Child kidnapping stopped: Hero bus driver saves three-year-old from abductor - TomoNews

01:47
MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA — A Northern California bus driver is being hailed a hero after he says he followed his parental instincts, an intuition so sharp it led him to stop a kidnapper from abducting a young boy on Friday. A 3-year-old boy was reported kidnapped at the Milpitas Public Library at around 10:40 a.m. Local police quickly responded, closing the library to incoming and outgoing traffic and sending alerts to all area bus drivers to be on the lookout. Tim Watson was on his morning shift when he caught sight of one of the alerts and about an hour later, the driver noticed a passenger in his mid-20's with a crying boy, both of whom matched descriptions mentioned in the police alert. Trusting his fatherly instincts Watson pulled the bus over and announced that someone had lost a backpack. "What I'm really trying to do is to get up without him knowing to look at the little boy," Watson told ABC 7 News. "So sure enough, I see the plaid shorts and red shoes. That's what really stuck out in my mind." The father of two noticed the boy's red shoes and quickly radioed police. "And that's when my own kids came to mind and I just broke down. I couldn't hold myself down. I just had to go inside the bus and reflect," said Watson. The parents of the child were too emotional to speak publicly, but were thankful to both the police and Watson for rescuing their little boy. Milpitas police detained Alfonso David Edington, 23, who had no connections to the family and is currently being held on charges of kidnapping. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Fight caught on tape: U-Haul mover with MMA fighting skills knocks out antagonist - TomoNews

01:21
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS — A U-Haul mover with some serious MMA skills dropped a man, who was disrupting their work, on his head. The video was recorded in September but only recently found it's way to the web. Movers are by nature big, strong, and used to throwing things around, and boy did one shirtless numbskull learn that the hard way in Boston's Chinatown. The antagonist also got a lesson about why it's not a good idea to mess with people you don't know. The video was uploaded over the weekend, but after a skull-cracking like that, the guy may never fully understand what happened. The sleepy shirtless man finally came to and stumbled to his feet. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. 'Freeway' the cat saved by a good Samaritan on busy Phoenix highway

01:50
A selfless passerby who saved a cat trapped on a busy highway last week is being hailed as a hero. Richard Christianson posted a video of himself online saving an orange Tabby cat trapped on the I-17 in Phoenix, Arizona on April 9. Christianson tried calling the emergency services and public safety offices but they couldn't send help fast enough. So, seeing no other option, he took it upon himself to save the cat, who was bleeding from the mouth and paws after trying to escape from the highway. The cat, named Freeway, is in care at an animal hospital following surgery. Doctors expect him to make a full recovery. Once at full health Freeway will be available for adoption. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Ebola virus turns doctor's eyes green, virus lurks in eyeballs and testicles - TomoNews

01:32
The West African Ebola epidemic is almost over, after leaving 10,000 people dead between 2013 and 2015. But doctors have now discovered the virus can live on for months inside the eyeballs of those who survive it. Dr. Ian Crozier, an American, contracted Ebola while treating patients in Sierra Leone in September 2014. He was flown to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta on September 9th, and with the help of experimental drugs and round the clock care for 40 straight days, he managed to survive Ebola. Or so he thought. In December 2014, two months after beating the virus, he was back at Emory with intense pain in his left eye. Ophthalmologist Dr. Steven Yeh pierced Dr. Crozier's eye with a hair-thin needle to take a fluid sample. When they examined the fluid, they discovered that Dr. Crozier's eyeballs were swarming with the Ebola virus. His tears and outer eye were free of the virus, so he wasn't contagious, the virus was completely confined to the inside of his eyes. Dr. Crozier was re-hospitalized as he started to go blind. The virus even changed his swollen eyes from blue to green, then started to deflate them as the pressure dropped. Finally, after trying everything else, his doctors got permission from the FDA to try an experimental antiviral drug. It took months, but Dr. Crozier's vision eventually returned. He and the doctors at Emory now hope his experience can help the tens of thousands of Ebola survivors in West Africa through their recovery as well. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Russia superhighway: NYC to London by car a reality or pipedream?

01:28
Driving from London to New York City would be possible if Russia succeeds in building a superhighway spanning across the country with links to western Europe and Asia. During a March meeting, head of the Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin unveiled an ambitious plan called the Trans-Eurasian Belt Development, which entails constructing a superhighway and an accompanying high-speed railway. If the plan is realised, motorists will be able to drive from London to New York. Russia hopes the development will spur the economies of remote cities and towns. The Trans-Siberian Railway is about 9,000 kilometres long. According to CNN, a road trip from London to New York would cover about 20,777 kilometers. Yakunin said other infrastructure such as oil pipelines, power plants and water supply facilities will be built alongside the highway and high-speed railway. The mega highway system will face a multitude of difficulties, one of them being the connection to Alaska across the Bering Strait. Either a long bridge or a undersea tunnel would be needed. Money is likely to be another challenge. Russian Railways said the construction cost would amount to trillions of dollars. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Pinworms in your butt: 7YO infected with millions of worms from biting her nails

01:25
You know when your mom and dad tell you to go wash your hands before eating, but you don’t really think your hands are all that dirty? Think again. You could have tiny nearly invisible pinworm eggs under your fingernails. Pinworms are tiny worms that commonly infect the intestines, particularly of children. Pinworms are really small, about as long as a staple. They infect their host by getting in through the mouth, then the eggs pass through the digestive tract and hatch in the small intestine. The baby worm then grows up and moves out into the large intestine. The females will move to the very end of the large intestine and come out of the body at night to lay their eggs around the host’s anus. A 7 year old girl living in Fujian had a bad habit of nail biting and began complaining to her mother that her bottom itched. The mother used a flashlight to examine her daughter’s anus and was shocked to see something wriggling around along the edges. Ah, the joys of parenthood! Anyway, she immediately took her daughter to the hospital. The doctor explained that since the pinworms came out late at night to lay their eggs around the girl’s anus she would often scratch her anus, then bite her nails, thus feeding the pinworms back into her system. The girl had quite a colony of wriggling pinworms living inside her by the time her mother brought her to hospital. The doctor gave her girl some de-worming medication and she should be worm free within 2 weeks. Maybe now she’ll wash her hands when her parents tell her to. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. New powerful antibiotic Teixobactin discovered

