Establishing a school of medicine with the backing of two esteemed institutions will attract the best and brightest to the field of medicine in the State of New Jersey and help curb the critical physician shortage that the state and the nation currently face. By 2020, it is estimated there will be a shortage of 2,500 physicians in the Garden State. HackensackUHN and SHU’s joint venture to create a premier academic institution will help combat the physician shortage by providing key educational, research, and career opportunities to incentivize the next generation to pursue a career in medicine.

On May 13, 2015, Scott Solomon was driving on the Garden State Parkway when his vehicle flipped several times and landed on its side. Scott suffered severe facial injuries. The crew from AirMed One respond to transport Scott to HackensackUMC. His injuries were so severe that paramedics could not lie Scott down in the helicopter without jeopardizing his ability to breathe. Scott was instead transported by ambulance. When he arrived, the trauma team, led by Sanjeev Kaul, M.D., chief, and John LoCurto, M.D., assistant chief, provided life-saving care to Scott. Hakan Usal, M.D. was then able to reconstruct Scott's face.

Like any four year old, Kayden Kinckle loves to play. He's also fast as lightning, with or without legs. Three years ago, Kayden made national news when a video of his first steps went viral. Today, Kayden receives physical therapy twice a week at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital at HackensackUMC. In addition, a star of the hit television show, Empire - Jussie Smollett - was so taken with Kayden's strength and determination. The two recently spent a day together roaming around Manhattan and Kayden now considers Jussie to be on of his best friends.

Pancreatic Cancer: A Success Story

Anthony DelRusso was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. As part of his treatment, Marson T. Davidson, MD., FACS a board certified, fellowship trained surgical oncologist with Hackensack University Medical Center, performed a Whipple procedure to remove the cancerous tumor. Anthony then received chemotherapy under the direction of Martin Gutierrez, M.D., with the John Theurer Cancer Center. Anthony is now a five year cancer survivor.

HackensackUMC is proud to announce the first baby born in 2013 at the Donna A. Sanzari Women's Hospital. Elodie Ann Sadowski came into the world at 12:03 a.m. weighing 6 pounds 11 ounces and measuring 19 1/2" in length. She is the first baby born in Bergen County in 2013. Elodie is also the first baby for John and Lisa Sadowski, who live in Maywood. Elodie was delivered by Dr. Anna Collado, who is based in Hackensack. Lisa was in labor for 10 hours before Elodie was born. Both mother and daughter are doing well and the proud parents are ecstatic that their daughter is the area's first baby born in 2013.

John was admitted with a heart attack and would not be able to make it to their wedding in North Bergen today. The Organ Transplant Team at Hackensack University Medical Center and the NJ Sharing Network kicked off Donate Life Month, which is held in the month of April. Ihor Sawczuk, M.D., president, Hackensack University Medical Center hosted a ceremonial flag raising to commemorate organ transplantation. The Donate Life flag will remain raised in the front of the medical center for the month of April. Currently, there are 117,000 people on the national organ transplant waiting list. According to Martin Karpeh, M.D., chair of the Department of Surgery, it is easier than ever to become a living donor. Throughout Donate Life Month, Hackensack University Medical Center will glow blue and green in the main lobby to signifying the medical center’s commitment to educating and informing team members, patients and families about organ donation.

A New Jersey community is coming together, on a mission to help a young girl fighting cancer. In January, 11-year-old Briana Lopez learned she had acute myeloid leukemia. Now, her family is leading the charge for a bone marrow drive. For nearly two months, the Fort Lee sixth grader has been at the Institute for Pediatric Cancer & Blood Disorders at HackensackUMC, battling an aggressive, rare form of leukemia. Chemotherapy by itself won't cure Briana, who desperately needs a bone marrow transplant in the next six weeks, says her doctor, Alfred Gillio M.D.
