The Quint: Bankrupt Pakistan Film Industry Resumes Screening of Indian Cinema

02:07
Cinemas in Pakistan resumed the screening of Indian movies from Monday, following a self-imposed ban. Representatives of major cinema houses said that they had only suspended the screening of Indian films but had not completely banned them. They added that the resumption is important to ensure cinemas remain financially viable. The first film to be screened will be actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Freaky Ali. On September 30, Pakistani cinemas' owners announced their decision to indefinitely cease the screening of all Indian films as a protest against the ban of Pakistani artists in India and to show solidarity with the armed forces of Pakistan. The response to the decision of cinema owners was mixed. Filmmakers and actors welcomed the decision, saying that art transcends boundaries. Indian movies returned to Pakistani cinema houses in 2008 after a 43-year-long hiatus imposed during the 1965 war. The Quint: Assume Everything’s Hacked Already: Ethical Hacker Saket Modi

02:55
2016 has brought one bad news after the other. On the world wide web, hackers have created a ruckus. This was without any doubt, the year of Cyber Attacks and Online Hacking. From the privacy of millions of Yahoo accounts getting compromised to high profile Indian twitter accounts getting hacked by Legion, internet suddenly appears extremely unsafe. The Quint spoke to Saket Modi, ethical hacker and founder of a privacy solutions company on how to safeguard your online identity. How To Keep Yourself Safe Online? Use a secure web browser such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or TOR. Only make financial transactions on sites that have ‘https’ preceding the URL. Do not download anything from torrent or pornographic sites. Use a strong alphanumeric password with special characters for all accounts. Do not repeat passwords across multiple accounts. Saket’s company Lucideus Tech has also worked on building security infrastructure for NPCI’s Unified Payment Interface or UPI. In the wake of demonetization, he highly recommends UPI to make digital transactions over any digital wallet. “UPI requires a cell phone to make a successful payment and packs in three factor authentication, making it the safest way to transfer funds online”, says Modi. First factor of authentication is your mobile number that is verified using a one time password. Second factor of authentication is the username and password used for net-banking. Third and final factor of authentication is your UPI identification and PIN. Even if your phone is lost and somebody get their hands on your unlocked handset, they cannot go through with a transaction without the knowledge of this UPI PIN, making it quite secure. The days of reckless gallivanting across the deep abyss called the internet are behind us. 2016 changed that in an irreversible manner. Every click and double tap is being watched. This is the new reality. Better get used to it. The Quint: These Girls From Pakistan Have Overcome Obstacles to Pursue Boxing

02:36
In the poor locality of Lyari in Karachi, Pakistan, many girls have overcome several societal obstacles to pursue their passion for boxing. The Young Lyari Health and Boxing Club in the city has become a hub for more than two dozen determined young female boxers, where they are seen quickly changing from their traditional clothing to don tracksuits for training. 16-year-old Sarah Baloch, who became the inspiration for many other girls to join the club, harbours dreams of playing at the Olympics one day. If that dream is realised, it would make her the first ever woman boxer from the country to take part in the mega sporting event. These girls believe that boxing should not be the confine of men. Anisa Asghar, one of the aspiring boxers in the locality, points out that people who disallow women to participate in sporting activities are wrong in their thinking. While the community of Lyari has taken great strides in terms of promoting boxing for women, it still constitutes an isolated case. As is claimed by Doda Khan Bhutto, the President of Pakistan Boxing Federation, himself, the country still suffers from a lack of funds and infrastructure when it comes to boxing - thereby making the sport to be a distant dream for many Pakistani girls. In the last 50 days of demonetisation, the Modi government has introduced, scrapped or altered more than 60 rules. For example, at first we were allowed to exchange old notes up to a certain limit, the limit was then reduced and finally scrapped. The same applies to the constantly flexible limit on cash withdrawals. Understandably, it’s left many feeling confused and insecure about how to access their own hard earned money. The Quint: An Acid Attack Survivor's Tryst with Beauty

04:54
On 12 May 2004, two men threw acid on Soniya Chaudhary's face. The attack was planned by her neighbour, Anurag. He had sold her a stolen mobile phone, and when the police rang the number she then possesed, Soniya innocently let it be known that she got the phone from him. But that's not what ticked Anurag off. He arranged for 5 litres of acid to be thrown on the college student - because she didn't apologise for his arrest. It took her nearly 3 years after the attack to get out of bed, and now she is rebuilding her life piece-by-piece. She was a part-time employee in an upscale salon before the attack, and now she runs her own beauty parlour out of her house in Ghaziabad. By her side is her daughter Vanshika, who she unofficially adopted from her sister. Just like her mother, this 7-year-old loves make-up and mirrors. The Quint talked to Soniya about what it has meant for a beautician and a self-confessed 'vain' person to look at her reflection - before the attack, right after the attack, after her first surgery, and now. The Quint: This Cancer Patient is Overwhelmed as Hundreds Queue up to Donate