01:17
U.S. scientists have discovered a new class of antibiotic that can kill many kinds of drug-resistant pathogens, according to a report published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Many pathogens have evolved to resist antibiotics developed from bacteria that can be grown in labs. So the scientists developed the new drug, known as Teixobactin, by screening 10,000 bacterial strains from soil that cannot be cultured in labs. To grow germs from soil bacteria, scientists filled a device containing several hundred dotted chambers with cells from different bacterium. The device, which they call the iChip, was then placed in soil to allow the bacteria to grow. Once the bacteria were cultivated, they were placed in a petri dish and covered by a target bacteria, called Staph. Empty zones in the petri dish signalled that the bacteria below had released an antibiotic that inhibited the growth of the target Staph bacteria. The newly discovered antibiotic, Teixobactin, kills a class of bacteria called gram-positive bacteria by binding to the building blocks they use to construct their cell walls and causing the cell walls to break down. It is especially effective against bacteria that cause certain types of tuberculosis and pneumonia, and Staphylococcus aureus, which causes MRSA. Teixobactin, however, does not work against gram-negative bacteria, including bacteria that cause cholera and gonorrhea. Kim Lewis, a professor at Northeastern University in Boston and lead author of the study, told the Wall Street Journal that there could be human trials of Teixobactin in two years. He said the trials could take two to three years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Soldier jumps on grenade: Hero Marine who saved squad in Iraq denied Medal of Honor - TomoNews

01:38
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — After years of fighting for a Medal of Honor nomination, the family of a heroic Marine sergeant has given up and instead accepted a Navy Cross on his behalf. Sgt. Rafael Peralta died in Iraq after absorbing the blow of a grenade that would likely have killed members of his team. He was just 25. Former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel rejected the Medal of Honor bid because the details of Peralta’s death are still under dispute. On the morning of November 15th 2004, Peralta’s team was clearing houses in Fallujah. Inside the fourth house, the team threw open a door to find several insurgents armed with AK-47s. The Marines exchanged fire with the men and killed one of the insurgents. During the fire exchange, a bullet struck Rafael, severely injuring him. Reports indicate Peralta was struck by a bullet from his own team as he tried to move out of the line of fire. As the remaining insurgents retreated, a grenade landed next to Peralta. Initial reports indicated he pulled the grenade under his body in an effort to shield his men from the explosion. But later reports contradicted that story. “I can remember people saying it would be the right thing to do, to say that he did more than he did,” said Reggie Brown, who was inside the house with Peralta, during a 2014 interview with the Washington Post. “I disagree with everything my fellow Marines proclaim to have seen,” Brown said. Other Marines have disputed Brown’s statement. Regardless, Peralta’s body did absorb the blow of the grenade, which normally has a 5-meter killing radius. On Monday morning, Peralta’s mother accepted the Navy Cross, which is the second highest award a Marine can receive. Peralta’s brother spoke at the ceremony and read the last letter he received from the fallen hero. In it, Peralta told his little brother to “just remember that I already lived my life to the fullest.” Peralta was a Mexican immigrant, who reportedly enlisted in the military the same day he received his green card. “His legacy will carry on as long as the Marine Corps stays alive,” Rick Peralta said during the ceremony. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Tracks covered with thick, deep snow is no problem for this train in New Brunswick, Canada. In the video, the train’s windshield is completely covered with snow as it approaches a level crossing. How can the conductor see outside? Though the snow is thick and heavy, the freight train shows no sign of stopping. It barrels through, creating a huge avalanche of snow that covers videographer Darren Gordon. Cure for Alzheimer's? Ultrasound shows potential in clearing toxic brain plaques

01:32
Australian researchers have found that mice suffering from Alzheimer's performed much better in behaviour tests after receiving ultrasound treatment, a discovery that could give hope in the battle to find a cure for humans suffering from the degenerative illness. Neurotransmitter activities are disrupted in the brain of Alzheimer's patients. Beta amyloids, a natural protein, accumulated in a patient's brain, leading to the formation of plaques that can damage nerve cells. The cerebral cortex of Alzheimer's patients also shrink as symptoms progress. Scientists at the University of Queensland in Australia conducted a series of tests in which they injected a solution containing tiny gas bubbles in mice. Ultrasound treatment helps the gas bubbles to expand. The bubbles then temporarily open a gap in the blood-brain barrier, allowing the entrance of antibodies into the brain. The antibodies remove toxic beta amyloids thus reducing the size of plaques in the patient's brain. Researchers plan to carry out the same tests in larger animals such as sheep. Tests in humans will be more difficult because of the harder human skull, which ultrasonic waves cannot easily penetrate. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Free-range kids: CPS takes children away from couple again in example of parenting police state

01:39
A family in Silver Spring, Maryland could face charges for child neglect for the second time in a matter of months. Danielle and Sasha Meitiv found themselves in the national spotlight in January, after neighbors complained they were letting their children roam the neighborhood unattended. The Meitivs -- who are both scientists -- insisted they were right to allow their children, aged 10 and 6, to play in the park or walk home from school without adult supervision. They were in the process of appealing Child Protective Service's child neglect charge. Then it happened again. On Sunday, Rafi Meitiv and his younger sister Dvora were just a few blocks from home when a police officer pulled up. "The policeman said 'we'll give you a ride home' when we were like two blocks away," Rafi told a Fox 5 reporter. "So we got into the car and then about two and a half hours later -- after sitting in the car for two and a half hours -- he said, 'okay I'll bring you home,'" Rafi said. But the officer took the two children to CPS without notifying Danielle and Sasha. The parents finally received a call around 8 p.m., but were not permitted to see their children for several more hours. "It's 10:30 at night," Danielle told reporters once CPS handed the children over. "They've been missing since 6 o'clock." Danielle said the kids normally carry "free range" badges so neighbors know they're not lost, but the children had left them behind that day. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Kidnapping escape: boy uses tricks he learned from crime movies in Sichuan, China - TomoNews

01:29
DEYANG, CHINA — A teenage boy who was kidnapped on his way to school in China's Sichuan province on September 24 was able to escape using tactics he learned by watching crime movies, the People's Daily Online reported. The 13-year-old was thrown in the back of a van and then was bound and gagged in an abandoned building located in a remote village. Elite Readers reported that the kidnapper called his parents and had the teen tell them that he had been kidnapped and to not contact the police, before demanding the equivalent of around $20,462 in ransom money. When he thought his captor had left, the boy untied himself and tried to flee, but the kidnapper was just outside of the building and caught him. The teen was tied up tighter, but when the kidnapper had left a second time, the boy shouted to see if he was still there, and then fled the abandoned building while still tied up. The boy made it to a nearby residential area, where he was rescued by residents who called the police. The kidnapper was arrested at a cybercafe later that day. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Renewable energy: CETO system converts sea waves into zero-emission electricity

