On March 30, 1981, just 69 days into his presidency, U.S. President Ronald Reagan was hit by a bullet while walking out of the Hilton Hotel in Washington. The shooter was John Warnock Hinckley, Jr., who hid among the crowd and fired six Devastator bullets from a .22 caliber revolver. Four people were injured in the shooting: Press Secretary James Brady, D.C. police officer Thomas Delahanty, Secret Service Agent Tim McCarthy, and the President himself. All four survived. Hinckley had been infatuated with actress Jodie Foster and the film Taxi Driver. He emulated the film’s lead character and believed that by assassinating the President, he would become famous and gain Foster’s love and respect. He was tried for the assassination attempt in 1982, but received a not guilty verdict by reason of insanity. Instead of prison, he was sent to St. Elizabeth’s, a federal psychiatric facility. Though initially deemed a danger to himself and others, Hinckley was eventually granted brief outside visits. Over the years, he has been allowed to have longer visits with his mother at her Williamsburg, Virginia home. Last month, Hinckley was granted release after a judge deemed him cured of his psychosis. He is now living full-time with his mother and must remain with her for at least the next year. One of the conditions of his release is that he cannot contact any of his victims, their families, or Jodie Foster. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Two cave divers die in underwater Florida labyrinth known as ‘Mount Everest of diving’ - TomoNews

01:29
WEEKI WACHEE, FLORIDA — Two divers died exploring an underwater cave system in Florida known to be one of the world’s most beautiful, but also most dangerous diving sites. The bodies of Patrick Peacock, 53, and Chris Rittenmeyer, 38, were found by rescue divers in the Eagle’s Nest cave system on Monday, NBC affiliate WFLA reported. Eagle’s Nest is also known as the Lost Sink. Divers access the underwater caves through a pond in the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Refuge. Among divers, the caves are considered the Mount Everest or Grand Canyon of diving sites for their stunning views and extreme depths. The treacherous tunnels contain around a mile of passages, some of them more than 300 feet deep. Peacock and Rittenmeyer explored deep into the caves on Sunday, while a third diver, Justin Blakely, stayed nearer the surface. Blakely raised the alarm when his two friends failed to show up on time at their meeting point. The two dead divers were found in a complex and dangerous part of the cave system, according to deputies. They are the ninth and tenth divers to die at Eagle’s Nest since 1981. Both men were experienced cave divers and had explored the site before. Florida man Chester Spivey, whose son and grandson died at Eagle’s Nest on Christmas Day 2013, renewed calls for the site to be closed in the wake of Peacock and Rittenmeyer’s deaths. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Kickboxing gone wrong: Man’s leg bends wrong way during Muay Thai training session - TomoNews

01:03
TORONTO — Video footage of a kickboxing demonstration shows a man’s leg bending in the wrong direction after a kick from the instructor pops his knee out of joint. The video was reportedly taken in 2012 but was only recently uploaded to YouTube. The video, supposedly taken at a Muay Thai class, show two men at a practice session when the teacher delivers a low kick on a student during a training session. However, the demonstration goes terribly wrong when this causes the student’s knee to pop out of joint, forcing his lower leg to bend in the wrong direction. The student is clearly in pain as he tries to sit down, but is unable to because of his awkwardly bent leg beneath him. Instead of cries of horror, people behind the camera can be heard laughing as the teacher quickly positions himself on the other side of the student to deliver another swift kick that pops the student’s leg back into place. Surprisingly, the student seems to think the entire ordeal is pretty funny too and is seen in the video laughing along with the rest of the bystanders. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Cancer breakthrough: T-cell therapy and cancer vaccine could offer future lasting cure - TomoNews

02:15
SEATTLE — Scientists in the U.S. and in Italy are developing a revolutionary cancer therapy that would teach the body to destroy cancer cells on its own, reducing the need for debilitating chemotherapy treatments. The new technique developed by the Cancer Research Center in Seattle, involves removing T-cells from patients, and genetically modify them by adding chimeric antigen receptors, or CARs, from genetically engineered mice. The modified T-cells are then injected back into the patient's body, and are able to target and destroy cancer cells. The therapy is similar to a treatment given last year to British baby Layla Richards, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a disease in which the bone marrow makes too many immature lymphocytes, Sky News reported. Richards received her treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital in central London and was left cancer-free. Recent T-cell immunotherapy trials have shown great results also in the U.S. More than 40 patients with different types of blood cancers were treated, and more than half of them were left cancer-free. Among patients with terminal leukemia, 94 percent went into remission. Being in remission, however, still implies the cancer could eventually return. In a second major breakthrough in Italy, researchers at the University of Milan have discovered that memory T-cells can stay in the body for at least 14 years, according to a study published on the San Raffaele Hospital website. This means the cells could be trained to fight cancer as well as to remember the disease in case it comes back, allowing them to defeat it again. The latest discovery gives hope for the development of a vaccine-style drug that could stop cancer from coming back once it has been defeated. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Ski fails: Pro-skier Angel Collinson survives 1,000 foot fall down Alaskan mountain - TomoNews

01:31
ALASKA — Angel Collinson is known for dropping jaws for her success on the slopes, but her tumble down a Neacola Range mountain in Alaska last spring made our jaws hit the floor. At first, video of the incident shows the pro-skier navigating through the powder with ease, but something happened when she hit a patch of icy snow. Collinson lost her footing and began a tumble that took her 1,000 feet downhill. Surprisingly, she was able to walk away from the spill with just a couple jammed fingers. Otherwise, she was completely unscathed. "I'm ok, I'm ok," she said when she finally came to a stop. Collinson told ABC News, "I covered my face and protected her head with my arms. And I kinda just held on until I stopped." ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Scientists convert carbon dioxide into rock in breakthrough climate change experiment - TomoNews