It’s not everyday that we see something that restores our faith in humanity! However, this particular video - about 30-year-old Amanda Koefod from the US, who has been diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma (cancer) - happens to be one of those rare ones that narrate a tale people’s selfless love and generosity. While shooting a video appealing for funds as part of an online campaign, Amanda and her husband are taken by complete surprise when they see hundreds of people coming into a store to voluntarily donate money to fund her treatment. With a queue of people extending till outside the store, the couple are visibly overwhelmed with emotion. Now, this act of generosity - which managed to raise around 13,000 in the end - must have surely come as a relief for Amanda, who does not even have a health insurance. Reiterating the points he had made at his Goa and Gujarat rallies, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government have snatched the poor man’s hard-earned money by demonetising Rs 500 and 1,000 notes. Responding to Modi’s jibe at him at his Varanasi rally, Rahul Gandhi said, “I’m not posing this question to you, the youth and poor of the country have posed this question. You can make fun of me all you want, but you should answer my questions” He then repeated his earlier remarks about Modi “mocking” MNREGA and crippling the poor workers of the country and giving their money to the likes of Vijay Mallya and Lalit Modi. The Quint| Quint Rant: Sorry Hindu Mahasabha, But FB’s Got Tina Dabi’s Back

02:08
Aah, love! It blooms in Yash Chopra’s sarson ke khet – and it emerges out of – IAS training centres. Wait, what? In a love story almost too good to be true, Tina Dabi, the girl who ranked first in the 2015 UPSC exam is all set to marry the guy who ranked second in the same exam: Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan. Picture perfect, you think? We do too. Also Read: Hindu Mahasabha Calls Tina’s Decision to Marry Athar “Love Jihad” (Sigh), Now if only the Hindu Mahasabha would get in line! But, no. In a letter addressed to Dabi’s father, Mr Munna Kumar Sharma – the Mahasabha’s national general secretary – had THIS to say: Ab yeh mat socho, that the Mahasabha's a bunch of stingy uncles at a shaadi. No, they’re incredibly generous: they’ve offered to help in the re-conversion of the Kashmiri Muslim boy so that he can marry the Hindu girl. Once the ghar waapsi’s done, they will happily ‘support’ the marriage – because, of course, unke support ke bina toh shaadi ho hi nahi sakti! Dear Mr Sharma, and ALL of the Hindu Mahasabha: We have much to tell you and much to rant about, but instead of us doing the talking, why not just hear it from the 21st century? We posted Tina's story on The Quint and here's what the world of social media is telling you: Mr Sharma, ab toh appane sun liya, na? If you want us to summarise all of that for you, here’s the gist: Tina and Athar are self-respecting, independent individuals who live in the 21st century. They’ll marry who they want to, when they want to and how they want to. And they DO NOT need your vishesh tippani or your express sanction. Ab, Bollywood type ka love story hai, toh Bollywood lingo main hi samjhaate hai – miyan biwi raazi, toh kya karega qazi? Ab to aap samajh gaye, na? The Quint: Take A Hint: Lessons India Could Learn From Paris on Air Pollution

01:13
Air pollution isn’t just a problem in India, major capitals like Paris also fight off bad air quality. The difference is, things don’t have to get too extreme for the Parisian government to do something about it. When particles in the air reached unhealthy levels in Paris this week, the government had an action plan they immediately set in place. But that hasn’t been the case in India. After Diwali, air pollution levels in Delhi were more than 40 times worse than the air in Paris, but it took more than a week for the government to decide to implement measures like shutting down schools. So maybe it’s time for the Indian government to learn a few things from France. The Quint: India, Indonesia Ink 3 Pacts, Vow to Fight Terror, Human Trafficking

01:54
India and Indonesia on Monday signed three agreements following delegation-level talks here headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Indonesian President Joko Widodo. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that India and Indonesia have agreed to ensure safety and security of the sea lanes while prioritising defence and security cooperation. "As two important maritime nations that are also neighbours, we agreed to cooperate to ensure the safety and security of the sea lanes, in disaster response and environmental protection." Modi said that a joint statement on maritime cooperation signed after Monday's talks outlined "the agenda of our engagement in this field". "Our partnership will also extend to combating terrorism, organised crime, drugs and human trafficking," he stated. Besides the joint statement on maritime cooperation, the two sides also signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on cooperation in the areas of youth and sports, and standardisation. The agreement on maritime cooperation assumes significance as several Southeast Asian nations have problems with China over the South China Sea. The Quint| Watch: Bomb Attack Fails to Deter Aleppo’s Christmas Celebrations

01:38
A week after a ceasefire deal was reached for Syria's war-ravaged city of Aleppo, hundreds of residents in a western neighbourhood on Tuesday took part in Christmas festivities. But these were eventually disrupted by a bomb blast. The celebrations at the Al-Azizah neighbourhood in western Aleppo looked like a scene from any other city getting into the Christmas mood, until the bomb blast took place. The blast sent the otherwise excited and hopeful crowds gathered around a huge cypress Christmas tree into panic, though there were reportedly no casualties. What’s surprising is that people resumed the celebrations soon after the blast - perhaps a testament to the resilience of a city that has seen months of vicious fighting and umpteen deaths. Meanwhile, around the same time, eastern Aleppo continued to witness the evacuation of rebel fighters and civilians. After four years of intense battle, Syria’s government forces, with the help of Russia, recently scored a decisive victory over the rebels in eastern Aleppo. Looking at a huge number of civilian casualties and unprecedented damage to the city’s infrastructure, the UN had called the situation as “a complete meltdown of humanity”. Paul Breitner, who was part of the World Cup winning West Germany team in 1974, feels that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are not the best players in the world. The former Bayern Munich player said that Germany’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is the best player in the world because Neuer keeps at a much higher level as compared to other international goalkeepers. Whereas, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar are all at the same level. Paul Breitner had come to New Delhi on Saturday to select ten players who will represent India at the FC Bayern Youth Cup World Finals.