01:21
An Australian company has been working on a system that uses underwater buoys to convert sea waves into zero-emission energy and desalinated water. Australian firm Carnegie Wave Energy has been developing a system called CETO, which aims to utilise sea waves to generate power. Steel-made buoys that can currently generate 240 kilowatts are the main part of the system. At the Australian naval base HMAS Stirling, three buoys are placed 11 kilometres apart. The buoys are less susceptible to extreme weather damage, while underwater waves are sufficient to generate power. The buoys' pumps drive the high pressure water to an onshore power plant via a subsea pipe. The high pressure water spins the turbines, which then generate zero-carbon electricity. The CETO system can be used to power a desalination plant as well. High pressure water can be utilised to remove salt from seawater through a permeable membrane in a process called reverse osmosis. The Australian company believes that the cost of electricity generated by the CETO system will be competitive with diesel if it is deployed at a large scale. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Zoo animals escape in flood: lions, bears and hippos on the loose after river overflows - TomoNews

01:41
TBILISI, GEORGIA — Residents in the capital of Georgia stayed inside Sunday as authorities worked to capture dozens of carnivorous animals that escaped from the zoo and roamed free in the streets after a debilitating flood. The flood in Tbilisi mangled cars, damaged homes and killed at least 12 people, the BBC reported. The River Vere overflowed its banks and flooded the Tbilisi Zoo Saturday night. The river normally holds very little water, according to the BBC, and runs parallel to a highway through the middle of the city. The rising waters loosened dozens of animal cages inside the zoo. Three zoo workers died in the flood, including Guliko Chitadze, a 25-year veteran who had her arm amputated after a tiger attacked her in May. Dozens of animals representing a range of species escaped as a result of the flood, according to Tbilisi Zoo spokeswoman Mzia Sharashidze. "Some 20 wolves, eight lions, white tigers, tigers, jackals, jaguars have either been shot dead by special forces or are missing. Only three out of our 17 penguins were saved," Sharashidze said. Images from the aftermath showed a tranquilized hippopotamus in the street, a small bear clinging to the second-story wall of a building and several large animals dead along the river banks. Rescue officials reportedly focused their efforts on tranquilizing the escaped animals. But some of the more dangerous animals had to be killed, including six wolves that were found roaming the grounds of a children's hospital, the New York Times reported. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Exploding hoverboard burns family's house down in Louisiana - TomoNews

01:20
LAFITTE, LOUISIANA — A hoverboard that was plugged in to charge the battery exploded and set fire to a family's house in Lafitte, Louisiana, WGNO reported. On November 20, Hayden Horne, 12, opened his birthday present and was delighted to try out his new hoverboard that his mother, Jessica Horne, bought on Amazon from a company called Fit Turbo. He rode it around, but when it ran out of battery power the next day, he plugged it in using the charger that came with it. His mother walked by the boy's room only to see the hoverboard spark and catch fire in seconds. According to the GoFundMe page Horne started to help out with expenses related to the fire, she wrote that within minutes the whole room was on fire. Horne also wrote about the incident on Facebook, saying the firefighters responded to the blaze in minutes and rescued her dog, which was trapped inside. The use of hoverboards in public has been banned in New York City and in London. According to a CNN report, nearly 90 percent of the hoverboards imported into Britain have been recalled because of the risk of explosion or electrocution. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Singapore's Math Olympiad problem confuses everyone

01:58
A logical reasoning question for 14-year-olds in the Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad has gone viral after a TV presenter posted it on Facebook, leaving many people across the globe stumped. The mind-boggling question states that two boys, Albert and Bernard, became friends with a girl called Cheryl and wanted to know her birthday. Cheryl gave them ten possible dates, including May 15, May 16, May 19, June 17, June 18, July 14, July 16, August 14, August 15 and August 17. Then, she told Albert and Bernard the month and day of her birthday respectively. The question continues and states that Albert is not sure about her birthday yet but certain that Bernard, who was told the day, does not know either. From this, it is possible to eliminate the two unique dates, May 19 and June 18. If Cheryl had told Albert her birthday was in May or June then these two dates would still be valid. But Albert knows that Bernard does not know her birthday so this means she must have told Albert that the month is either July or August. Bernard then says he has deducted the answer from the five remaining dates. It is impossible that the day of Cheryl’s birthday is 14 because if this was the case, there would be two possible dates, July 14 and August 14, and Bernard would not be able to ascertain the answer. So, only three possible dates, July 16, August 15 and August 16 are left. Albert also obtains the answer after these clues. Since he only knows the month of Cheryl’s birthday, the answer must be July 16. If Cheryl told Albert she was born in August, Albert could not have deducted the answer because there would still be two possible dates. Henry Ong, executive director of the Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad, said the birthday question is a difficult one that aims to sift out the most intelligent students. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Plastic surgery: Patient attacked minutes after her nose job by jealous angry woman - TomoNews

01:13
GUANGXI, CHINA — Yangyang, a 24 soon to be college graduate, decided she wanted some plastic surgery to her face to make herself look perfect at graduation. Originally, from Jiangsu, she said it would also be a surprise to her family when she returned with a degree and looking like a supermodel. Yangyang also said that looking good would help her get a job after graduation. Yangyang had been wheeled into the recovery room and was checking out her new looks in the mirror when a strange woman wandering by asked her if she liked the results. Yangyang said she was pleased with the results and couldn’t wait for the swelling to go down. Then the stranger attacked Yangyang, punching her repeatedly in the face until nurses were able to subdue the attacker. Hospital staff later explained to police that the 30 year old woman was a disgruntled patient who’d had some work done 5 years ago. Dissatisfied with the results the woman would often return to the hospital to cuss out and slander the doctor who’d worked on her. That day, the doctor wasn’t in the office, so the stranger apparently decided to take out her rage on poor Yangyang. Thankfully for Yangyang, the damage was superficial and only left mild bruising. Yangyang pressed charges against the woman and the hospital increased security. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Leukemia treatment breakthrough: Gene-edited immune cells clear baby girl's cancer - TomoNews

01:55
LONDON — A baby girl in Britain suffering from leukemia has become the first person in the world to receive an experimental gene editing procedure that miraculously reversed her cancer. According to CBS News, Layla Richards had been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) when she was just 14-week-old. Layla's family was losing hope after several failed treatments, until a team of doctors at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital performed an experimental gene editing procedure on her that saved her life. This technology is known as TALEN, which had only been previously tested on mice. It uses molecular tools that act like scissors to cut specific genes in order to make the T-cells from healthy donors to behave in two specific ways: first, the cells are able to become invisible to a powerful leukemia drug that would normally kill them; second, they are reprogrammed to target and fight against leukemia cells only. Layla spent several months in isolation due to her extremely weak immune system after the procedure. After the leukemia cells were confirmed to have been eliminated from Layla's body, she was given a bone marrow transplant to replace her entire blood and immune system, CBS News reported. The treatment was prepared by scientists at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College London and French biotech company Cellectis. Cellectis is going to fund full clinical trials of the therapy starting next year, Reuters reported. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Water on Mars: New NASA study suggests Red Planet once had more water than Earth’s Arctic Ocean

