However, at times, babies become fussy and do not feel like sleeping at all. Parents often get concerned over their baby’s frequent awakenings, especially if their little one has started waking after sleeping through the night for a few weeks or months. Infant sleep problems can be frustrating and tiring as parents feel so helpless to fix them. Usually, there is nothing seriously wrong with infants who wake frequently in the night or don’t seem to sleep at all. It can be due to anything from thirst, hunger, tiredness, teething or colic. Once you fix the problem, your baby will sleep fine and so will you. Here are the top 10 common reasons why babies don’t sleep through the night. 1. Hunger and Thirst. 2. Needs a Sleep Prop. 3. If you’re interested in learning some awesome newborn baby sleep tips, then you are in the right place. When your baby sleeps better, you will notice a more patient, more tolerant, more engaging baby after a good nights rest or quality nap. Be encouraged. It’s never too late to foster excellent sleep habits in a baby, and ultimately help yourself get some much-needed rest as well. 1. Swaddle. From birth to about age four to five months, babies innately possess a startle reflex, in which they feel as if they are falling. The sensation of falling causes jerking movements and the baby will incidentally wake up. Keeping a tight swaddle prevents babies from startling themselves awake, helping the newborn baby sleep both better and longer. I like to think of the baby as ‘snug as a bug in a rug,’ and I used to tell my son this every time I’d swaddle him snugly. 2. Dream feed. The dream feed is the feeding given to the baby right before you go to bed, and it helps prevent the baby from waking up just after we moms finally drift off to sleep. Isn’t this the pinnacle of sleep deprivation? You just fall asleep and the baby wakes up. The dream feed can really help your newborn baby sleep for longer while you sleep. We used it until about age 4 months. 3. Limit the length of naps during the day. I know it’s hard to wake a sleeping baby, but sleeping too long of a stretch during the day can rob nighttime sleep. If the baby sleeps past the 2 – 2.5-hour mark, I would go ahead and wake the baby up, feed him, keep him awake for a bit, and then lay him down for another nap. If you feel the baby truly needs longer naps, feel free to increase the nap limit to 2.5 hours. Breaking up sleep during the day will help your newborn baby sleep better at night. 4. Use white noise. No one wants to miss a party, so if your baby is listening to all the fun going on in the house it can be hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. I place a fan on medium in the baby’s room rather than directly next to the baby, so it does not blow directly on him or sit too close to his sensitive ears. Using white noise also helps immensely when we are traveling! We are usually able to avoid asking friends or family to be quiet 🙂. 5. Use a pre-snap and bedtime routines. A bedtime routine would typically be a little longer and may include a bath, a massage, reading a story, offering a feeding, placing the baby in a wearable blanket or swaddle, turning on the white noise, a few cuddles, and saying your sleepy words. Following the same exact routine as consistently as possible cues the baby for sleep, and over time the baby will learn that sleep immediately follows the nap and bedtime routines. For a 150 lb. person, this amounts to about 11 percent of the recommended daily intake. Protein is essential for energy function, and also helps your body repair brain cells, notes Phyllis Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Protein's role in brain cell repair may help improve cognitive function, including memory. 2. Zinc. Zinc is a mineral that boosts immune system function, which may prevent bacterial and viral infections that can damage brain cells, according to Balch. This mineral is also an antioxidant and may protect brain cells from attack by free radical molecules and oxidated lipids in your bloodstream. These benefits of zinc may help maintain brain function and prevent memory loss. Vitamin B-6. A 1 oz. serving of almonds contains about 0.033 mg of vitamin B-6, which is about 3 percent of the recommended daily intake. Vitamin B-6, also called pyridoxine, aids the metabolism of proteins, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. This may increase the availability of proteins for brain cell repair. Vitamin B-6 also promotes the production of neurotransmitter chemicals, which improve communication between brain cells. 3. Vitamin E. Almonds also contain vitamin E. Studies show that this vitamin could help slow down the aging of cells such as those in the brain that could impact memory. High doses of vitamin E could result in serious consequences, however, so you should not take vitamin E supplements without consulting your doctor, explains the Alzheimer's Association. Perhaps you can't party as hard as you once did, and the hangovers are getting worse. Maybe you've developed a beer belly. Possibly, there's a deeper issue at play, and you don't want your drinking to get out of hand before it's a problem—unless it already is and you just don't realize it. Whatever your circumstances are, you're here, and you're ready to kick the sauce. Let's break down what happens to your body once you quit drinking. 1. It may get worse before it gets better: If you are a heavy drinker, you may not be out of the woods after 48 hours. Between 48-72 hours is generally when the onset of 'delirium tremens' occurs for some. Delirium tremens is sudden confusion that may be paired with hallucinations, shaking, irregular heart rate, and an increase in body temperature, so high that it can sometimes lead to seizures. If you are a heavy drinker, it is important to detox from alcohol under the supervision of a medical professional, as the withdrawal from quitting cold turkey can lead to death. 2. Physical symptoms will subside: While hangover and withdrawal symptoms can be uncomfortable, and at times dangerous, the good news is, that after peaking at around 72 hours after the last drink, the last of these symptoms will generally start to subside. At this stage, your body begins to create a new equilibrium, that does not include alcohol and its effects. 3. You'll sleep better: It may take a week or two, but after you quit drinking you'll ultimately sleep better. According to research, drinking increases brain wave patterns, that usually happen when you're awake. In normal deep sleep, the brain activity is in delta waves. Consuming alcohol causes brain activity during sleep to happen in alpha waves. Alpha waves are generally only seen in brain activity when we're awake, but resting. We all know that resting on the couch isn't the same thing, as getting a good night's sleep, so it's no wonder that people who drink regularly often feel tired and fatigued during the day. 4. You'll lose weight: If you stop drinking and change nothing else about your diet, or level of activity, you're likely to lose weight. It's partially the simple concept of calorie counting—alcohol, especially beer, contains a lot of calories. A single IPA may have as many as 200 calories, and a margarita could have roughly 300. If you suddenly drop hundreds of calories a day, the pounds will drop off over time. Plus, you'll overeat less. Research shows a link between alcohol consumption and heightened senses. Being intoxicated sends the hypothalamus in the brain into high gear, which makes the body more sensitive to food smells. That, combined with alcohol's famous ability to remove inhibitions, leads to extra eating. 5. Your skin will look better: Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it causes water to exit the body. Not so much "cause" as "force." In short, it's severely dehydrating. It decreases the production of a hormone that helps the body absorb and hold water. This is why water is needed during a hangover. Over time, less water in the body leads to noticeable effects, such as parched and dry-looking skin, rosy red cheeks, dandruff, and eczema.
