Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991 by a suicide bomber of the LTTE. LTTE was a militant Tamil group, fighting for the rights of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Rajiv Gandhi had played an important role in the civil war between the Sinhalese and Tamils in Sri Lanka. The Indian government brokered a deal to end the tensions in the country. To this effect, the Indian - Sri Lanka peace accord was signed. The accord required that the Tamils lay down arms in exchange for better conditions and rights for them. Tamil groups were not happy with the situation.
An attempt was made on Rajiv Gandhi's life then too. He even lost power in the centre partly due to the developments.
The situation in Sri Lanka was also an issue in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
In 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was not in power, but was campaigning for the upcoming elections. The issue is Sri Lanka figured in his manifesto.
Yet, in the end he lost his life to the tensions in Sri Lanka. To this day, the issue is still a major one in Tamil politics in India.
Watch the whole story, of what exactly the issue is and how the developments came to be in this episode of Pradhanmantri.