01:42
New research by NASA indicates a primitive ocean on Mars once held more water than the Earth’s Arctic Ocean. Some 4.3 billion years ago, Mars was a far wetter place with five million cubic miles (20 million cubic kilometers ) of water, according to a team of scientists. The researchers believe that this water was not spread evenly across the planet, but rather, collected in the northern hemisphere's Northern Plains. Mars ancient ocean likely covered 19 percent of its surface and in some places went down up to a mile deep. This body of water would have been larger than the Earth's Arctic Ocean, covering a relative area comparable to the Atlantic Ocean, which occupies 17 percent of the Earth’s surface. The Red Planet is believed to have had a volume of water 6.5 times greater than what is in the ice caps today, indicating a massive loss of water into space. Researchers discovered one of the major differences between ancient and modern Mars to be their respective water molecules. Water, ordinarily H2O, has another variant, HDO, which consists of a hydrogen atom, an oxygen atom, and a deuterium atom, which replaces the second hydrogen atom. Deuterium is a heavy isotope of hydrogen, that has a neutron in its nucleus. By comparing the ratio of HDO to H20 in water found on Mars today, water that was trapped in a Mars meteorite dating back some 4.5 billion years, scientists were able to determine how much water had escaped into space. This measurement process took nearly six years to map out. As since these heavier water molecules do not escape from the atmosphere as easily as ordinary water molecules, the planet has less light water compared to heavy water. Here on Earth, the HDO/H20 ratio is 1:3,200, but on Mars it is 1:400. This ratio indicates that Mars has lost 87 percent of its water. This not only indicates that Mars once had more water, but was wetter for a longer time. "With Mars losing that much water, the planet was very likely wet for a longer period of time than was previously thought,” said Senior Goddard scientist Michael Mumma, according to a NASA press release. “Suggesting it might have been habitable for longer.” ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Missing person case solved: veteran's car, remains found at bottom of Lake Rhodhiss, NC - TomoNews

01:08
CALDWELL COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA — The remains of missing Air Force veteran Amos Shook, 44, who disappeared 43 years ago, have been discovered along with his car at the bottom of Lake Rhodhiss in North Carolina. The cold case was reopened when Shook's daughter contacted the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department last month. They had no clues, but then they stumbled on the 1968 Pontiac Catalina 30 feet below the surface of the lake using sonar and a diving team. Inside the car were what authorities believe to be the remains of Shook, along with his wallet. Authorities don't believe it was a suicide, or that there was any foul play involved in the death or disappearance, and the case is considered closed. But there are still some unanswered questions. Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones was quoted in a press conference as saying: "Finding somebody that's still alive that could answer those, will be tough." ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Seed bomb drones: UK-based start-up to plant one billion trees in one year using drones

01:09
Oxford-based start-up Biocarbon Engineering is planning to fight industrial deforestation by planting 1 billion trees a year using drones. Currently, 26 billions trees are cut down every year, while only 15 billions are replanted. The drones used by Biocarbon Engineering could solve the problem by making tree planting faster and cheaper. In a video made by the company, Biocarbon Engineering explains that the drones would first fly above a selected area, map its level of deforestation and report back its potential for reforestation. Then, automated planting drones carrying seed pods would fly one to two metres above the ground, following a pre-determined planting pattern, and fire germinated seeds into the soil. A small pressurized canister would provide the necessary propulsive force for the seed pods to easily penetrate the soil surface. The seed pods, filled with nutritious hydrogel to reduce the force of the seed’s impact with the soil, would then break open upon impact and allow the germinated seeds to grow. According to the Independent, one drone is able to plant 10 seeds per minute. With two operators controlling multiple drones, 36,000 trees could be planted in a single day. Biocarbon Engineering hopes to have the system fully working by the end of the summer. According to the Independent, the drone system is not as good as hand-sowing, but it’s much quicker and less expensive than traditional planting systems. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Supermoon lunar eclipse: September 27 to see rare blood supermoon and lunar eclipse - TomoNews

02:03
WASHINGTON D.C. — A supermoon lunar eclipse, a phenomenon which last occurred more than three decades ago, will be visible to people in the Americas on September 27 and visible to those in Western Europe and parts of Africa early on September 28. A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth and moon align to form an exact or near-exact straight line, with the Earth in the middle. The technical term for this alignment is "syzygy", which in Greek means being paired together. While in syzygy, the Earth casts its shadow on the moon's surface. The Earth's shadow is made of an outer part called the Penumbra, a darker, central part called the Umbra, and the Antumbra, an lighter area beyond the Umbra. On September 27, the lunar eclipse will be total, meaning the moon will completely enter the Umbra for one hour and 12 minutes. The moon will not turn completely dark, however. Rather, it will turn reddish, as if hit by sunlight bent by the Earth's atmosphere, a phenomenon known as a blood moon. At the same time, another phenomenon known as a perigee supermoon will also occur. At 252,000 miles from Earth, the moon will be at its apogee, its furthest point from Earth. At its perigee, its closest point to our planet, it is about 226,000 miles away. On September 27, the moon will be at perigee and will appear to be about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than an apogee full moon. This rare supermoon total lunar eclipse, which has occurred only five times since 1900, will be 100 percent visible from start to end in some parts of North America, in all of South America, in Western Europe and western Africa. The event will not be visible in East Asia. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Giant black hole 12 billion times bigger than the sun is baffling scientists

01:24
The discovery of a giant black hole which is growing faster than usual challenges our current theories of black hole expansion. Led by Xue-Bing Wu of China's Peking University, a team of scientists detected a giant black hole they have named SDSS J010013.021280225.8. Though it is not the biggest black hole ever found, it is the biggest one detected in terms of luminosity: 40,000 times more bright than our solar system, the Milky Way, said Avi Loeb, Chair of the Department of Astronomy of Harvard University in an interview with National Geographic. He was not involved in this research. Apart from its size, what is astonishing is that it was formed only 875 million years after the big bang—a relatively short period for a black hole to grow to such a massive size. Scientists are are not certain what accounts for the black hole's rapid development, but one of the possibilities is that two black holes collided when the universe was very young. A black hole starts to form when the core of a dying star loses nuclear fuel, allowing gravity to overcome outward pressure. The core explodes and the star becomes a supernova. The black hole has such a powerful gravitational pull that nothing, including light, can escape. Yet, scientists can detect the existence of black holes from their quasars, a glow of radiating gas and matter. The black hole also absorbs other stars in its vicinity. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. NASA Dawn mission to Ceres set to unlock secrets of mysterious ‘dwarf planet’