01:18
HENGILL, ICELAND — Researchers are hailing a potential game-changer for climate change after successfully converting carbon to rock at a geothermal power plant in Iceland. The project could help to reduce global warming by burying the waste CO2 produced from burning fossil fuels, the Guardian reported. Scientists at the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant converted carbon dioxide into the volcanic rock basalt, according to a study published in the journal Science. The researchers pumped 230 tons of CO2 into rock 500 meters underground, dissolving the gas in water to prevent it from escaping. More than 95 percent of the gas turned to stone within two years, speeding up a natural process that takes hundreds or thousands of years, the Guardian reported. A potential problem for the technique is that it requires 25 tons of water for every ton of buried CO2. However, researchers said seawater can be used, which is abundant at coastal sites, the Guardian reported. The project is seen as an improvement on existing carbon capture and storage methods that store CO2 as a gas, causing concern about potential leaks. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Ring of Fire: Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions around the Pacific explained - TomoNews

01:43
QUITO, ECUADOR — Hundreds were killed and more injured when earthquakes hit Japan on Thursday and Saturday morning and Ecuador on Saturday night. Despite occurring only 32 hours apart, experts believe the two are not related. The only commonality is that both are located in the seismically active Ring of Fire, reports Reuters. The Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped arc around the Pacific Ocean that extends from South America all the way to New Zealand. At about 25,000 miles long, its most visible features are the volcanoes that dot the coast and make up roughly 75 percent of all active volcanoes on earth, according to National Geographic. Throughout history, cataclysmic eruptions have occurred in this area, as well as 90 percent of the world's earthquakes. According to National Geographic, both are caused by the movement of tectonic plates — huge slabs of the earth's crust. When plates slide horizontally past each other, some parts get stuck. Built-up stress in those areas eventually cause the rock to break or slip, and the plates to lurch forward, causing earthquakes. Plates that collide form convergent plate boundaries, which give rise to volcanoes through subduction. Those that pull apart form divergent boundaries, which become the site for seafloor spreading and rift valleys. A less-powerful quake in Tonga also occurred Sunday. It, too, is believed to be unrelated to those in Ecuador and Japan, reports SBS. Despite this, an increase in global seismic activity in recent years is still cause for concern. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Homeless in LA: Homeless man living in personal paradise in LA freeway underpass - TomoNews

01:30
LOS ANGELES — A homeless fella turned his lemons into more than just lemonade, as he transformed a dinky freeway underpass into opulent digs he’s proud to call home. Ceola Waddell, 59, didn’t want to spend his nights in a cardboard box, when he could live nicely like everybody else, the Los Angeles Times reported. Waddell’s underpass crib has all the furnishings: a four-poster bed and couch decked out in animal print, porcelain toilet, a makeshift Jacuzzi, and more. It’s even big enough to fit extras, including a tent that’s rented out to other homeless people for $25 a week. A video tour of the eye-popping accommodation eventually made it to Facebook, where it’s been viewed more than 1.4 million times. As a result, Waddell now has fans who trek to his underpass compound, which he calls Paradise Lane, to get a good look and take photos with him. But not everyone is happy about the lavish crib. City sanitation crews have dismantled the makeshift abode twice. Each time, Waddell scavenged neighborhoods for useful junk and rebuilt his setup. Homelessness remains a growing issue in LA, with numerous encampments around the city. Officials struggle to get people off the streets and into temporary housing, while figuring out a permanent solution for the problem. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Unconscious pilot in F-16 saved by Auto-GCAS NASA collision avoidance system - TomoNews

01:38
EDWARDS, CALIFORNIA — Last month, a NASA-supported collision avoidance system saved the life of an F-16 pilot in a fourth confirmed rescue. It was the fourth confirmed case where the Auto-GCAS has rescued an aircraft since it was introduced into the Air Force F-16 fleet in late 2014, according to Aviation Week. NASA reported that the Tucson Air National Guard was conducting a standard training exercise with basic fighter maneuvers in F-16s when a student pilot was engaged in an exercise where he and his instructor tried to out-maneuver the each other. Following the pass, the student, traveling at over 8 Gs, lost consciousness. This effect, known as G-LOC (G-force induced loss of consciousness), is a common among pilots traveling at high speeds, during which the the heart and vascular system may not be able supply blood and oxygen to the brain fast enough, which leads to a loss of consciousness. After experiencing G-LOC, the student’s aircraft continued accelerating toward the ground. As the instructor attempted to call out to the unconscious student to recover, the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (Auto-GCAS) kicked in and performed an automatic, stabilizing pull-up, bringing the plane in an upright position. The Auto-GCAS is designed to constantly compare the aircraft’s trajectory with that of a terrain profile obtained from an onboard digital terrain database, according to NASA. If a threat is detected, warning signals are given to the pilot. If no action is taken, the system takes control away from the pilot and executes an evasion command. Control is returned to the pilot as soon as the aircraft is on a safe trajectory. Auto-GCAS has been continually developed over 30 years in a collaboration between NASA, the Air Force Research Lab and Lockheed Martin. The effects of g-force on the human body, including grey out, tunnel vision, blackout and G-LOC have been studied as early as 1919. Fighter pilots are heavily trained to endure high levels of g force, with many even having lost their lives in the process. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