01:19
NASA’s Dawn spacecraft is currently on its way to the asteroid belt where it will rendezvous Ceres, its largest celestial body. Ceres, also classified as a dwarf planet, has an average diameter of about 950 km (590 miles) making it comparable in scale to the U.S. state of Texas. Dawn captured the first image of Ceres on December 1. At just 9 pixels in width, the tiny photo was taken at a distance of about 1.2 million kilometers (740,000 miles), roughly three times the distance between Earth and the moon. On January 13 Dawn observed the object for one hour, capturing images of roughly half its surface area, including an intriguing white spot. The spacecraft is expected to deliver much higher resolution images as it flies ever closer to Ceres. The $466 million Dawn mission launched by NASA in September 2007 aims to study not only the dwarf planet, but also protoplanet Vesta. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Backpackers abused in Australia: Working holiday visas exploited by Aussie employers - TomoNews

01:22
After years of complaints Australia’s government has finally admitted after an investigation that farms and factories have been exploiting unskilled workers with 417 working holiday visas. The 417 working holiday visa has attracted more than a quarter million visitors since it began, and was intended as a cultural exchange program for backpackers and international students looking to travel to Australia or extend their visas. The working holiday visa allows individuals to stay for up to 6 months and seek employment in unskilled or low-skilled jobs such as fruit picking or meat packaging. Unfortunately, unscrupulous corporations are taking advantage of migrant workers. Migrant workers are often paid less than minimum wage, women are often sexually harassed or assaulted, and some are solicited for sex in order to obtain a visa extension. Migrant workers are often treated differently from their Australian passport holding co-workers. Some companies provide Australian employees overnight sleeping quarters but migrant workers are often only given a pallet on the floor in a main room. For those migrant workers who dare to complain, they’re quickly fired and their visas revoked. The 417 visa system has been severely corrupted and needs a complete overhaul. Burned alive: New video from Taiwan's deadly Formosa Water Park fire - TomoNews

01:27
NEW TAIPEI CITY, TAIWAN — An explosion at Formosa Water Park in New Taipei City, Taiwan has left 498 people with burns to their body, 202 in critical condition and one 20-year-old female partygoer dead. The fireball occurred at a Color Play Asia party, where colored powder was being sprayed into the crowd. The powder is flammable and authorities investigating the incident say that it might have been ignited by the heat from the state lights, someone in the crowd smoking a cigarette, or any kind of spark. The organizer of the event and two technicians were arrested in response to the accident, and have since been released on bail. The organizer of the party Lu Chung-chi has taken full responsibility for the accident. The only reported death so far is a 20-year-old woman who was taken off of life support on Monday after suffering second degree burns to 90 percent of her body. In the aftermath of the explosion, colored powder has been banned from parties. Doctors are worried that some partygoers inhaled the powder, which may eventually cause respiratory problems. Skin grafts are being sent from around Taiwan to assist with the large number of burn victims at Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei. The water park has subsequently closed out of respect for the victims, while an investigation is ongoing. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Airplane near miss: Air France jet nearly crashes into Mount Cameroon in central Africa - TomoNews

01:10
DOUALA, CAMEROON — An Air France jet traveling from Malabo, Equatorial Guinea to Douala, Cameroon nearly hit central Africa’s tallest mountain on May 2. Flight AF953 changed course and turned north mid-flight to avoid storm clouds that were in its original flightpath. The Boeing 777’s new flightpath directed the plane towards the 4,090-metres-tall Mount Cameroon. Flying at 2,743 metres, the plane ascended sharply to 3,962 metres and narrowly missed the mountain. An initial report by France's BEA air accident agency says that as the plane neared the mountain, the aircraft issued an automated warning that told the pilots to take immediate action. AF953 was carrying 23 passengers, three pilots and 10 crew members. After a preliminary investigation, Air France said crew members acted in accordance with their training. However, all have been taken off flying duties to undergo more training. Air France says that the passengers weren’t aware of what was going on in the cockpit during the flight. The BEA is investigating the near-accident as a ‘serious incident.’ ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Idiot Abroad: Unruly British expat berates Singapore man over F--ing t-shirt - TomoNews

01:54
And it’s a realization which came slightly too late to this expat commuter who harassed a young man on the Singapore subway. The expat targeted the young man for his t-shirt, which read “I’m so f---ing special.” The aggressor, who speaks with a British accent, demands the young man get off the train, until a bystander, whose name is either Loony or Elfy, bravely steps in and calls the jerk out. When the police show up, our unnamed antagonist realizes that, like an outbreak of crabs, people kind of really want him gone, and he gets off the train. But being a terrible person doesn’t end there, because he continues to complain to the police about the t-shirt. Elfy/Loony has kept up his everyday-hero routine, posting on his Facebook that people shouldn’t stoop to race baiting the aggressor in the wake of the incident. No information has emerged about the belligerent, and although he looks old enough to miss the British Raj, Winston Churchill he definitely isn’t, so maybe he should just shut the hell up. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Korean Air 'nut rage' outburst: Heather Cho Hyun-ah sentenced to 1 year in prison for cover-up

01:26
A former Korean Air vice president who drew worldwide ridicule last year when she ordered a passenger jet back to its gate after becoming enraged at the manner in which she was served macadamia nuts is headed to prison for one year for violating aviation safety law. Heather Cho Hyun-ah was sentenced February 12 in a Seoul court room for the December 5 tantrum in which she berated and assaulted the flight's chief air steward Park Chang-jin who had, without request, brought her macadamia nuts served in a bag rather than in a bowl. During sentencing the judge noted Cho's appeared insincere in her apologies, as she defended her actions telling the court she lived for her work. The episode reportedly deeply shamed her father, Korean Air chairman father, Cho Yang-ho and shocked and disgusted most ordinary Koreans. Many large businesses in South Korea, a country with a rigid social hierarchy, are family-run, and these elites often view themselves as untouchable. Ms Cho could consider herself lucky — prosecutors were seeking three years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. NFL concussions: 96% of former NFL players tested had CTE brain disease - TomoNews

01:30
BOSTON — A study by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Boston University found that 87 out of 91 former NFL players tested, suffered from a brain disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is a brain disease that researchers believe to be caused by repetitive head trauma. Brain scans can detect signs of CTE, but it can only be confirmed posthumously. The disease causes a protein called tau to form around blood vessels in the frontal lobe. During stage two, sufferers may experience rage, impulsivity, or depression. Symptoms of stage three include confusion and memory loss as the tau protein spreads to other parts of the brain. Stage four is marked by dementia, as nerve cells in the brain die. During the final stages of CTE, the brain withers to roughly half the size of a normal brain. A federal judge has approved a $1 billion settlement between the NFL and thousands of ex-players. The money will go toward medical exams and concussion research among payment for damages. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. China Airlines failure to reassure passengers trapped in Singapore airport - TomoNews

01:40
SINGAPORE - Two hundred and forty-four passengers were trapped in the Singapore airport after China Airlines played passenger shuffle for nearly 10 hours. A China Airlines flight bound for Taiwan from Singapore was delayed after the captain deboarded the flight due to a computer warning. Passengers were then reboarded 3 hours after the original flight departure time and then deboarded again when the computer warning continued to flash. China Airlines then provided food vouchers for all the passengers while they waited for maintenance to attempt to fix the plane. Eight and a half hours later, China Airlines attempted to reboard the 244 passengers, but some refused, saying they were afraid to board the defective plane. In the end China Airlines promised to have a second plane flown in to replace the defective one, but it wouldn’t arrive until the next morning. Passengers were put up in the airport business hotel on China Airlines’s dime, but woke up to discover the arrival of the new plane had been delayed. Finally, more than 24 hours later, the 244 passengers trekked off the China Airlines flight at Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan. China Airlines refunded half of all the passengers’s tickets and provided gift bags in an attempt to apologize. Still, many of the passengers said there was no way they were going to fly China Airlines ever again and some even said they’d rather die than go back to Singapore. But um…. it’s not Singapore’s fault, CA is a Taiwanese airline! ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. China's air pollution reaches red alert, here's how people are coping - TomoNews

02:10
BEIJING — Air quality problems are nothing new in China, but people have come up with some interesting and unusual ways to breathe cleaner air in the midst of high levels of air pollution. China's government issued the first air quality red alert last Tuesday, Bloomberg reported. They urge citizens not to go outside, and to take public transportation if possible to cut down on the amount of pollutants being pumped into the atmosphere. People wearing face masks is pretty common in Asia, but there are some different takes on the dust mask, or surgical mask, including nasal air filters like the Infipure invisible air pollution mask. Artists have also developed healthy breathing solutions like the breathing bicycle, designed by British artist Matt Hope, which uses the energy produced from pedaling to filter the air, and pump it into a mask worn by the person riding the bike. Chinese artist Chih Chiu created another creative way to breathe clean air by attaching a mask to a backpack that has a plant in it producing pure oxygen. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Kidnapped child saved: Hero pizza shop worker sees Amber Alert, saves Texas boy - TomoNews

01:05
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — The family of a kidnapped south Texas 7-year-old have an unlikely hero to thank after an alert employee at a Corpus Christi pizza shop helped identify the vehicle of the boy’s abductor last week, according to a KRISTV.com report. Courtney Best, 26, stepped out of the Papa Murphy's Pizza store where she worked last Thursday for what was supposed to have been a routine smoke break, but turned out to be anything but. The restaurant supervisor received an Amber Alert for a missing boy on her phone at virtually the same moment, as luck would have it, she saw a white car fitting the exact description of the abductor's vehicle pulling into her restaurant's parking lot. Best next spotted the apparent suspect as he walked with a scared-looking little boy into a nearby store and instantly sprung into action. "The man was walking across the parking lot, looking at me because I was the only person out here with the little boy. (The boy) looked scared," Best told the local station. "My stomach started knotting up, so I was like, ahh, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna check and see." She next carefully checked the car’s license plate before calling police who promptly arrested the suspect, one Channing Galbraith, and saved the young boy, Nicholas Gomez, who had been abducted from his home the day before. Galbraith reportedly remains in the slammer and faces charges related to the alleged abduction. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Plane hacking: Security expert Chris Roberts grounded from United flights after tweet

01:16
Chris Roberts, a top airplane computer systems security expert has been banned from flying on United Airlines flights after posting a tweet mid-flight that made it seem to FBI officials that he was trying to deploy the plane's oxygen masks by hacking into its computer via the on-board wifi. He was only joking, but as we all know, the Feds have no sense of humor about these matters. Agents greeted him at the next airport totally unamused. Roberts has publicly admonished Airbus and Boeing about the lack of security between the in-flight wifi and entertainment systems and critical flight systems. He believes a very skilled hacker could appear to be a passenger getting work done, but in reality hacking into a jet's flight management systems, while keeping alarms for such things silenced. He ultimately made it to his destination aboard a Southwest Airlines jet, but still believes the airlines and aircraft makers should heed his warnings before a hypothetical disaster such as the one outlined, becomes a reality. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. The NSA may have a backdoor in your computer that you can’t get rid of

01:21
Russian security software maker Kaspersky Lab announced that a cyber espionage group, perhaps connected to the NSA, has developed a means to hide spying software within the hard drives of personal computers. Computers impacted include those manufactured by companies such as Western Digital and Seagate. The surveillance program is among several spy surveillance programs discovered by Kaspersky. Although Kaspersky did not say specifically who planted the software, they said the program is closely linked to Stuxnet, an NSA-related cyberweapon that was used to attack Iran’s uranium enrichment facility. The spies were able to access source codes for computer hard drives, allowing the attackers to better understand and control computer systems. According to unnamed former intelligence operators who spoke with Reuters, NSA employees may have obtained the source codes by posing as software developers and asking manufacturers directly for the information. Knowing the source code allowed access to the drive, and spies were able to place spyware into the firmware. The corrupted firmware runs each time a computer is turned on. Firmware loads all the low-level drivers that manage a computer’s interfaces such as keyboards and displays before an operating system such as Windows is booted. As the firmware helps to manage the computer’s operating system, the malware is able to access many of the computer’s folders, file-systems and operating system components. Viruses in the firmware are usually undetectable, and as a consequence are difficult to remove. The surveillance software has been found on computers in 30 countries worldwide. Iran, Russia, Afghanistan, China, Mali, Pakistan, Syria, Yemen and Algeria were particularly targeted. Institutions of interest included government and military organizations, energy companies, Islamic activists and the media. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Public assault: Angry customer takes anger out on bus driver, driver retaliates - TomoNews

01:25
YELIU, TAIWAN - One customer on board a long distance bus ride in Taiwan lost it and took his anger out on the bus driver. That was a mistake. The customer, Mr. Yang, age 25, was complaining loudly that he was feeling motion sick. The bus driver stopped and asked the customers if anyone was feeling ill and needed a break, since no one-including Mr. Yang- spoke up the driver returned to driving the route. Upon arrival at their destination, Mr. Yang confronted the bus driver. Mr. Yang starts off by telling the bus driver that he sucks at his job and he shouldn’t even have a driver’s license. When the driver asks Mr. Yang why he didn’t speak up earlier Mr. Yang responds by slapping the driver in the face three times. The bus driver then unleashes the thunder and slams Mr. Yang in the face multiple times. In fact, Mr. Yang falls forward and is clinging to the steering wheel to stay upright as the driver pounds his face like a lump of stubborn dough. The driver then kicks Mr. Yang off the bus and punches him one more time for good measure. In a follow up investigation the driver’s actions were ruled as self-defense and Mr. Yang was ordered to issue a public apology and pay the driver USD $400 in compensation. Once he recovers from the brain damage we imagine Mr. Yang’ll be driving himself around. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. 360 Video - Take a ride on Elon Musk’s Hyperloop

01:29
Billionaire philanthropist Elon Musk hopes to introduce a new form of transportation to compete with planes and trains. The new technology, called Hyperloop, would consist of a tube with Concorde-like seating inside able to send passengers at 760 miles an hour on a cushion of compressed air. The tubes would be launched by a rail gun type launcher. The tube would shoot through an elevated structure with pods mounted above the ground on columns 50 to 100 yards (45 to 91 metres) apart or through an underground tunnel, using a maglev like system, like the "floating force" of an air hockey table. A proposed line from Los Angeles to San Francisco would cost $7.5 billion to build. The tubes would be at least three times faster than a bullet train and twice as fast as an airplane. Powered by solar technology, the transport would also be cheaper than conventional methods. The 'Hyperloop', designed to link cities less than 1,000 miles apart, could cover the distance between Los Angeles and San Francisco in about 35 minutes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Chinese 'super-city' of 130 million people to be built around Beijing - TomoNews

01:27
BEIJING — The Chinese government is embarking on an ambitious project to merge several megacities with the capital Beijing and create a super metropolis capable of housing as many as 130 million people, the New York Times reported. The megalopolis, called Jing-Jin-Ji, would link Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province, will be spread over 82,000 square miles, about six times the size of New York City, but with a population of as much as one third of the United States. The plan aims to revamp northern China's economy, by moving parts of Beijing's bureaucracy, factories and hospitals to the hinterland, while offering new services that are lacking in areas around Beijing such as bus terminals, schools, cinemas and parks. A subway and better light rail system are also under construction and will open in the next three to five years. A new bridge over the Chaobai River will connect to Beijing. With this new super city, the Chinese government aims to assign new economic rules to the cities: Beijing will focus on culture and technology, Tianjin will become a research base for manufacturing and Hebei will more likely focus on minor industries, such as textiles. The entire project, which has the support of President Xi Jinping, is likely to see a deep reconsideration of how taxes are collected and distributed within the territory, which would mean instituting property taxes and allowing local governments to keep them. "This is a huge project and is more complicated than roads and rail," Wang Hu, a historian of Beijing's development was quoted by the New York Times as saying. "But if it can succeed, it will change the face of northern China." ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Accidental shooting: Idiot firing AK-47 at Iraqi wedding blows man's head off - TomoNews

01:57
IRAQ — The horrifying moment a wedding guest accidentally shot a man in the head as he fired celebratory gunshots into the air has been captured on film. The footage, filmed at an unknown location in Iraq, depicts a joyful scene which quickly turns to devastation, the Mirror reported. A man with an AK-47 is seen pointing the assault rifle into the air and firing a burst of shots one-handed, before losing control of the weapon and shooting an unknown victim standing directly in front of him. Firing celebratory shots into the air is a Middle Eastern wedding tradition that can sometimes lead to tragic circumstances. In 2012 more than 20 guests at a wedding in Saudi Arabia died after celebratory shots brought down an electric cable, the Mirror reports. Drone vs Shotgun: Kentucky father blasts 'creepy' camera drone out of sky - TomoNews

01:55
HILLVIEW, KENTUCKY — A man was arrested on Sunday, July 30 for shooting a small camera drone out of the sky after he says it flew over his private property. William Meredith, of Hillview, claims that on the afternoon of July 30, his kids and a neighbor complained about a drone flying around the neighborhood and perhaps, some thought, taking pictures of sunbathing teenage girls. Meredith at first says he was reluctant to become involved but when the drone flew over his property, he says he then took action, firing a shotgun at the drone which then fell from the sky. The drone's operator, David Boggs, told local news station WDRB.com that almost everything Mr. Meredith claims is false. He showed the station a iPad app that tracked the flightpath of the drone that day and if the information is correct, it does indicate the drone was not flying over private property or engaged in nefarious activities. Boggs says he and friends were practicing flying so that he could film his children riding motocross. Boggs also produced a text message from the same afternoon which apparently corroborates his account as the message shows friends contacting him regarding the drone flying practice session. William Meredith was charged with first-degree criminal mischief and wanton endangerment for shooting the gadget but Mrs. Meredith told the media that these types of incidents could be avoided by adopting new laws and regulations for private remotely operated aircraft that are increasingly filling the skies. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. World's first head transplant planned by doctor who compares himself to Frankenstein - TomoNews

02:13
ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND — An Italian neuroscientist who claimed he could transplant a human head to a donor body admitted he actually did not know how to perform a head transplant and asked for help from America during a rambling presentation before a prestigious conference of surgeons in Maryland on Friday. Sergio Canavero gave his presentation at a joint meeting of the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons and International College of Surgeons, at which the man who has volunteered to have his head transplanted by Canavero, Russian computer scientist Valery Spiridonov, was present. Spiridonov suffers from a rare genetic muscle wasting disease and says he wants the chance to have a new body before he dies. Canavero's plan, as detailed in the online journal Surgical Neurology International, is to cool Spiridonov's head to help the brain survive when it is removed from its blood supply. The head's blood vessels would be cut and attached to a donor body. The spinal cord would then be cut with an ultra-sharp nano blade that would sever the nerve fibers without crushing them. Spiridonov's head would then be connected to the donor body. Finally, polyethylene glycol would be used to fuse the two ends of the spinal cords together. During his rambling 2 1/2 hour presentation on Friday, according to NBC News, Canavero compared himself to Dr. Frankenstein and asked his audience to "suspend all judgment." It was only during the last 10 minutes that he admitted that he did not know how to perform a head transplant. He did not explain how he could quickly re-establish blood supply to his patient's brain, which can only survive for a few minutes without a blood supply. Nor did he say how he would awaken his patient from a coma. "Let's suspend all judgment," Canavero said. "What you have been taught is wrong." Spiridonov, who watched the proceedings from a mobilized wheelchair, looked confused, NBC reports. Canavero suggested getting a billionaire to fund his experiment. "I am asking you, Americans, to make your contribution," he said. "I have a detailed plan to do it." ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Leap second: June will be one second longer this year, problems with Linux, Java expected - TomoNews

01:16
PARIS, FRANCE — The world is preparing to add a leap second at the end of June to synchronize the world's clocks with the Earth's rotation. The leap second was scheduled by the Paris Observatory to compensate for the slowing of the Earth's rotation on June 30, when clock dials will read 23:59:60 to synchronize atomic time with the Earth's rotation. The leap second was first introduced in 1972 and it has been used 25 times since then. The most recent leap second was added in 2012, when several websites including including Reddit, Yelp and Linkedin reported crashes and problems with the Linux operating system and programs written in Java. There are fears that similar Internet problems could reoccur on June 30, and markets, especially in Australia, are wary of possible mishaps when the leap second is added. Google has developed a special method to handle the leap second. It gradually adds milliseconds to its system clocks during a 20-hour smear window prior to the arrive of the leap second. "At the end of the smear window, the entire leap second has been added, and we are back in sync with civil time," the company said in a blog post. Web businesses have been the main opponents of the leap second, which scientists say is essential for research purposes. Members of the International Telecommunications Union will meet later this year to determine whether to scrap the leap second permanently. If so, experts say atomic time could slip up to three minutes ahead of the Earth's rotation by 2100, and about 30 minutes by 2700. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Sexually assaulted former Air Force captain Jamie Brunette driven to suicide, family say

01:41
Family members of an Air Force Reserve captain who apparently committed suicide earlier this month believe she was sexually assaulted during her time in Afghanistan. Tampa, Florida police found former Air Force Captain Jamie Brunette’s dead body in the back of her locked sedan near her apartment on February 9th. They say the 30-year-old bought the suicide weapon, a Smith & Wesson .380, six months ago. Brunette had been on active duty for 11 years before joining the Air Force Reserves last June. Jackie Leverich, Brunette's oldest sister says she noticed something was different about Brunnette while they were both attending their sister's wedding. While she doesn’t have any proof, Leverich, who’s on active duty with the Coast Guard, says she believes her sister was sexually assaulted while she served in Afghanistan. Two weeks before her suicide, Brunette ended her relationship with her boyfriend. The week before her death, Brunette seemed in good spirits and posted photos to Facebook, of the fitness studio she was building. Friends and family say she was excited to be a owner/instructor of her new business venture. While he failed to provide details, when referring to a possible incident, Brunette’s business partner, Lt. Col Kurt Spranger, told the Tampa Tribune that “something happened, something that should never happen to a human”. A ‘Go Fund Me’ page has been set up for Brunette’s funeral. DIY fail: Man cuts off hand with power saw, 'wasn't even aware' it was gone - TomoNews

01:14
A retired headteacher who cut off his hand with a power saw luckily has some really great neighbors who rushed to his aid when the accident occurred. Edryd Jones was home alone cutting some wood for his bedroom ceiling last October when he sliced off an enormous chunk of his left hand with the saw. "I didn't realise my hand had gone until I went to pick up a piece of wood and it wasn't there. It was on the floor," said Edryd. The 69-year-old grandfather then made his way downstairs and then walked over to his neighbor's house. Using a belt, they made a makeshift tourniquet. The neighbors helped Jones retrieve his severed hand and put it on ice until the ambulance could take him to the hospital. After a nine-hour long operation, surgeons were able to reattach Jones' hand. Jones just started physiotherapy and has some movement back in his left hand. He's now also driving again. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. A manhunt is underway in South Los Angeles after two police officers were injured in a shooting Sunday evening. Two plainclothes LAPD officers were driving an unmarked vehicle near the intersection of LA's Broadway and West 65th Street Sunday evening. At around 5:45 p.m., two men opened fire on the officers from a distance. The police officers then returned fire. Both officers suffered minor injuries. Dozens of SWAT deputies and police dogs are aiding in the search for the two suspects. Police officers have secured a perimeter from Gage Avenue to 67th Street and Broadway to Main Street as part of their ongoing manhunt. At around 2:15 a.m. on Monday, a driver, possibly under the influence, drove into the perimeter and almost struck a police officer. World’s deadliest spiders found in banana: Mom finds Brazilian wandering spiders in Tesco fruit

01:15
A Bristol, UK woman found an unwanted -- and potentially deadly -- companion in the bag of bananas her husband bought from Tesco, SWNS reports. Maria Layton, 43, reportedly found a nest of Brazilian wandering spiders as she was about to hand a banana to her 6-year-old daughter. “I was so scared,” Layton said in an interview. “I don’t like spiders at the best of times, but have read about the Brazilian wandering spiders - and was very frightened about the potential threat.” The Brazilian wandering spider has the most toxic venom in the world, according to the 2010 Guinness World Records. Its bite can cause painful hours-long erections, pain, inflammation, paralysis and even death. Layton said she put the store-bought bananas in the freezer because she had read that kills them. When she reported her finding to Tesco, the company told her to return the bananas to the store for a refund. “Tesco were a bit useless,” Layton said. “I was really concerned about the possibility of this dangerous spider and spider eggs in my house and really wanted some helpful advice on how to act.” The spiders likely infested the bananas in Costa Rica, where Tesco buys its bananas. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Concealed Carry: Waffle House robber in S.C. dead after good guy with a gun shoots him - TomoNews

01:19
CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA — A would-be robber in South Carolina is dead after he picked the wrong Waffle House. Authorities say early on the morning of October 3, 2015, a 19-year-old man identified as Joshua Jermaine Davis entered a Waffle House on Dorchester Road in Charleston, South Carolina intending to commit robbery. A customer having an early morning breakfast at the eatery just so happened to have a concealed carry permit, and the unidentified individual decided to intervene by shooting the would-be robber an unknown number of times. Davis was rushed to Medical University Hospital where he later died. Restaurant employees told local newspaper the Post and Courier that the customer saved them. It is unclear what type of kind of weapon the suspect may have used in the attempted robbery, or if he was carrying a weapon at all. The restaurant reopened a short time after the incident and a local division manager for the restaurant chain, Brandon Rogers, said nothing was stolen and it was the first time he was aware of a crime occurring at this particular branch. "No one was hurt, which is the best part," Rogers said, before continuing, "No one was injured, besides the suspect." Police say the customer will not be charged at this time as he possessed a legal permit for his weapon and acted within legal parameters for the use of deadly force. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
